View Full Version : Driver Team or Manufacturer?
After the discussion thats been going on in motorsport circles after 888's decision to move to Holden, I thought it'd be interesting to see where everyone's allegiances lie.

I used to support a driver and have been a huge Skaife fan ever since around 2000. But now that he's gone, I don't have a driver to support so I just hope that a Holden wins and in particular, HRT and GRM.:)Cheers,
Thomas
P.S Just for the record, I will in no way support Lowndes and Whincup in a Holden. I don't like either of them personality wise.

Sorry to hear that your not a Lowndes Fan - He's the closest to Brocky that we'll have!

Sorry to hear that your not a Lowndes Fan - He's the closest to Brocky that we'll have! I still find it hard to understand how Lowndes is like Brocky. I find him to be fake but thats just my opinion.
And talent wise, well lowndes is/was a good driver but not as good as Skaife or Brocky in terms of success.

well growing up i always loved Brocky, and those HRT cars in the early days were tough, but after he retired i followed Lowndes's career and still do today (never liked Whincup and still don't)
my first car was a Rotary, so when it comes to supporting a manufacturer..... i simply dont cause there is too many changes to teams etc
Although i now currently drive a Ford (and a Daihatsu handivan:p), i have lost all respect for the blue oval when it comes to V8SC racing.
so yes..... i am jumping ship in 2010

Driver for me which is Brocky....
I don't really have a "favourite" current driver anymore....so maybe I support the manufacturer a bit these days (Holden)

well i voted for manufacturer,
Although was a Brock fan and followed him through Holden,Sierra's and BMW,since Brock's passing been more HRT/Holden.
As for Lowndes welcome back(just stop whinging)
same goes for Whincup.
I don't think it is right for the sport but time will tell!!!!

Actually i support DJR as a team and Johnson as a driver and have done since i was 4. If junior goes elsewhere or they switch to holden it'd be heartbreaking to quite alot of fans being the longest serving team in the comp.

Oh c'mon we all know that you're a T888 fan in the closet well know you can say it openly next year:p No way mate! Why support a team that I've chuckled at when one of their cars gets put in the wall or one that brings me 3 very bad memories when I've stood up out of my seat and watched them go over the line first after 161 laps at Bathurst.:(
I'd rather support SBR or DJR instead of 888 in a couple of Commodores.

For me its a bit of 2, I like certain drivers and Holden cars. I had a real problem with some drivers moving between manufactures but continued to take an interest in the drivers that moved.
I suppose for me when Brock left Holden and raced the other makes and different cars in different series it really pointed out that i followed him not Holden. I have done the same with Whincup and Lowndes when they made there move also a lesser extent the swapping Ingall has done.
At the end of the day aslong as we have good racing it really doesnt matter how many of which car, just aslong as the sport keeps going.

29-07-2009, 06:17 PM
mmmmm I voted manufacturer but i dont know!!
always followed Brock so it was Holden then when he went to the others i stayed with him and didnt like HRT. Then when he went back to HRT followed him and Lowndes then Skaife.
When lowndes went i still liked him but couldnt wear Ford gear so stayed with HRT/Skaife.
Now that MS is gone i still follow HRT but dont buy there (or any other) gear as i dont "worship" GT or WD like the other 3.
Now that CL is coming back, Ill follow him again, meaning I'll be buying his merchandise.
Must admit i have lost alot of interest in this series over recent years and its not just because Ford are winning Bathurst etc.

I have always supported the manufacturer, Holden, but always had a soft spot for the driver. When Brock drove Ford, I still, quietly, supported Brock, but never let my friends know. Secretly I have supported Lowndes at Ford and was never upset when he won, but at the end of the day it was always Holden for me.

I like it.:D
Personally i go for DJR first and then the other drivers i like regardless of brand. Enforcer is one, Holdsworth, Davo ,CL, Coultard and Brighty. I dont care what car they drive nor what DJR are driving. It makes it easier not to have a coronary when stuff like this happens.:D

I'm a DJR supporter first and a Ford supporter second, I would support DJR no matter what car they race.
I voted manufacturer, I've always been a Ford fan, it stems back to way before the current V8 Supercar series.
Some say that you get a sore neck from looking backwards, but it's the past legends and the past legendary performances by Ford Racing vehicles across the world that puts the fire in my belly.
Having grown up with the marque, while having due respect for other legends from other makers is just something that I'll never walk away from, and I smile every time that I think about those treasured memories.
Sadly things have just taken another turn for the worst regarding Ford and racing in this series, but hopefully, before cars turn fully retarded and the world implodes, we'll get to see another Ford shine in the sun again.
Good luck 888, Craig and Jamie, thanks for the memories that you added for me.

Ford as a manufacturer, then SBR and as far as drivers go they are just puppets with hands in the wrong spot IMO.

Im a ford fan but ill still like T888 Lowndes and Whincup.theve given us (ford fans)something to cheer about and left us with some great memories.I wont be selling any of my models or memrobilia and they have my best wishes. After all it was a business decision.Im a little dissapointed but heartbroken?hell no.The sun will still shine the racing will go on and ford have a great line up,and who knows, what comes around goes around.

I support Holden first and foremost..
As far as drivers supported Brocky, Larry Perkins and I'm also huge Skaife and Murphy fan..
The only driver I support now is Murph although I dont mind the kelly boys ( but thats mainly because of the Perkins conection)..
Supported Lowdnes when he drove for Holden, didn't when he drove for Ford will support him again next year I think he's a great bloke and a good driver he spoilt it by driving for enermy..
If anyone wants to sell some of lowdnes ford models cheap my mate will buy them he's a huge CL fan..

I'll support that ... I might as well add my 2c seeing every man and his dog is tapping away at their keyboards sending Aussie motorsport forums into meltdown ... For me as a fan I support the driver and couldn't give a toss about the team or the brand ... Have always supported Lowndesy so am happy to now add another Lowndes commodore ( loose term - should be a sports sedan with a Holden window banner ) to the collection ! ... The hysteria being whipped up driven obviously by passion is great to see but at the end of the day - its a business folks and Roland Dane is one of the smartest operators out there ! ... In my mind Ford as a corporation are the ones that have been caught napping and the other teams in the championship should pull their socks up and get some wins on the board and maybe deals like this would be afforded to them ... As for people saying Lowndes is a traitor - what a crock of dog doo !! .....
The driver is a but a small part of the entire factory.
I support factory backed teams. The rest are just privateers.

Here here.... Oh the outrage when Bob Morris the then current Touring Car Champion switched to a Ford for Bathurst..... Or when Moff jumped in RH's 2nd A9X or in the Harves Commie for Sandown 1980 while his Falcon was being built although he did'nt tell Brock that :p
Or worse, 2 different brands being sponsored by the same company.... Cullen Torana, Dickson Falcon.... There have been more.......

My biggest worry is not the T888 defection but i hope it is not the start of a trend of just total holden domination.I know some people would like to see that but most wont.I have a bad feeling this is just the beginning.Hope im wrong.
I am a Ford man. I am a major fan of Dick Johnson but I could never wish them a win in a Holden. I have always been a SBR fan and it does not matter who steers there cars. I like Lowndes and Whincup but I will never wish them a win in a Holden. I will not be wearing there merchandise from next year.I will just add them to the tons of past years memories cupboard.

I'm a driver supporter. Shane van Gisbergen, Lowndes and Murph are probobly my top drivers in the current V8's.
Seems a bit silly to me that people would sooner worship a plastic badge than a person :laugh2: Although I do prefer Ford to Holden, I just don't 'worship' it.

I followed Brocky from 1972 & will he will be my driver forever now since his passing I only follow GRM & hope that Holden keeps winning.
As for T888 coming over - don't agree with it & I won't be following them.
My biggest concern is now that T888 have been handed a massive amount to switch what happens to the other smaller team's funding from Holden? I don't see how thay can keep up the current financial level to those teams which means a number of them may fold.
Add the above to proposed Car of the Future concept & I think that the series may have just shot itself in the foot - I can only hope this is not the case!

Am a proud DJR Team Mate also
Just hope they dont change & Ford come to there senses & back this team.
Pity they didnt keep Will Davison, not sure on Courtney, too many bent panels.
But a win is a win.

Since the 60s until now, I have followed Moffat, Brocky, Dicky, Skaifey and Lowndesy.
At least when Lowndesy retires I can stop collecting Race cars and save some money.

I support Holden, HRT mainly and who ever drives for them at the time, as I supported HDT. But when brocky drove for BMW and Ford it was him I supported, not HRT. So mixed bag really

I have only been interested in V8's probably since about 05 but in that time i have followed holden but mainly HRT.
During 06, 07 i also followed the toll hsv dealer team as i am a GT fan and once he had gone to HRT i mainly followed him there supporting him and Skaife as they are my two favorite drivers. Once Skaife left and Davison come into HRT, i have now become a fan of his.
I also like to follow a bit of Bright, Van Gisbergan and S. Johnson

I've never really understood the whole on eyed Holden/Ford mentality. Same with other sports like football. My family has always been more Holden biased but it hasn't been to the point of hating Ford.
Me personally, I like good racing and don't care about the brand of cars. I can't really pick a team or driver in V8's because in one way or another I've dealt with them all and that would cloud my view point. In F1 I've never cared if Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, or Brawn win. I watch it for the competition. I must admit I didn't like Schumacher because of some of his dodgy driving tactics but I always respected his talent and achievements.
I remember stopping to fill the car up on the way to work and from out of nowhere when I walked into the shop this total stranger called me a cross dresser. I checked my shoes straight away (it was 6am) and after a second I realised he had seen me get out of my XR6 wearing a HRT jacket. I laughed it off as 'It's a company car' but it hadn't actually occured to me that some people would find it strange.
I like the fact that some people can be so passionate and support one team/driver/brand with all their hearts. Sometimes I wish I could be that into something. I do see that it can cut out so many other things that I'm happy that I can appreciate the whole sport in general.

I am in a bit of a quandry on this question,
I voted for manufacturer,
BUT,
There are drivers I like/d to follow... (Brock, Skaife, Perkins, Johnson, Grice, Moffat) to name a few,
And there are teams I like to follow, HRT, GRM, BJR, RNR....
But I turn up at a race track wearing my HRT shirt, quietly hoping that one of the two wins....
I will be a cross dresser next year driving my FPV GT and wearing a Team Vodafone shirt emblazoned with HOLDEN on it...
Manufacturer - Ford.
