I'm still in disbelief that she talked me into it. When a woman gets a bee in her bonnet....................
I'm hoping that the picture goes through, I'm not good at this stuff.

LOL!
How embarrassing, the wording to me was saying that. And when you said "I hope the picture goes through - I'm not good at this stuff", I thought you meant "I hope you understand what I mean".
Anyway, Congrats. What did the missus decide on getting?

It's a brand new Grand Carnival, gold in colour. I did attach a pic but it seems to have disappeared into the www.
Ken, I just planted the idea & let "Hurricane Maria" go. She did the rest.:D

A Kia, Mate I am soooo sorry for you......

Sigh, here we go again. Please tell me why, but before you do, you should know that this our 3rd Kia, the 4th in our Family amongst 3 Hyundais & a Daewoo. ALL have been very good cars, well put together & economical. Most of all, they've been RELIABLE.
This model Carnival (SWB & Grand) is a completely new car from the ground up, sharing virtually nothing with the earlier Carnivals, especially not the Rover-based KV6 engine. In any case, longevity aside - which I can't comment on as we "only" had it 2 & 1/2 years - our '05 Carnival was amongst the best cars we've owned, if not the best. The fit & finish, inside & out, was easily comparable to local or Jap cars, it went well (5-speed manual), was as comfortable as & very economical - 29 mpg highway. Not bad for a 1.9 tonne 7-seater.
I'll freely admit that the earlier Carnivals had severe problems - a 50% engine-failure-rate is NOT good - but by the '04/'05 model they'd pretty much worked out all the bugs.
Something to remember is that Rover had exactly the same problems with the KV6 that weren't solved until the Gen.II engine. That didn't stop them selling the original faulty design to KIA.
To the new car, which has been here since early '06. The mechanicals are basically Mitsubishi 380 - the 3.8 184kw V6/5-speed auto - made by Hyundai which now owns KIA. It drives like a dream, goes at least as well as the average Commode or Falc. & has heaps of space & comfort for 8 adults. Cost? About $5000-00 more than an entry-level Commode.
Couple of bugs: a too-small fuel-filter; a batch of faulty fuel-pumps & a tendency to pull left if not carefully aligned. That's it. No leaking fuel-lines like a certain local car-maker that IMPORTS it's 7-seat People-mover. From where? Oh, that's right, Korea.
I'd LOVE to buy a locally-made People-mover (with ADULT-rated seats & space in Row 3) but the fact is that there just is not one made, especially one priced within reach of the average Family. Like real Four-Wheel-Drives (NOT "Soft-Road" All-Wheel-Drives), Australia's car-makers have missed the boat here too.

OK, you got me.:o I over-reacted. We got so many comments like that about our 1st Carnival that maybe I'm a little defensive. Everything I said though, stands. Wifey & I love those cars. Mind you, I do love my ol' Patrol a bit better, it's a whole lot simpler.:)

Well, you got your self (well your missus' did) a nice set of wheels.
So what if its a Kia. Its probably better than the __ we get on our own shores. Not to mention price!
At least she didn't decide on getting the Cheapest Brand New Car in the World by TATA Motors (India). The Tata Nano I think it is.

Yep It's the Tata Nano.......environmentalists say it shouldn't be produced, because to many will be sold, causing more global warming.......... I'd never get in that thing.......it would crumple like paper

Which is unfair.
Better than riding a scooter with four kids a top.
Could drive up the oil cost.
But cheap to run.

OK, so in size & design intent, what's the diff. between that Tata & say, the original Mini, or today, that Mercedes "Smart" thing?:D Or maybe the old Honda "Zot", eh Ken?;)

Original Mini used stronger bodywork, just like the Smart does.
I'd imagine, that Tata would be fairly plasticky, and thin metal for the price it is.
(approx $3,000).
I personally wouldn't get in anything smaller than a Yarris, Jazz, Getz
That Tata looks similar to the Daewoo Matiz......another not so strong car either

I said size & design intent, not construction. I thought most of the body panels on the Smart were plastic, anyway. The old Minis weren't that strong. I've owned 3 & 1 of them had the habit of cracking the floorpan in the middle, level with the back of the front seats, about the centre point of the vehicle. Needed welding & plating.
I agree about micro-cars though. I had a good drive of a Getz a couple of years ago & would quite happily own one. I went with a Kia Rio though, mainly because it had 4 doors against 2 & my Brother had already had one & liked it.

Ah sorry, didn't read your post properly.
The Smart uses a thing called the "tridion safety cell"....which is pretty strong...panels may be plastic and metal.....but if your in a big crunch, the Smarts stronger shell would be a lot more superior to the TATA's.......but then again........the smarts are pretty expensive too.
My Uncle had a Mini.......never had a problem with it.....when he sold it in the '90's it even had the plastic wrapping on the doors, that was put on there in the factory to protect in during transit.
he was the only owner....his wife died, so thats why he sold it, as she drove it
I like small cars for the city......but I'd rather a bigger car on the motorways

Agree, but that's the choice I have now: hmmmm, do I take the 2-tonne 8-seat Carnival, or the 2.5-tonne 7-seat Patrol? Environment? What environment? Turn up the a/c!:D

I love that A/C ad. - half or full. My spoilt kids complain that the Patrol's a/c doesn't get to the second row, let alone row 3!:D
That's what you get for having cars 18 years apart in technology.:p
Been thinking about a 308 for the Patrol, though.
