Last ever historic meeting at OP this weekend.
It's getting closer to the end. Sigh.
Anyone else coming along? I think I'll be there on Sunday - family wedding on Saturday and I don't want to die (wife's neice).

Any old or past drivers attending?

There's an entry list at www.HSRCA.org.au
But it's really just an ordinary race meeting. Historics are about the cars.

I'll be there on Saturday, a friends workmate is running a car so i'll be milling round the pits for abit of the day
A pity they aren't running the 'proper' Oran Park layout ;)
Pug205

So they are running on the small circuit are they? Pity but I guess that means less walking for the day.
Inter - Im plan to shot from all around the track, the last corner/wall and around the back being the main parts (the places you can never get to easily on a busy V8 supercar weekend basically)
It's on the GP circuit, according to HSRCA.
I think the implication was that the short circuit is the 'proper' one, as that's closest to the original layout.
Although if you look very carefully, you can still see where the track used to run. It turned left just after the Dogleg and met up with the current straight about 1/3 of the way along.
There's a State meeting in December (Nov 30 - Dec 1) that's possibly going to be the last ever. I'll be going out there with some earthmoving tools to get a couple of souvenirs - like a piece of the wall Dad hit.

It was 20 years and more ago now but used to love trekking out to Oran as well as Amaroo with my camera gear. These photos are superb Pug and Moxo, makes me very sad that this place is going. It is too iconic to be bulldozed, it makes me wish I was a billionaire, I would buy it and preserve it.

Have had the same thought many times as well Mick. Maybe we can all chip in! It is the first track I ever went too and hate the thought of it being pulled down. Even going to what was once Amaroo is upsetting and I never even got to go to a race meeting there.
Have been taking some pictures of OP and its facilties in my last visits to keep as a reminder after she is gone. There is a sadness to see how run down and rusty so many parts of it are but that has its good points too as it makes it easier to remember how it was when it was all new. The place still has its character thats for sure.

I have'nt been to Amaroo since the early 90s. What a fantastic track it was.... I might have to do one more Oran Park meet... I did the figure 8 earlier in the year, might be time to revisit the GP version one more time :( ;)

December is the last meeting there AmonFan so there is a little bit of time still.
We were discussing the other day about the uproar that would rightly happen if something like the SCG was being turned into housing estates and yet places like Oran Park, Amaroo, Surfers Paradise, etc all seem to be taken away so easily. They have the same historic value but being motor sport they are just not given the same treatment as other sports in this country.
Here is my first attempt at a panoramic shot taken last Saturday. It is rough and I seemed to have missed part of the track somewhere but you get the idea :o

Thanks for the welcome and flattery David5. Sad to it's going (or gone already for my involvement) I just wish I'd fitted the new rubber to have a chance of going out with a win on my last attempt there. The rubber we used was a 15 months old. I had fun though. I don't ever remember seeing that many photographers around the track during a race. I must say I poured over the pics you guys have posted in other threads on this forum for hours and have admired the quality of the pics, simply brilliant a they are again here.

Good stuff Moxo, the Moxon Vee... You going to give us a bit of history about it....
Sure. My Dad (John Moxon) built it in 1969 / 70 and raced it briefly, before a testing crash at Oran Park left him with a severed spine.
Lots more info here (although the magazine's sub buggered it up a bit in the intro - I had nothing to do with finding or restoring the car).

In the old days, people used to make racing cars out of whatever they had lying around. So you had lightened MGs, 'Specials' which had running gear out of a road car and a fabricated chassis / body and whatnot. Great days.

K1w1taxi, what is this D1 http://www.floridacarclub.com/forum/images/smilies/ character0109.gif, that is called powersliding. And done properly.
Well you see the young uns think they have invented a new form of racing, one where you go sideways round corners - seems they never heard of Improved Production :D or names like Jane, Beechey, Big Pete :D
Cheers

But wait...
Two more Vees. A Nota and an Elfin

Mine (#27) is actually a Stag rather than an Elfin. Shame I won't be racing at OP again.

D'oh. OK, an Elfin copy. That better?
Or were they? I'm confused now. There were several copies of the Mk1 Elfin, weren't there? Good cars, either way.
Yeah shame it's closing.
Although, there's three more race meetings. Day/night on August 1, the Shannons Nationals and the Nov 30 / Dec 1 last ever (we think).

Yeah, pretty much an Elfin copy. Wouldn't think you'd get away with it these days.

Were you there when Dad was telling about the Rennmaxes often being Brabham-copies?
He was at Bob Britton's (designed and built the Rennmax cars) workshop when Jack Brabham came in (must have been Tasman time) and there was a chassis on the jig. Everyone was trying to stand in front of it or distract Jack away from it!

No, I missed that. There's some great stories from those times.
Moxo, where were you standing?
we probably ran into each other not knowing who we are?
Sorry, Inter. I missed this.
I was at BP / Energol, whatever it's called - Energol at historic meetings....
Then I was in the pits, being a perve, then back to the last corner to get some more shots.
Fat bloke, taupe moleskin shirt, goatee.
I'll be at the last OP day/night meeting on August 1, as well. Lots of lasts.

Got to fidget with this car too, back in the day. This was Damon Beck's second Mk11 Rennmax, which was originally green and black. I used to help Damon - he very kindly allowed my to help and thereby gain some knowledge of motor racing and mechanical experience. I was a restless 15 year old in 1977, probably headed for trouble. From that tiny acorn of overtightening bolts on Vees and dropping the driver's brand new helmet, came this 'career' in motor sport!
Damon's very ill these days and I don't think it will end well, which is massively sad. He was one of the very best Formula Vee drivers from the sixties, right up to the 80s.
Thanks Damon.
