OK so are any Kiwi's from here heading down this year?
I'm heading down with pops for the 3rd time  Looking forward to finally getting some decent viewing of the track. Moved from the rubbish Main Straight grandstand to the Hinemoa stand :D
And what are peoples thoughts on the weekend? I personally am looking forward most to the V8 Utes racing. 16 utes from the Australian championship versus 16 utes from the NZ championship. NZ will get smashed, but it'll be entertaining, and if Australia gets coverage of it, it'll show the Hamilton circuit in a more promising light :)

Utes were a bit tame. Almost all finished. The racing at the front was pretty exciting though with Pither and Jane going at it hammer and tongs. More carnage on view in the Suzukis.
The Kiwis V8s were pretty good too. As for the V8SC what can you say Whincup is a machine!! Was not at all surprised to see Ricciadello chuck it in the concrete as his bakes were smoking badly every time he pitted yesterday and in fact he had a brake fire during P2.

It was good to see Tander get another strong result.:) Well done to Whincup though, 888 are bloody impressive this year.
Again, I thought Will Davison was hopeless.:( Even if he got to 11th from wherever he started before retiring, much better should still be expected from him.

Couldnt agree with you more mate, hopefully Courtney gets us a good result. With Whincup, dont want the bloke to crash lol maybe just a black flag or mechanical :P

Im glad to see GT is still getting good results, deffinatly helping him in his championship comeback :D I'm a huge GT fan so really hope he can seal the deal tomorrow...
The man i really feel sorry for at the moment is Will Davison. He just seems to have the worst luck atm. Today wasn't his fault and imo he really deserved a top 10 finish after an amazing fightback in the race after starting 24th.
I know alot of people have been saying that Will isn't performing really well and shouldn't be there. I sort of agree, but the main of the problems havn't nessacerily been his fault. Sure he shouldn't be all the way down the order, due to his bad qualifying efforts, but he has had a few unfortunate mechanical issues. In race 1, in Abu Dhabi, he had his engine let go, which wasn't his fault...In race 5, in Adelaide, he had a solid result but could have gotten an even better one if lowndes didn't take him out, as he does....and Race 6, having steering difficulties with the car...At the AGP, even though it's not a champ round, he had a pretty solid result, finishing fourth for the weekend im pretty sure.
In todays race, as i said above, he was looking good to have a solid result, which may have been a sign of better things to come, before stopping with only 5 laps to, due to the car dropping a cylinder.
I wouldn't write Will off yet, i wouldn't say that all of his 2010 results so far are his fault, hopefully HRT can get the heads around the car, trying to find out what the problem is. Hopefully at the next round at Queensland Raceway, he can come out with all guns blazing and really show that he hasn't forgotten how to drive and he still has the potential.....atm his future is on the line and his contract runs out at the end of this year with HRT, hopefully for Will's sake, they give him a chance and re-sign him for a few more years....
Also Murphy, that bloke just can't seem to catch a break....really felt sorry for him when he was taken out in that turn 2 kaos which wasn't much of his own doing and then having a few mechanical issues...again!!!
He's in the same sort of situation, the team jus't cant their heads around the car and mainly every race for Greg this year has been a disaster due to mechanical failures in the engine.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a good race, may the best man win and hopefully for Will and Greg's sake, they can get a decent result out of the weekend.
Cheers Josh

Totally disagree!!
Street races are awesome especially whilst you're in the crowd. There's nothing like the cars rubbing walls rather than getting stuck in sand traps.
That's one thing I didn't like about the other overseas races, they had waaay too much runoff which made life much easier for the drivers.

Slight disagreement Tony. Just got back from Hamilton and I can confirm that all the other categories this weekend were awesome to watch :D The V8's though really don't suit the track. not enough room in breaking areas for them to really do anything but follow the leader. The sooner the V8's move to Hampton Downs, sadly, the better.
That said, it was an awesome weekend :D Even though none of the drivers I really follow had a good one  Whincup is insane. In-freaking-sane. Highlights of the weekend would have to be the upskirt on the big screen (the camera man was possibly getting a bit curious on the pit-straight?), getting all the signatures I was after bar Tanders (typical..) a getting a decent haul of V8 goodies, and the big trans-tasman battle between Chris Pither and Rodney Jane in race 2 of the V8 Utes

Pither and Kim Jane were outstanding in both races 1 & 2. Don't know what went wrong for Jane in Race 3 as Pither just streeted him. Was very disappointed with the last BNT V8 race. What a complete stuff up that start was. I was on pit wall down by GRM's garages and even I could see that that Go was FAR too late. I can tell you Scooter was NOT a happy camper when he got back to the pits.
Missed the upskirt on the big screen, but did see those Monster girls close up. By far the promo highlight of the weekend :D
As for the main event, I was wrapped for 'my' boys. A job well done by the team ended in a great result for Michael and Lee. Must say though that Garry Rogers himself was pretty understated in his reaction. One interesting T8 piece that may not have made it to telecast was Craig Lowndes re entry to the race after going to the Garage. After failing to find anything wrong the team wheeled him back out to the pit apron and proceeded to carry out one of the most mickey mouse stops for fuel and tyres that you are likely to see.
One great site standing where I was came towards the end of the race as the shadows made it quite dark there, and as a result you could really see the brake disks glowing as they slowed for Turn 1. Some of the guys like the podium finishers hardly glowed at all while Craig Lowndes had them heated up to rival the red on the livery. Really wish I had been allowed my camera.
Cheers

Well, Queensland raceway is no longer the only race that I've fallen asleep in front of now. Both days were an absolute snoozefest in the V8s. Glad the people at the track had some good racing to see cos there wasn't any on the tv.
Just before I fell asleep today, I had the idea that, since Ch7 care more about the 3 people in Adelaide who would have watched Port get smashed again rather than the several thousand who would have watched the V8s and caught up on some sleep, and since Ch 7 care nothing about the complaints of the people who watch V8s, maybe I should do a mass email to the advertisers (KFC, Supercheap et al)? If Ch7 won't listen to the viewers, maybe they will listen to the advertisers where they get their $ from? After all, if enough people complained to the advertisers, they would start asking questions as to how their $ are being spent and then maybe people would take the viewers seriously?

you could see him clowning around in the cockpit as well as he came down pit lane, and then lit the tyres up after passing the control line at the end of the lane, was a little humourous that the ever eagle eyed Crompton/Skaife show somehow missed

Just want to add my voice to those who are critical of the Ch7 coverage of the V8 Race Events. Chopping the coverage up to slot in a VFL game is an insult - and El Cocko should take it as such ! A loooong long way to go at 7 before they consider V8's to be anywhere near as important as (any sort of) footy.
But what is even more annoying, Ch7 now has "7TWO" that it could use to give FULL coverage (eg Support races, whole Podium presentation, etc), and what did it use it for yesterday ?? From 12noon to 6pm it showed 3 movies - one from 1968, the next from 1969, and the third from 1987 ! What a waste of a digital channel, BUT, obviously, more important and interesting than the V8 Event.
Our sport is not just a long way down the list from footy, Tony C, but a long way behind old movie re-runs as well, at least in Ch7-land. Time to negotiate a better TV deal for the fans, Mr V8 Supercar Events. We are getting shabby service from the current deal.
Leigh

...antisiphoning laws apply to the second digital channels, so they can not show the V8's or the support races on 7Two unless it is, or already has been shown on Ch7...
The V8's have been scheduled around the football for several years now...the reality is that they are a long way down the pecking order compared to those events!

I see what you're saying (and am not up to speed on these Laws), but, nevertheless, Free To Air digital ( "more....and its free!") should result in a better deal for the V8 Fans. I don't want to have to get Pay-TV just to watch V8's , fair enough.
So maybe the re-negotiating has to occur at a different level or place. Digital is, or soon will be, available everywhere, so there should be a way that one digital channel can show footy, and another, on the same Network, can show V8's - and do it justice. How can 3 old movies be better?
I like the way 10 does it with F1. They still run the late-night Sunday broadcast on 10, but show much more (and usually earlier) on OneHD (Qualifying, pre-race, race, podium and interviews -over Sat and Sun). A similar set-up for V8's can't be bad for anyone, surely? And if V8 Events can negotiate mega$$'s out of gov'ments to stage street races, surely they can put such a reasonable argument as well. I just want better TV on V8's - I go to 2 or 3 V8 Events in person each year, but I can't go to them all, so TV has to do. But it has got to get better than it is - the excuses of limited Free-to-Air time from years past have now gone. "Digital - Its Free - and there's MORE " ! - yeah, sure. The V8 fans deserved better coverage than we got of the Hamilton Event.

Oh and did i mention that aussie rules is GAY:p
Couldn't have said it better myself!
BTW does anyone know what Van Gisbergen said on the radio during qualifying? I couldn't make it out but Larko said he needed a good kick up the arse for that.

Oh well all part of racing. Whincups 200pts ahead of JC! Big lead to have this early in the comp! Does anyone know what his salary is?
I think he signed for about $70K a year back in 06 for 3 years. After almost winning the championship in 07 and then winning it in 08, I believe his salary went up to around $600K. And judging by the cool 'toys' he owns, I'd say it's about right.
I wonder how Gary Rodgers feels :D

He was whinging about putting the car back on the truck.............and then pulled out 3rd fastest time up to that point. Larko said that he needed reminding that he was a contracted employee who was being paid to do a job.

I didn't see the broadcast, but the biggest problem I have with 7 is there coverage outside of the race broadcast. Sunday nights news had 5 seconds of footage and mentioned who won, all after what seemed like 10 minutes on AFL rubbish.

It getting a bit old hearing how boring it is fellas. Dead set watch something else if you do not like it. Sick of hearing it every round
I enjoy every race and thought last weekend was one of the better ones I've seen. I'm sick of hearing it too, i don't see what the issue is. Some tracks are better than others, yes. But I'm a fan so I'll always enjoy it no matter what.

Something along the lines of "the car is crap may as well put it on the truck back home"
Larko's comment made me laugh though.

...antisiphoning laws apply to the second digital channels, so they can not show the V8's or the support races on 7Two unless it is, or already has been shown on Ch7...
How do TEN get around showing the GPs first on ONE HD & then later on TEN ??

I had a great weekend up there. Positives were John Bowe, Tim Shenken, Tomas Mezera, James Moffat and Mark Skaife were very approchable and chatty.
Negatives were Lion Red beer, yuk. Had to go to the Bundy and Cokes. Murph going so well early and drifiting back. Dunno the story there.
I like Holdens to win but JW just butchered the field. There was nobody within miles.
Still it's our only round, so you have to get into it.
Got a 1:43 West Brock Monaro and an Allan Moffat A9X in 1:43 also.
The worst part of the weekend was getting a call after we got home. A mate was burgled while we were away and his die cast collection and memorabilia was ripped off.
Cheers Graeme.

How do these laws work? As there is a lot shown on One which isn't shown on TEN.

Chev, you may find it is this part. Here in Canberra at least, OneHD is the only Ch10 owned high definition channel offered. Ch7 has 2, &two being the second one.

I was hoping for Mezera and Skaife's signatures...but I never saw Tomas, and I only saw Skaife on that C7 platform :(
Murph developed a missfire in race 1, although that was when he was already in 16th.
Sad to hear about your mates collection being taken. There's some real nobs out there.
Here's a few random shots from the weekend. Mind the crap quality of the racing shots. Neither me nor my camera are fit for taking shots of moving things.

The interior of a TKR V8 Supercar at the venue. Was dressed up in VZ Pannels with the 05 (or 06?) livery, but was as you can see, an upgraded VT/VX.

The view from where I was on the Hinemoa stand at turn 3. Not that bad. Although it'd be better somewhere in the middle. I was on the bay on the edge.

As far as I know, not everything is covered by theses laws. The Aus GP is and hence is on Ten & One at the same time but the overseas races are obviously not covered by it and shown on One live and Ten on replay later.

Antisiphoning laws only relate to events on the "antisiphoning list". Mostly the premier sports categories...
By the letter of the law, these must be shown preferentially on one of the 5 analogue stations. This will not change until the analogue signal is switched off.
If it appears on 1HD and not 10, you can guarantee that sport is not on the list...

Thanks for the explanation, Leigh. Since I'm happy that the law is there and prevents the V8's from being siphoned off to Pay TV, I guess I have to put up with a bit of footy disruption and the like. And I note your comment about the analogue being switched off - I hope when this occurs, and we all have all the Free-to-Air Digital Channels, that Ch7 will show one "premier sport" (say footy), and 7TWO is able to show the V8 coverage we yearn for. Here's hoping ! Bring on the Digital Future.

The laws don't mention analogue they refer to free to air tv and pay tv - The following from the goverment web site.
"The objective of the anti-siphoning scheme is to ensure that certain events are available to the whole viewing public by preventing pay TV licensees from acquiring exclusive rights to listed events. Under section 115 of the Act, the Minister may gazette a list of events or events of a kind that the Minister believes should be available free to the general public. The current anti‑siphoning list comprises domestic and international sporting events in 12 categories including cricket, tennis, golf, motor sports and the football codes."
There is also the anti hoarding law as well.
While the Government's anti-siphoning provisions aim to ensure that as many Australians as possible have the opportunity to watch significant events on free-to-air television, these provisions do not deal with live coverage of listed events.
The anti-hoarding provisions require commercial television licensees who acquire the right to televise a designated event, but who do not propose to fully use that right, to offer the unused portion to the ABC and SBS for a nominal charge within a specified offer time. The national broadcasters must also offer unused portions of rights to each other.
I don't see how any of this would stop Seven using one of there free to air digital chanels to show the V8's

If you want a sig from either Davison or Tander, prepare to wait outside their pit for hours and really shove the item in their face when they come out. Otherwise, they'll just walk straight past you most of the time.
I was talking to a guy at Clipsal who said he'd spent a stack of time outside the HRT pit all weekend and still couldn't get a sig.

I waited outside HRT for hours all weekend  I found Will actually pretty cool. He came out a few times and I got a few sigs and he was quite good about it and talkative (for an HRT driver...lol) :p

Thanks for this, spolyhronidis. And the answer to your second sentence lies in the link you posted !
Just click that link, then select "the Facts" from the menu on the left, and read the final dot-point on that page. In effect it says : current anti-siphoning laws restrict listed programs to the Free-to-Air Broadcaster's main channel. (But these Broadcasters want the Law updated to allow more sport to be shown on their other F-t-A channels -might have to start a letter writing campaign to local MP's ??? - and to His V8ness, Mr Cochrane, as the V8 Series is on the List.). At least we know where we now stand.

I did that at Bathurst in '07.....gave up waiting for Skaife....so went to the official signing (the one near the marshalling area) instead.....
Did bump into Tander outside of HRT last year....and even got a pic...
I went to homebush last year, dunno if that made the difference but I was outside the hrt pit a few times over the weekend and got both tander and davo to sign multiple things each for me. I found lowndes and whincup much harder to het hold of (due to popularity mainly)
