While looking through the thread Pug205 posted with pics from car museums in Japan I thought it would be good to start a thread to show members pics from various car museums that they have visited over the world. It seems we have some world travellers on the forum and I'm sure there are some great places to visit that many haven't heard about.

I've been fortunate with work travels to visit some pretty impressive places over the last (nearly) 9 years.

Bathurst Museum
Porsche - Old mueseum twice and new museum this year
Mercedes - twice to the old one and once to the new one.
Audi - twice
BMW - Old and new, once each
Schlumpf Mueseum (France)

I've got a heap of pics but they are all on my work computer. I'll get into them and post the good ones here somewhere. Might need a flickr account as there are a lot.

If anybody has pics/reviews/advice of these or other museums post away.

This is a great idea as it will give future travellers some great ideas as well.

I think that you may have forgotten the best car museum on the face of this earth, which I imagine that you would have visited.

The Bowdens

I'll post some pictures over the weekend :):)

I posted some photos from the recent F1 exhibition at Te Papa Museum here in Wellington, NZ, in this thread...

http://forums.biante.com.au/showthread.php?t=13571

I also visited the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuggart, Germany, a few weeks ago. That place is amazing. I'll post some photos from there in the next day or two.

in japan you can go to the auto museum,i think they have a shuttle bus that goes only to the museum, its like the size of the melb cbd, every jap car to ever been made is in there, saw it when they released the new gtr godzilla in 2007.
and there is a nice small one in tassie, launceston auto museum, has dick johnson sierra, heaps of old ones and bikes as well.

Fazination Nurburgring. Out in the middle of nowhere but well worth the trip to see the track as well. Lots to see there with interactive games (squeeze yourself into a F3 simulator) and a go-kart track underneath as well. You queue to get in alongside an F50

Galleria Ferrari. Was expensive and not a lot to see there when I went but apparently they have expanded it since then. Could stand so close to an Enzo that you could fog it up by breathing on it. Everything costs $ there!

Freemantle Motor Museum, not sure where its moved to but they had an Alan Jones Williams and a Lancia Stratos as well as a lot of British cars if they are your thing.

Ahh yes, Fremantle. Forgot about that one.

And no I have never been to see the Bowdens collection.

I'll try and get pics updated over the weekend.

I also forgot another one, the Minichamps museum in Aachen. Opened a couple of years ago and a very impressive place to visit for the avid model collector.

There's the Holden showroom in Melbourne (Salmon St, Port Melbourne) - and they have most of their concept cars on display. Must for any Holden fan (+ its free)

Most of them that are here (http://www.holden.com.au/concept-cars) (apart from volt and camaro). Have a few others that arent there (monaro concept, marilyn the monaro convertible etc).

I went to the Haynes (as in the car manuals) Museum in England in 2000. It is huge with a massive variety of cars. There is even a room with only red cars in it. It was freakin awesome. Unfortunately i didn't have a digital camera back then so all the pics are on film.:(

I couldn't believe how many cars they had there. It was more like a parking lot than a museum (an extremely expensive parking lot).

There are a few scattered around Aust - one in Maffra (Vic) and they change their theme every 3 months, another at the Top of Arthurs Seat (Vic) on Purves Rd not to forget the Fox Collection at Docklands (Vic). One in Launceston as we go there every Monday after the V8's in Tassie and not forgetting the one in Barrosa Valley at Birdwood (I think).

Here is a link that I found for more around the country http://www.carscene.com.au/tipstricks/museums.htm

Lived less than 5 minutes from that place for most of my life and never knew they had a car museum!

Will have to check it out at the next open day in April (missed the last one by two weeks)

Another one was the Hughes Brothers Holden Museum that started life in Bayswater, but I believe most of the cars are now displayed in the National Holden Museum in Echuca...some pristine Holdens in that collection!

Glad you liked my photos Lachlan. I'm currently using a Canon 50D, but I will probably be upgrading to the recently released Canon 7D sometime shortly as it seems to be a really good motorsport camera with excellent autofocus and a good frame-per-second rate.

Your Donington Park photos are really interesting, as several of those cars have just been on display here in Wellington. In the photo above, the #1 McLaren and the #12 Lotus 16 were here, as were the #5 Brabham, one of the Williams FW14B's and one of the McLaren MP4's.

Hi Guys, Back from Japan and have another Car Museum to add to this thread.

It is the STI GALLERY in Tokyo that opened a few months ago. Popped in on my last day and have to say it is quite underwhelming. It is on the second level of the STI dealership at Subaru's headquarters and contains a couple of competition cars that are changed often, some trophies, a STI timeline shown in models and some information on the roadcars. hopefully in time a bigger display can be made to showcase more of their great Rally history.

Totally agree Andrew, after the great Honda Museum I was expecting more. It was opened for STI's 20th anniversary and might just be a rush job. Considering Mazda and Nissan also have museums, it might be only a matter of time before somthing more significant is established.

Andrew
14-11-2009, 03:47 PM
And did you visit said Museums? The Red Park Nissan museum is said to be pretty good. If you'd timed your travel a little later (22 Nov) you'd have been able to attend the Toyota Motorsports Festival.

I got a leaflet about the Toyota festival and wish I was going to still be there. Coming home is depressing! Japan was fantastic and will have to go back again one day for sure.

Was close to the Mazda Museum but did not have time to get there. It shows alot about the cars production with a section on classic cars. The Nissan one would have been good to see but again was not able to find time to get there. Was travelling with a friend and had dragged her to enough things she was not interested as it was so best to be fair :D

Not really from a museum but could be the start of one, but when I was dropping off a 240Z at Nissan Head Office on Monday to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 'Z' car and came across this one in the area where the function was to be held. Not only was this on display but a 1963 Bluebird (restored by Nissan) and an early Patrol (that looked very agricultural).

The Museum you speak of is owned by Stuart Saunders (an Opthalmic Surgeon) who lives in the Canberra region.

He has a number of Bugati, Type 35

The Binalong Museum is basically a storage facility for Car's usually awaiting Mechanical work, basic Service up to an engine rebuild.

Stuart still owns the replica XJ13

Tasmanian Police had them as highway patrol cars at one stage. I got stopped by one when I was heading home from my friends place. The Skyline pulled up across the kurb to stop my friends and I from getting away. Had the full on talking to and read the riot act.

Was quite intimidating for a 10 year old!

These are a very small sampling of the museums & collections I've visited over the years.
Harrah's in Reno Nevada. In its day the biggest and best car museum in the world.
http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u101/Dragferret/ 2009_11270008.jpg
Imperial Palace in Las Vegas Nevada use to be a great musuem. Now it seems more like a high end car yard.

Memory Lane is up the road from Charlotte speedway.

North Carolina Auto Racing Hall Of Fame in Mooresville. Its not very big but its central. I left my car there while I visited the race teams in the area.

Wouldn't be great if at the end of Bathurst every year the winner was purchased or donated to an Australian National Auto museum to be kept for ever. Whenever I read in AMC about a Bathurst winner that has been lost I feel a little sad. Its history gone forever.I really believe that Bathurst rates along side all the great Australian sporting events.Even in New Zealand it is held in the highest regard. If you are a Kiwi motor racing fan, you have to be able to say you have been to Bathurst at least once. Just my thoughts. Cheers

If only those lucky ones who have Bathurst winners in there own collection, would donate or loan there cars to Bathurst museum.
Would have to expand the museum building somewhat, but this would certainly put it on the map as one of the great motoring museums in the world. Because right now it isnt.

Now beehive ssssccccchhhhwwwwwiiinnnggggggg ;)

haha, I really thought you guys went along for the cars, glad Hanna left an impression, she is a lovely girl.

Lost count of the amount of museums we have been to over the years, seems like Dad took us to everyone under the sun as a kid, then as adults (a term I use loosely) we have been to a nearly the rest both here, in NZ and in Europe. there was an amazing collection held by a beer magnate in Germany, it has been broken up a bit over the last few years, but pretty much every great sports car was in there.

Likewise, for those who want a tour of our cars check our site events page, some days coming up soon; www.bowdensown.com.au/events . March 7th is the next one.:)

This isn;t a car museum but an event I went to on the weekend down in Phoenix/Scottsdale Arizona - had a nightmare of a trip with flights cancelled and re-routed and our trip was cut short a day because of it ....

The Barrett Jackson Collector car auction is an amazing event - about 1500 collector cars all in mint condition going under the hammer ... I've certainly never seen so many amazing cars in the one spot - muscle cars - Camaro's, mustangs, cuda's etc then the 50's TBirds, hotrods, customs etc ... Here's a link to the photo's I took :

http://s791.photobucket.com/albums/yy192/buffalo23 96/Barrett%20Jackson%20Collector%20Car%20Auction%2 0Scottsdale/

The one car I really wanted to see was at another Auction called Gooding & Co on at the same time - This auction had some more of the high end Ferrari's, Rolls Royces, Deusenbergs etc ... but this 69 Trans Am Series Camaro racecar was beautiful - it ended up selling for 148K ( about 162K with buyers premium ) which I thought wasn;t too bad to a car with competition history at Sebring:

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2739/dsc05946.j pg (http://img251.imageshack.us/i/dsc05946.jpg/)

There were massive storms in Phoenix late last week and one of the other auctions - Russo & Steele - had there huge tent/marquee blown down - was very sad that millions of dollars damage was done to the cars that were stored in the tent - see attached link !!!

Dragferret, seeing this reminded me that when we were there in 2006 that yep it looks like a High end car yard/room with a lot of big price tagged items such as the Mustang from 'Gone in 60 seconds' and others except we came across this one.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x207/Motiv8or/0 73.jpg

Certainly not what we expected to see in there and I ended up asking one of the sales guys about it and he wanted more as it created a lot of interest and found it that it came from South Aust.

The pool table was cool although I think on the small side ... Dont know the story on the orange 65 fastback - it was hiding behind the Meguirs car care products stand - Look to be someone's "Pro-Touring" effort - looked good tho' I think I tend to lean a bit more towards the period look ... The highly customised cars ( Mustangs, Monaro's, Mopars, Hotrods ) were selling at the auction for what I thought were cheap prices compared to what I know it would have cost to build them !!

Don Garlits Museum in Ocala Florida. Many visits over many years.

Hot Springs New Mexico. This was described as a museum but more of a private collection. Very crowded and hard to see the cars. I had to ring the owner to get a viewing.

Tragedy In US History Museum St Augustine Florida. I had to check this one on Google to confirm it. I stumbled upon this backyard collection in a Florida backwater. I can't remember the details of the ambulance. The black sedan belonged to Lee Harvey Oswald. This is the car he drove to the book depository. The 1966 Buick Electra behind the glass was the car Jayne Mansfield died in. Apparently the guy who owned this stuff died in '96 and his wife auctioned everything off.

Some years ago I was in Oxford visiting a mate who worked for an offshoot of a then current F1 team. Was going to pick him up after work to go to the pub. Grabbed the camera as an afterthought and when I got to the factory I was invited to go to the warehouse next door and this is what greeted me....

That R35 is also the Spec V. Take a look at the wheels.

Yep it sure is. Looks awesome in the flesh!

Furthermore to the other thread that I started for individual's collections here is another that I would absolutely love to get into. Couldn't find any reference to it in this thread or when Pug205 went to Japan in 2009 with his thread. This is not to be confused with the Nissan Museum in Tokyo but a totally different collection.

Although it may not be everyone's 'cup of tea' but the DNA Garage in Zama, housing just over 400 cars that Nissan/Datsun and Prince produced (from the 30's to present day) is certainly one place that has heaps of motoring history. The cars are housed in in of the companies disused factories near Yokohama. What also makes this a bit more unique is that it is not open to the public and only for Nissan employees and even then it is not guaranteed that you will get in to see the cars.

As I said it may not be to everyone's liking but here are a couple of links of photos anyway

Thanks Sean! That is a fabulous collection! Group 5 Cars are very cool, but Group A is my favourite spec, so I liked seeing the Calsonic R32 and now I know where the ETCC R-31 is.

I am led to believe that there is one in there. There is a group from Australia going over next year and this is one of the places that they are hoping to get into see.

Do you mean Champions experience?

IIRC from what I read recently, they're still cleaning up.

Peter Champion said that he prefers to call it an experience rather than a Museum & doesn't care if the Cars just sit (even the repros) as its not about making money

Back in 2010 when we went to the USA we dropped into the Petersen Museum which is right near Beverly Hills.

Very interesting place to visit as it has a great varied collection of cars, every thing from some of the first cars ever built to modern hyper cars. Here are a few pics.

Gold Deloran anyone:

Sean, that Nissan warehouse is simply stunning. I've seen pics from this place before where lucky people got to go in and snap some pictures off. It's clear the photographer had a bit of a thing for the R390 GT1 road car. I don't blame him because I've got a bit of a thing for it myself. That, Toyota's TS020 GT-One road car, the Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR, Porsche's 911 GT1 and McLaren's F1 GT-R would make the most astonishing garage of 'road cars' on the planet (I know that Nick Short also loves the Dauer but I'm leaving that one out and trying not to be too greedy....)

I'm also a bit of a fan of this car:

http://www.nicoclub.com/articles/DNA-garage/images/DNAgarage-36.jpg

It's the homologation road car version of the R33 GT-R LM featuring the wide body that the Nissan racers used at Le Mans in 1995 for the 'Clarion' and the 'Keep the Dream Alive' cars. Another of the one-offs that are in that Nissan DNA collection.

I wondered if that Nissan warehouse also had the 1991 Spa 24Hr winning Zexel car (driven by Naoki Hattori, Anders Olofsson and David Brabham - arguably the GT-R's greatest ever international victory) but I couldn't see it there.

The rally cars were also magnificent and I really like that they've left them in as raced condition - take a look at Shekhar Mehta's Datsun 240Z Safari car!

Thanks so much for those links Sean.

I'd like to see if Toyota have a similar Museum. And of course the Porsche Museum is supposed to be one of the best in the world.....
