Motor racing legend Frank Gardner passed away last night. This is a very sad moment. Frank was an absolute genius in both driving and engineering racing cars and was very successful. He was truely one of the best racer's to come from this country. R.I.P Frank.

Sad to hear that another of the legends of our sport has gone. He was a great allrounder - great driver, great engineer and team owner. Something that you don't see much of these days.

Not only a great on our shores, but a legend over in the British touring car scene of the late 60's and early 70's. A sad day when one of our greatest is taken from us.
RIP Frank

Very sad news. Not just a supremely talented driver and engineer, but someone who was never afraid to speak his mind. My condolences to his family.

A very very sad time, Frank was a legend on and off the track. My Dad knew Frank quite well, its hit him abit hard.

Tony Longhurst's 1st Sierra (Freeport car) was built in my Dads w/shop on the Nthn Beaches of Sydney & my greatest memory of Frank is me sitting in the Sierra at the ripe age of 7, doing a lap of Bathurst, making car noises (as the car was still only 50% built) and Frank leaning in to say.. "Mate that was one quick lap, you've stuck it on pole!!" :)

RIP Frank, you will never be forgotten

Also the Author of some very good Driving Books, 1 manual which was funded by Avis rent a Car I still have that book, it's called "Drive to Survive" I read it from cover to cover when i was 15 or 16. I still live by what it taught me. I loved the John Stoneham cartoons that accompanied each lesson.

Frank Gardner was a guest speaker at a car club meeting and he was brilliant! What a storyteller? He had some great motor racing yarns and he was totally dead pan and straightfaced while we were in stitches.

Years ago, I won a Frank Gardner tribute white terry towelling hat at a HSCRA meeting. That's something I won't sell.

Like Jack Brabham, I think Frank was under appreciated by Australians who didn't realise how great he was and what he had accomplished.

I have a copy of Drive to Survive

Both men spent the majority of their respective careers in Europe & as the F1 is Europe-centric (even more so when they Raced) so I do not find it surprising that their Talent is not as respected in Australia

Have any of the major newspapers had anything about Frank in them? We live in the country and our editions of the Sydney Papers have had nothing to note Franks' passing - a tragedy.

So many great stories.

"What the Holden Delaer Team nead to understand is you can't just jack up the windscreen and put a racecar underneath"

I had the great pleasure of meeting Frank Gardner at Symmons Plains just after he came back from Europe, Frank, Bob Jane, Peter Brock and I think John Harvey or it may have been Colin Bond were all sitting in the Castrol tent telling "war" stories, what a great experience, Frank was good at telling a story and had so many to tell, a really nice guy who would spend time talking to anyone who was not trying to set him up, do that and beware.

This may be of interest to some. frank's family has just started up a website dedicated to him. The page with a photo of models of all his cars is of interest. I worked out I have 10 of them.
