In Bangkok there are Holden Police Cars.

They are actually VN/VP Calais' with the Formula body kit (on some, some do not have a body kit), silver in colour with just the red light strip on the roof (some also have a police emblem on the side, but many are unmarked except for the lights). Interestingly enough they are pwoered by a 2 litre (All the Commodores I have seen over here are 2 litres...sales duty on cars in Thailand is dependant on engine size).

Not much chance of a model of on of these (wouldn't expect it to be that popular anyway) but I'll try and get a photo and post it up.

Bangkok Bob,
I'll be interested in seeing a pic. Do you know what the 2 litre motors are out of?

The 2 Litre motor is apparently (or suspected to be) the one that appeared in the late Camira's. Or at least, the evolution of that motor.

I have been trying to find a picture I took a while ago, but haven't had any luck. It can sometimes be hard to get photo's of this sort of thing as Bangkok police are so corrupt that they give you a strange look when you point a camera at them and it certainly is a look that makes you put it away quickly.

It is interesting that there seems to be Commodores (actually they are mostly all badged Calais) from VL onwards here (all seem to have the 2 Litre badge as well). I do see a few Aussie cars over here which is nice. The occaisonal LJ Torana, Commodores (you can almost be gauranteed on seeing at least a couple a week), an old HT Wagon, a HR, and an old Valiant Ranger. Aussie Fords are more scarce. I used to see an XD on a regular basis but do not see it anymore, other than that I have seen an XF once (it was actually a deadringer for the one I have in Aus).

I will definitely try and get a picture soon. THey seem to park them down the road from my work occaisonally, so I will keep my eye out. I carry my camera with me most days when driving to and from work...just in case something worth photographing happens.

Found a picture. It is actually one without the body kit.

Next time I see a Commodore (Calais) in a car park I will take a picture of it from behind and you can see the way it is badged as a 2 litre.

The picture is attached (but might not show up for a couple of days as Admin will have to moderate it).

Interestingly, the Bangkok police only use these on the freeways from what I can work out. Most of the time they use Twincab utes, but there certainly is a few fo these Calias' around.

Four cylinder commodores we mainly made for the NZ maket I think. The last one we had in oz was the VH, I think, they dropped them due to lack of sales, (and grunt)

I think you are right Glenn. I work with a coupla Kiwi's over here and they have mentioned the four cylinder commodores in NZ.

I have actually already posted the picture, but it doesn't seem to have shown up. I will wait until tommorrow, in case it is just awaiting moderation (as Admin approves all pictures prior to them appearing) and if it hasn't shown, I will post it again.

Does anyone know any more about the motors in them? All I know is that is supposed to be the late model Camira motor, but don't know this for sure. If anyone does know, it would be great to find out.

Regarding the up an coming Biante Police car series a friend of mine who is in a position to know was telling me that all states are about to embark on a complete livery change over however some states have already completed the change over but states such as NSW are just starting to come on line with a national Police livery, this means that all cars in all states including Highway Patrols will have identical Livery with the only exception being the Police Badge for each state which will be located in the bottom right hand corner of the front door on all cars. So collecting a Police car from all states just may end up being a little bit like collecting HRT's, might be an idea to consentrate on ones own state and forget the rest.

So it is a Statesman. I must admit I am not up on the different Holdens of this era (yeah, okay, I'm a Ford fan that has been a little igonrant).

I suspected it to be a Statesman, but did not know if the Calais possibly had the Chrome grill.

There is also a tendency of cars over here being a bit modified (The XD I used to see had XF tailights....how did I know it wss an XD and not an XF? because close examination revealed the poor fitting tailights and the slightly sharper edges the XD had. As well as the XD seats (with the big plastic headrests).

The confusion over the holden is worsened by the fact that when i see a Co one on the road, I have often been behind and only seen the Calais badge. I guess they have a mix of these cars.

Sorry guys, I'm straying from the subject of the thread.

Thanks for clarifying it was a Statesman V8 Coupe.

Is it a statesman, it does not look long enough, hard to say without seeing the rear.

Looking at the back window, it looks to be different to a statesman. Might be a commodore / calais with a statesman style front. Seeing they have changed the engine, may have changed some other things.

V8Coupe,

Thats it I knew it looked strange but now that I have seen the reference photos, its definately not a statesman rear end, statesman front end yes.

Can you imagine the power to weight ratio, if it was a statesman, they were very fat in those days, even this car (in Pic) with a 4 pot is going to struggle out of start stop city traffic.

I guess they don't have too many high speed chases in Bangkok.

When I was last there I was supposed to have a limo transfer to downtown Bangkok, "what turned up as my limo" a VL calais.

At least we have cool looking cop cars here in OZ. And I definately don't wont one chasing me.

Actually the potential for high speed chases in Bangkok exists (in that qwuite regularly you will see people doing 150 + along the elevated tollways), but admittedly you seem to be able to go past a cop car whilst doing this speed without raising a reaction. I guess its because the cars they are driving don't have aq chance.

Seeing as you are always going through tollbooths, they just wait until you get to the toolbooth and the cops there will pull you over (like happened to me on the weekend....fortunately I played dumb...cannot speak Thai (lie), no I wasn't speeding (lie), no I don't have an international licence (true)..thank you officer...he let me go:)
