Today, i bought one of the Richards/Rydell Bathurst winning Volvo's from my local hobby shop. Is this a rare buy because if my memory serves me correctly this is only the second one ive seen around? Any info would be much appreciated
Cheers

Bargs, I dunno about rare as like all our models they are a limited edition. I do know that I've only ever seen ONE in the shops here, & I bought it! Not because I especially like Volvos or Supertourers - I don't - but because it was a Bathurst winner & has Gentleman Jim's name on it. Also unusual in that it has a FIVE cylinder engine. I believe that it's still available from this site, if nowhere else. Good little model, especially the interior, but I found the underbody & the grille disappointing. What do you reckon, is that grille a print or a sticker?

I picked the model up for exactly the same reasons. Personally, i think the grille is a sticker. Does your car have a right passenger/front window? I just took it out of the box for the first time and im a bit worried its either broken or defective as mine does not have one. You seem to like bathurst winners so you might know the answer to my question. Was there ever a Skaife/Richards bathurst 2001 winners car in 1:43 scale made for sale individually? Ive seen the box set of 4 but thats a bit much if i only want the one car.

I think that you will find that the 2001 bathurst winner of Skaife/Longhurst was only produced as part of the 2001 HRT set in 1:43

Bargs, I think that Grubby is right re the 2001 Bathurst winner. I agree about a 4-car set, it's a bit excessive, especially as the differences are pretty minimal. My VoVo doesn't have the right-front window either, I suppose for the RHD version of the model. In the same vein, my Murphy/Ingall (who put those 2 together in the same car - Enforcer meets Aggressor!) Vectra from the same race is RHD, but as it is a modification of the LHD model, it doesn't have the LEFT-front window!

Ditto guys, Volvo and Vectra windows. Regarding the Volvo, mine does not have the driver's names printed on either back window, although the respective National flags are there. Can you guys check yours and let me know what they're like? I'm not sure if I have a misprinted Factroy Blooper, a rare 'as-it-unloaded-from-the-truck-before-they-put-the-stickers on' one-off(!) or if that's how they all came.
Re: 1:43 2001 Bathurst winner... wasn't there talk of that eventually being released as a stand alone model? Can't seem to remember where I heard that...

Mark Wicks, congratulations, you have a rare one off! Well, its different to mine as it has both Rydell and Richards printed next to the respective national flags as well as on the rear window it has both driver names as well. What about you Steve?

I have several of the 1/43 850 and S40 race cars including the Richards/Rydell car , got to meet both drivers who are very professional in their approach to racing as I attended the 2 Bathurst 1000 races in '97 & '98, the 5 cylinder engine is actually the British engine and the same block run in the 2.5 litre engine just resleeved to meet the 2 litre regulations of Super Tourers , they went with the 5 cylinder because they balance better (less than 90 degrees between combustion cycles) , remember the great Audi Quattro rally cars many years ago same thing for the same reason , better balanceing and there for higher revs and power.

Historic, I'll take your word for it on balancing in racing form, but what about in road cars? I remember reading a "Wheels" test in the mid-80's comparing a 5-cyl Audi against a V6 Volvo (I think) against a Turbo Saab. The basic conclusion was that the 5 was neither as smooth as the V6 or as pokey as the Turbo-4. The quote was something like:"you CAN take most of the shakes out of a 5, but not all". Recently, VW spent something like $13 million developing and ironing out the many bugs in their V5 for the Bora. I can't figure out why when every test I've read on that car reckon that it's nothing special.
