When it comes to computers, I don't have much of a clue. I have come across this problem.

I'm running Outlook Express 6 for my emails. For some reason when I click on O/Expr. 6 to check my emails it keeps on saying "your POP3 server has not responded in 60 secs.....".

I also get these error detals show up -

A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC19
A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com (1)', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC15
A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server. Account: 'mail.bigpond.com (2)', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC15

Is this a big problem or can someone "in the know" guide me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance. :)

I'll do a quick basic step by step to see if all is okay in the settings, which it looks to be, & I dont see it as a big problem.

Open Outlook express. "just close the errors when they pop up."

Then up the top left you will see TOOLS "Click it" then ACCOUNTS "Click it" which will open a box.

Highlight your ISP if its there, if its not then we know the problem ;)
It should read/look like this "'mail.bigpond.com(default)"
Then click "Properties" which will open another box.

Then you should see some tabs up the top of the box, click the one called servers.

Now this should have you ISP next to POP3 & SMTP.

So it should look like this.

Incoming mail (POP3): mail.bigpond.com

Outgoing mail (SMTP): mail.bigpond.com

And also make sure you have your username & password correct.

Hope that helps

Mike

Assuming Bigpond is your ISP, here is a link to some basic instructions on the Bogpond website which may add to what Mike has said!

Bogpond email help (https://bigpond.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bigpond.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10 484&p_sid=1J46F9cj&p_lva=10264&p_page=1&display=content)

If this all looks ok, the only other thing I could suggest is to see if you can actually get to the email server. Do this by left clicking "Start" then left click "Run" type in cmd next to "open:" then press Enter, which will open up a dos window, within this window type the following:

ping mail.bigpond.com

You should get multiple responses back stating the return trip time, if you get multiple timeouts, you have a comm's problem and probably need to speak with Bogpond directly!! Once completed, left click the "X" in the top right corner of the dos window.

Thanks for your help Road Runner 72 & HRT 1-2. I checked everything and all was fine. The problem ended up being that the computer's security "Trend Micro" was blocking Outlook Express causing it not to function properly. :)

I dont exactly have a problem with my computer but need some computer related help. I am using a PDF document off the net for a geography project. Has lots of info and diagrams but CANT copy any of the diagram to paste into word? Can you copy and paste diagrams or images from a PDF?
Thanks

Chris, I'm not sure about your question, but I know a long way around it. First, you press the "Print Screen" key, then go into paint and press paste which gives you a picture of it. Then you edit the picture of the screen to only include the diagram and then save it. Last of all, you insert the diagram into word. Well, if nothing else works, you could use this method.

You can copy and paste from a PDF, from memory you had to use the select tools though, you don't just right click like in most cases, although that may have changed now.

Hi everyone.
A couple of weeks ago, my computer stuffed up and it is now being fixed. I connected another old computer up to the internet which used to be my aunties but is now mine. Now, I've just realised that since its been connected, we've been recieving all my aunties email and none of the ones that I need, some being very important. Now, I'm not sure if this is simple or not, but how do you change an email adress on a computer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this fairly important.
Cheers,
Thomas
P.S, sorry about bringing up an old thread.

I might give them a call tomorrow and see if they can do anything. Or, I might have to install Bigpond Broadband on this computer. Yep very easy to fix, you just need to add your username & password & then setup the pop3 mail accounts.

Also you didnt grab your aunt's modem by chance? LOL then you will be using her ISP so go crazy downloading.

In Outlook Express:

Left click Tools
Left click accounts
Left click add
left click mail...
Enter the name you wish to appear on your email, then left click next
Enter your email address, left click next
Left click the drop down for the server & select POP3
Type in the following for both the incoming & outgoing server: mail.bigpond.com then left click next (that server should be correct)
Enter your account details i.e. udername (email address & password if you know them) then left click next
Left click finishIf you want to remove your aunties email details, at step 2 above, left click her account and left click remove then confirm.

Should work!!

Hi guys. Ive got an Acer PC with one of those compact disc drives that accepts discs like a car cd player. Now i bought a MP3 player that requires you to put a programme on your computer. The prob is the mp3 programme is on a miniture cd. How can I put it on my pc as the disc drive wont accept it as its too small? If anyone can help it would be very muchly appreciated.

HRT 1-2

It is an 8cm CD which most current drives will support. Have you tried to run it or assumed it wont? Normally the disc tray will have the 8cm recess in it to allow it to be read! A suggestion would be to either download a copy of the software or get it burnt onto a normal size CD.

If you do find that you need the software/drivers on the CD just go to the company's website and download the software/drivers. Otherwise I am sure that once you have it connected to the PC you will see it available in explorer and be able to drag and drop as suggested, unless it uses a hidden file system???

Holdennumber1 - you ened to modify the pop3 accounts for your account. If you are with bigpond go to their website and find the settings required so that you can receive your emails, as it sounds like your aunty's settings are still set.

I don't know whats wrong but if you want to reload Windows hold down the DELETE key (may be another key its different depending on your PC) at startup. It should say what key you need to presss to enter the BIOS. Then you can change it so your PC boots from the CD Drive rather than the harddrive and it will run the Windows CD rather than the Windows on your hardrive. Then you can repair/reinstall.

firemansam
12-12-2008, 01:59 PM
OK on the blue screen you should see a list, Standard CMOS features, Advanced BIOS features and the list goes on. In Advanced BIOS features it list the boot order which will be floppy 1st. You just change that to your CD drive then when it boots it will run the CD instead of searching the floppy then hard drive.

There may be an easier way to do it but that's how I've always done it.

Hi guys.
This isn't in any way a big problem, but, quite recently I was temporarily banned and ever since, I cannot view any of the popular smilies. They are just displayed as a cross and then the code after them.
And even stranger, I can see every smilie when you click into "more" and choose one for the long list.
Anyway, its no big drama, its just a nuisense as I sometimes can't tell whether people are being serious or not and I don't want to mistake anything and get into an argument.
Any help would be really appreciated!

Also, when I go to post something, the bit where you type the text into looks really small because of this problem and I can't tell when there's another paragraph. Anyway, at least I can still post smilies, even if i cant see them.
And BTW, I've probably got into my fair share of arguments already.;):D

I'm not 100% sure if this will work but it can't hurt to give it a try. Click the START menu and click RUN. Type DXDIAG then click OK. A window will pop up. Click the DISPLAY tab at the top of the window then it should say DEVICE and under that, the name.

Again this may not work as it may not be able to detect the card without drivers or DirectX to begin with. It may just end up saying that its a generic graphics device until you install its drivers. If that doesn't work you could open up the PC and actually look at the card and what is written on it. Let us know how you go.

Hey.. Ive got a strange problem with my new HP pc. Any help is appreciated..

Just recently i bought Battlefield2-The complete collection(which includes BF2 special forces, BF2 euro forces and BF2 armoured fury. All this on one disk.) Anyway, as always i didnt read the manual and put the disk in the drive and installed it. During install it asked me for a cd key no. which i entered in.. After install had completed i realised it had only installed BF2 and not any of the others. Oh well i'll give the game a go anyway. Excellent game, played well.

So now i thought id try and install the other parts. I went to my computer and opened to explore the BF2 disk. I found the other files to install and started with the special forces pack first. Got this going and asked me for another cd key no. Turns out there are 3 cd key no's, one for each pack. I put the corresponding cd key no in and it was all good.
It seemed to install properly but when i went to open the game it didnt do anything. Bugger, oh well best thing to do is uninstall everything and start over.

I thought id read the manual and i found out that all packs should basically install in one go, which i didnt do. I was supposed to hit auto run after the first pack installed(because of a restart) and the rest will install.

So ive now uninstalled the BF2's and went to put the disk back in to re-install but it wont read the disk. I put another disk in (audio cd) and it wont read that either.

Does anyone know what could be the problem. Ive only had this pc for 2 weeks. Could it be a co-incidence that the drive just crapped it self or could i have done something to it.. :o

Cheers..

Alright go into the start menu click on all programs go down the list to maintenance click on it and then click on backup restore. When that comes up you will see 2 tasks on the left click on repiar windows using system restore. Just follow the process by finding a restore point/date before you loaded the game and keep going with the process. After that is all done try to install game again the right way this time.

If you have problems with old games you can run it in compatibility mode. Goto the exe file you run the game with, right click with mouse and goto properties. Then in the box that opens the 3rd tab is compatibility. You can change the compatibility to win95, win98 etc. Also a few options with the colors. I dont know if this will work just something to try.

I just did a google on transport Tycoon and found some info. Check this site out. http://www.transporttycoon.net/index
On the left index under downloads click the game there are different versions of the game. There is only 1 version for windows and to run on winxp it says you need a patch which is at http://www.ttdpatch.net/ On the first page it has the link to the patch. just click the one with the windows sign. Below there are also updated graphics. It downloads as a zip file, unzip it and have a read through the readme and it says how to install.
You just need to download the patch but if it doesnt work you could try downloading the game again. Hope this works for you.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Windows version)
Size: 14.84MB
The Windows version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Requires TTDPatch to run on Windows NT, 2000 or XP! TTDPatch 2.0 beta 9 is bundled, please read the Readme.txt file before use.

and

Transport Tycoon (DOS version)
Size: 1.58MB
The original DOS version of "Transport Tycoon". Will not run on Windows NT, 2000, XP or later. Users' experiences on Windows 9x may vary depending on sound and video hardware.

If you want the original version you might need to get another hard drive or pc with an earlier version of windows.

Do you remember what version of windows you had it on, you might have to go back to 3.11, windows 95 or windows 98 in dos mode. You could get an old pc to run it on if you could get a copy.
