I am going to the Island V8's for the first time this year. I take it I should pack for all seasons especially cold and windy down there? I was hoping to go to Motogp this year but the guy I was going with pulled out, will have to wait till next year for that now. I'm looking forward to the Aus Superbikes running with the V8's this year, should be a good weekend. :)

this is very interesting according to sportsbet car 51 skaife and murphy are 4th favourites to win ahead of car 17, 7 and 33 im suprised the favs are car 888 than, 2 and 6. very interesting i dont think that murph and skaife will have a strong car hopefully they can prove me wrong.

Be worthwhile to scatter some cash over some of the mid fielders (as far as the odds go) particularly if there is any chance of rain.
They are stupid odds for car #51. Anyone thinking of backing it, wait till Sunday morning and you will 20's

theres a front crossing the state this afternoon and tonight that might pop up a few thunderstorms in coastal areas and or inland central vic be mostly around the ranges though so should be alright down the island alot of whats being seen on the radar atm is interferance with the high winds though it is showing up as high level cloud
not unusal the new doppler radar is still learning victorias weather patterns and thus these sorts of blemishes will keep popping up
i at this stage after watching the system develop will be suprised if we see anything from it till after 6 tonight down the island anyway

Hope he doesn't get one. Partially because I wanna see the Gis get a result, but mostly because it'll just highlight how farcical the category is. Tander didn't lose any time on the track, and even rounded up Alex on the outlap (I think Alex let him through).

Much prefer the panning shot Mike. Colours are great, looks to be damn crisp focus and love the background blur. Also got a lot of character in the car with what looks to be full power down with the bum squating down and a bit of lift on the nose. Add to that the dropping away road, yet you have the car framed square in the shot. The only bad point to the pic is that bloody blue sign on the wall that keeps drawing the eye:(

Had a thought mid-race. Wonder if they'll investigate the tyres. There were a number of blow-outs all day, plus Lowndesies tyre. Hmmm.
Few really good showings. Was hugely impressed with Besnard. Slades 60 lap stint was good too. Also impressed with John McIntyre, since he's hardly raced a Supercar (Bathurst 02, 04, Sandown 08 and a couple of Fujitsu showings from memory), and outshone his Fujitsu teammate.

Didn't crompo say something about there's a chance you can damage tyres coming back onto the track over the ripple strip when lowndes ran wide when he was behind tander.. He sure did. Crompton said it cuts the inside tyre wall when you go back on over the ripple strip.
So what tyre let go then? If it were any of the right hand side tyres, it definately could have been that.

I thought Skaifey's job was a 10/10.... a little bit harsh from Baretta and Larkham 9.5 and 9 out of 10.
For not driving for the last 9/10 months, he certainly still has it, and I even think he out drove Murph.....If only 'Uncle Tom' had not intervened........

Skaifey did a top job today and probably outdid murph. Slade was good for 1st half of stint, then as per usual went walkabout for the 2nd half with times 1 to 2 1/2 seconds slower than the leaders-Russell must have been p****ed

That finish blew my mind. which ever gods HRT worchip clearly live at Phillip Island.:D
I think what todays race showed, even more so than the last couple of years, is that there are waaaay too many part time drivers that are better than some of their full time counterparts.
Besnard and Luff are the first two that come to mind. I talked to Luffy at QLD raceway and he said besides the practice sessions he hasn't raced a thing all year (not even a go kart)!
Besnards times were as good as the front runners during his stint. Shows that its not what you know but how much money you have (did somebody say Dumbrell? wasn't me).

That was seriously scary when McConville went off, crazy speed as he just skimmed straight over the top of the gravel trap. You gotta love Besnards comment about messing his jocks though. When Lowndes slowed I thought it was a fuel issue. I'm still not entirely convinced it was a tyre and I doubt we'll ever see the actual tyre either, it all seemed strange to me. It did seem that there were a fair few tyre issues though. Didn't they say during the broadcast that the tyres were a little different for the 500 and 1000 in the way that they were constructed? Might have something to do with it, you never know.
The other finish that had similar tragic outcomes was last year's F1 finale at Brazil.
Everyone thought Massa wrapped up the title, but he overtook Glock.
Today seemed like a repeat from Lowndes of that moment.
Perhaps PI is starting to become a heart breaker for Lowndes? eg 2006 grand finale, JW's off last year and today's result. Bad luck comes in 3's so he should be fine for the future?
But hey, some teams would dream to have T8's performance at the enduros!

Watching the broadcast today, McConville's crack at Owen was more than justified, owen's crack back (basically telling mcconville to get stuffed) shows he wont be racing anytime soon at BJR.
Stand outs of the day were Besnard, luff and baird. Throught they all drove extremely well.

After giving it a chance I've decided I don't like having the 500 at Phillip Island. I would much prefer the 500 to go back to Sandown and have sprint races held at The Island. I found myself wishing it would rain just to throw a bit of a spanner in the works. Also during the driver intros where was Bayliss? The other drivers around his entry seemed to shrug their sholders as if to say where the hell is he, as Fiore stood out there by himself. Did nature call or what?

I'm with A Moffat, who refused to ever run again at PI after barrel rolling the XA back in 1973. The joint is still bloody dangerous....Heaps of grass areas hiding ditches, drains, holes,
humps etc. Only a couple of 'Sand Traps' constructed with what appears to be Blue Metal or similar, so anything that enters at speed skims across the top like a dog on Lino....I bet they don't release the 'in car speed data' from McConville & the velocipede who nearly collected him but for a few thousandths of a second !! I recon the BJR car would probably have still been hitting 150 Kph+ as it slithered over the track bass ackwards, & the oncoming vehicle would've been doing at least the same speed so would have had a closing speed of 300+....Imagine the mess if the had collected each other !!! I'm with Garry Rogers too...More money should be spent on Grid Girls & Shiny Tyres, & less on Computers !!! :D Roll on the "Stoush on the Mount" it should be an interesting few days.....

Looking at the vision posted above, Cam needs to put his brain into gear before shooting off his mouth.
Steve Owen does not change direction at all. Check the front wheels. Cam is trying a highly optimistic move just where the track narrows going into 1. Not knowing what happened down the straight, I will not comment on the blocking as I have not seen a recording of it.
Must admit it was interesting watching him go through the gravel at unabated speed.
Bill, contact would have been about 220kph if the Valvoline car had got him. Would have been a nearly 90 degree hit.

my take on the w.e
as i said about the weather for saturday held out till about 5 30 so i was only about 1/2 hour off :D
as for sunday what a brilliant race very disheartening for most of it being a holden supporter but i was suprised cause as far as i could workout apart from a couple of seperate pit choices for 888 and 2 they didnt seem to get anymore than about 3 seconds apart the entire 113 laps
another good thing i found with yesterdays race as well was they never seemed to fall into a rythme for the race either there was always someone trying to pass someone else which in a long race like that can be quite rare
BIGGG BIGGGG thanks to grease (wayne) for getting us in yet again for the cost of nothimg more than fresh air :D and also getting myself and my mate onto the action side of pitlane :D
(havent had a good look at the pic yet but Rob might have a nice pitting action shot of your kitten car as i ran into the garage during race B yesterday on there pit)
now as PROMISED what happend with 888 on the final lap of yesterday we couldnt hear the radios or anything where we were near fuso corner and everyone was assuming it was fuel but as soon as garth passed on his victory lap we jumped in the car and flew across to the pits
got on pit lane and bee lined striaght to 888's garage
not sure exactly how it works but the cars have to be lined up on pit lane on a firm stop or something after the race has finished well every car was on the lane apart from 888 who as we arrived were just rattling off the last wheel they were promptly put straight onto a tyre hand trolley covered over and what looked like hidden into the transporter and if you ever saw a more guilty face you just had to look at any of the pit crew in there garage hmmmm
walking down pit lane seeing all the cars after a long race like that was brilliant never had that experience b4
all in all had a fantastic w.e caught up with a few of the guys on here which is always good and met another member for the first time to good to meet you jas
had some fun in pitlane got a few key signatures that i needed to chase up and spoke to will davo and one of his pr guys who after making a fone call shortly i might of lined up a lil something special for myself at next w.e's HRT open day :D

I am glad Holden won, but did they ever show the 888 tyre. This is only a thought but is it possible that team orders played a part here, 888 going red next year, Holden 40th year in motorsport. Lowndes wasn't impressed, normally he is all smiles even after an incident like that. Would love to hear people thoughts on the matter.

Yeah and it wasn't really Lee Harvey Oswald, and no plane hit the Pentagon on 9/11 - which was all a CIA plot anyway and if you keep wearing the tin foil hat the aliens won't be able to read your thoughts. ;)

Note Cam's comments about Owen having blocked down the inside all the time - yet still the regular thinks he can go down there. Yeah Right Cam.

Interesting? More like bloody scary. That sort of incident should see PI licence to hold V8SC level races revoked until they can seriously improve their safety standards.

Without making turn 1 at PI into a dangerous corner like turn 8 at Adelaide, I'm not sure what more they can do...
I think the outside of turn 1 caught cars better when it was freshly ploughed dirt than with the kitty litter that's there now.
Many cars have gone straight there before, but I can only recall one other spearing across the exit of Southern Loop.
Cameron McConville can do no wrong in his eyes. He has ALWAYS blamed everybody else for his mental lapses...car, drivers etc
Good work HRT, not the fastest car - but somehow managed to take it. Can't wait for Bathurst.
Cam was blocked on lap 15 (i think), you do not block down the inside of the front straight in lap 15/113. He was the faster car and Owen should respect that he has more experience, and in this case much more speed. The racing line is to the left, how can anyone say that wasn't blocking? On lap 15! What a joke!
Leigh

Likewise Cam should have enough experience to realise that he doesn't need to "force" his way through on lap 2...watching the footage posted above, not only does Steve keep the wheels straight, but Cam has at least a foot of tar down the inside of him...begs the question of why was there contact?
Racing line is the one that gets you around the corner, this is not necessarily the same for every driver...

In most forms of motorsport, the top finishing cars (1-2-3) have to go into a parc ferme situation after the race until released by the stewards and I would have thought it was illegal for T8 to change the tyres at that point ? Is this the case in the V8's ?
i thought the top 3 places had to be scrutinised by how the cars finished? Untouched? As mentioned above

RE Oven vs McConville, here is my take!
Was it avoidable - yes!
Is the track at fault - no!
Does the track need changing - no!
Do the drivers need to remember to respect the track - yes!
Was one driver solely at fault - no!
My opinion was that Steve O didn't need to be that aggressive considering that stage of the race however, knowing this, Cam didn't need to stick his nose in there either. IF Cam was so much faster then his long distance experience would of told him to bide his time as a pass would come. Considering the positioning of Steve's car Cam was rather naive placing his car in that vulnerable position as we all know that side of the track narrows as the corner approaches.
Now watching Steve O last year and this year he is driving a little too aggressive, however that is his prerogative and being one of those cusp drivers it's understandable as to why he's going to make life hard for the regulars, just ask Russell about Winton ;)
Sure some might that Steve is replacing the Dude as the latest dangerous driver, however the main guys need to remember that just because they're a regular it doesn't mean that everyone else is going to wave them through either....
I wait the sport news with baited breath of what Cam's latest opinion might be.

Great pics again mate. Seems that island weather really helps make some great photography with no harsh shadows or glare. The lighting is very even and brings out the detail of the cars nicely. The cars are sharp and focused, hope I can get my shots looking this good on the mountain in a few weeks time.
Are any of those cropped and what size lens you using btw?

I can't talk for Mike, but none of my photo's are cropped (& I'm 99% sure Mike's are not either), just rezised so that they don't take forever to load as most as 5mb+ ;)

Thanks Brchi, they look sharp enough not to be cropped. You guys did are a great job with all your shots this weekend.

all good pug, glad someone enjoys them, as I love taking them :D
lens wise for my shots I was using a mix of 70-200m, 300mm and both with and without a 1.4x converter at times

Interesting? More like bloody scary. That sort of incident should see PI licence to hold V8SC level races revoked until they can seriously improve their safety standards.

Lee, I was standing on the outside of 1 (inside the track) so to me, very interesting watching him go from right to left past me.
I think the outside of turn 1 caught cars better when it was freshly ploughed dirt than with the kitty litter that's there now.
Many cars have gone straight there before, but I can only recall one other spearing across the exit of Southern Loop.
Helps when the driver actually puts his foot on the brake. Otherwise at that speed the car will go through. Then you get the driver who at slower speeds jumps on the brakes when they should have hit the go pedal and got out under their own power.

The left front was adrift as soon as he hit Owen. How did he stop in his pit bay without brakes?

Hand brake, just like the Kitten car of Fiore/Bayless, before each sesion they had to chock the wheels so it did not roll, why, was there a hand brake? How many of the cars have hand brakes?

Hand brake ;) there was no sign of brake lights.
So why didn't he use that when he was a spinnin?
I just can't seem to get 1+1 to equal 2 here!

I have seen many race cars over the years come into the pits/paddock area without brakes and pull into garage/marquee area ;)... I think they call it experience ;)
Leigh
15-09-2009, 08:04 AM
So was this "experience" a little lacking when he pulled into the gravel trap?
Still get 1+1 to equal something other than 2...

I thought he was that good that he was not as experienced in the art of driving a three wheel car back to the pits as others:p
