Channel Ten secure F1 rights in Australia!

No more channel nine [20/12/02 - 00:01]

We believe that the Channel Ten network will be taking over the broadcasting of Formula One events from the 2003 season, replacing the heavily criticised Nine Network, that angered fans over their constant delays during the past few years.

This will come as great news to most Aussie fans, however the Home of Motorsport, as they are most commonly referred to, will be in a similar boat to their predecessor as far as time slots go and will not be able to show the European events live. Fans also want live coverage of the qualifying sessions, however it appears as if this is also out of the question. Despite this, the network runs RPM on a Sunday afternoon and it is expected that this will be heavily supportive of the series, with all the latest happenings in the world of F1 including qualifying highlights

However, while many feel that their late night news and following sports program, Sports Tonight, that are normally hosted from 10:30 to 11:30 pm on a Sunday night, will be aired prior to a GP event, strong speculation indicates that this will not be the case. Another plus is that hopefully they won't deliberately run lengthy movies beforehand as Nine used to do, so that most races should begin at roughly 10:30 pm, a delay of thirty minutes..

As the network covers most Motorsports series', there are bound to be clashes throughout the year, and at this stage we can envisage at least two, the Malaysian and Japanese Grand Prix. Malaysia clashes with the V8 Supercar Clipsal 500 in March, while Japan is on the exact same weekend as the Bathurst endurance race. Due to the popularity of the V8 series in the country and the networks existing commitments in this regard, these two clashing Formula One events will more than likely be extensively delayed.

However, if you are an Aussie, don't despair, as there is still hope for live coverage on the Fox network. The Pay TV company is still in negotiations with the FOM and expect to have an announcement on the outcome in the coming weeks. If negotiations are successful, we could see a similar set-up to that of the MotoGP series, live on Fox, replayed on Ten. We will bring you more news on this development as it happens.
