View Full Version : ROSSI first test ride on the yammie

motogp riders are testing at sepang malaysia.
best time recorded yet is max biaggi on the honda at 2.02.585
rossi in his first laps on the yamaha recorded a best of 2.03.80
he was the best of the 4 yamaha riders and outpaced a few of the 8 hondas testing.
when he dials in we will see if the inline 4 can match it with the v5 honda...that remains the big question..is the inline 4 obsolete?

It definately seems like the inline fours last chance doesn't it? Ah well, if Rossi can't make it work then I doubt that anyone can. It's gonna be fun finding out though!

Rossi was lapping quicker on the M1 than times from the GP there in October aboard the RC211V.... and was only a tenth off Biaggi's testing times... Hmmm... gunna be a good season!

Here's a bit more detailed article i found on this subject on Australian Car Directory (http://www.australiancardirectory.com.au)
Rossi Finally Rides Yamaha
26/01/04 SEPANG - In gruelling heat Valentino Rossi (Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team) was inside his own previous lap record of 2m 03.82 seconds at the 5.548km Sepang track in testing today.
He recorded a best time of 2m 02.75 seconds in the final session of this intensive three-day test putting in a total of 59 laps. But the reigning MotoGP World Champion is keen to put in more hard development work here in just over two weeks time.
"We did some good work," he said. "The time we made was good for a first test, but tyres and chassis settings were the main aim here. I've really enjoyed my first three days with Yamaha, I'm very happy. There's still work to do on the engine and we'll carry on with that, but overall things have been good."
The World Champion's Crew Chief Jerry Burgess was quietly satisfied with events. "I guess we're doing okay," he said. "We've achieved enough for a fast time and we were running according to the Michelin test programme. Things have been very harmonious in terms of integration with Yamaha and now we'll go away and work on whatever the Yamaha Development Group have got for us."
Rossi's team-mate Carlos Checa (Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team) who rode a best lap of 2m 03.72 seconds during an arduous 88-lap stint, was happy with the endurance work he did and feels there is more to come from chassis settings in the weeks ahead.
"The bike feels better with the 16.5-inch front tyre," said the hard-charging Spaniard who tried both 17-inch and 16.5-inch fronts. "The race endurance test was not so bad, and this was only the first test of the season. Of course we've got more to do but we have all we need to achieve results."
Checa's Crew Chief Antonio Jimenez was content with the three days work at this early stage of the testing programme. "The race simulation distance test provided valuable information for us," he said. "We were focussed on that and this is just the beginning of our programme."
Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha Team Director Davide Brivio was frank about his surprise at the rapid progress made here at Sepang. "I didn't honestly expect we'd be at his level so soon," he said. But the Italian expressed caution too. "All our competitors will work hard this winter too, but this is a good first test to motivate everyone in the team and everyone from Yamaha."
Marco Melandri (Fortuna Gauloises Tech 3 Team) rode 52 laps and put in a best time of 2m 05.55 seconds. "Better than yesterday," said the tough Italian, still sore from recent shoulder surgery. "In the end the bike was okay but I took time to adjust to the 16.5-inch front tyre I tried today. At the moment my mind is strong but not my body."
Norick Abe (Fortuna Gauloises Tech 3 Team) couldn't quite make the most of a selection of Michelin tyres that suited his style well. "That was a bit so-so," said the experienced Japanese rider. "We're still not quite there with the settings, but we have not worked together before as a team. Even so I couldn't get the time I felt the tyres were capable of." Abe rode 52 laps with a best lap of 2m 05.05 seconds.
Fortuna Gauloises Tech 3 Team Director Herve Poncharal believes his newly formed team benefited greatly from this Yamaha-only test. "We needed this first test to establish communication with new riders. For Marco this is his first ride since Phillip Island last year and he's not 100% fit yet. The 16.5-inch front tyre is helping him and we weren't here for lap times anyway - that's not an excuse - it's a fact. Norick is more of a racer than a tester and he looks very motivated. As the team begins to understand his needs more, we can expect more from him too."
enjoy. :)

"The most revealing test session of the preseason so far begins today in Malaysia, with no fewer than eleven top teams descending on the Sepang International Circuit for three days of intense development work.
MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi will come face to face with his former Honda colleagues for the first time since his controversial switch to Yamaha, whilst the likes of Ducati, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Aprilia are all sure be comparing their latest bike and rider combinations with the two giant Japanese factories."

The M1 looks awesome with just the carbon fairing. I reckon it would be cool if they just ran it like that for the year!
I saw a Ducati 999R with a plain carbon fairing at the MC News Expo at the Phillip Island GP in October.... that looked just as good!

still the man...
"Valentino Rossi started the 2004 MotoGP season in exactly the same way he finished in 2003, topping the rider standings and driving home in a brand new BMW Z4 after the MotoGP Official Test at the Circuit de Catalunya. Rossi, riding the Yamaha YZR-M1, set a lap of 1’44.571 during the 40-minute timed and televised ‘Official Practice’ this afternoon despite cool track temperatures at the Barcelona venue to win the sports convertible ahead of Honda riders Colin Edwards and Sete Gibernau. Rossi now also leads the BMW Award – MotoGP Best Qualifier competition, with a model 645Ci on offer at the end of the season for the riders with the lowest accumulated qualifying times, and has delivered a huge psychological blow to the pretenders to his World Championship crown"motogp.com

anyone watch the GP bikes last nite or were you all busy watching the logies?
rossi becomes the only the second rider (our BAZZAthe other) to win the opening round of the premier class 4 years running..one of many records this bloke will smash
how good is he, and how much better is the 04 yammies handling, but JB will have to find some straight line speed or he is dead in the water at faster tracks.

I caught the last 10 laps on my break at work last night, I was on the edge of my seat!!!! He was also the first person ever to win consecutive races on 2 different makes...... I missed the first 5 laps of the race, but like Glen, was watching the race from the edge of my seat. Thank god for live coverage on Fox as it has got to be one of the best races I've ever watched.
What I thought was interesting, was how Rossi was able to keep Max at an arm's length even when he was following. Sure things will be a lot different when they head to more open tracks, as the Honda seem to have much better drive off the corners.
I think this just shows the world how good Rossie is & just how average Max is (compared to Rossi), considering he now has superior equipment.
cheers. :)

yes brad, i couldnt agree more with your support of rossi but i think you are a bit hard on biaggi a 4 time 250 champ and the second most succesful 250 rider of all time.
after 3 years of getting horsewhipped he seems to lack a little confidence IMO, he rode a very timid race with apparent superior horsies.
if max were head rossi in a few races you may see a return to the arrogant form that got him the nick the roman emporer.
now thats what i would like to see compete against rossi

Saw it, Rossi earnt my respect. I'm a big Max Biaggi, but I'm sure he'll be Honda's major championship contender. Gibernau was a little disappointing. Who saw the 250's? What a fightback from Porto.

It's shows how much talent Rossi got.
He's a class above the others on his talent.
The late and great Barry Sheen said he's a talent to watch out for back when Rossi ran at Phillip Island in the 125 class.
He'll be up against it at the faster tracks for sure, but the bike and him are going to get faster.!
Rock on Rossi.....:D

I watched all three races despite having to get up at 03:45 to go to work! Taped all three and will be keeping them. WOW!!!!! If that's the standard of racing we are going to see this year in all three divisions it is going to be awesome! Those were three of the best races I've ever seen.
We saw an Aussie podium, a legendary ride from 22nd to 3rd and Rossi become the first ever rider to win back to back races on different makes of bike. Classic stuff!
I can't wait for the rest of the season.

While Rossi can definately handle a bike, remember it's the rest of the guys like Jeremy Burgess (who also defected from Honda with Rossi) who have taken the M1 from mid pack runner to a race winning package.
Awesome performance all round from the Yamaha team.
Was there anyone else in the race apart from Rossi and Biaggi? If so, you could have fooled me!
Take nothing away from Rossi, awesome performance. Interesting to see how emotional he appeared to be when he finished the race, stepping off the bike and sitting on the ground.

Capirossi did the smart thing of sticking with what he knew with the 17 inch front and Baylis went to the 16.5 inch front because he will have to use it sooner or later, but in a race situation, not a good idea. He's also just having trouble with the bike in general.

Bloody good race wasn't it !!!
I was suprissed to see Max re-catch (& then ride away from)Rossie towards the end of the race when I thought Rossi was going to run away with it.
Things might have been a bit more interesting had Sete managed to stay on the bike, that said, Max rode a brilliant race & deserved the win.
I'm a little concerned that with all these falls & poor results, we might see Troy Bayless lose his ride at the end of the season.
cheers.

Rossi's tyres went off really badly and he didn't do himself any favours. The Yamaha watching it looks like it slides quite a bit more than the Honda.
I wouldn't be worried about Bayliss, he'll probably fall back on a Ducati SBK ride, which wouldn't be bad seeing how bad their MotoGP team is.

I feel Troy will be looking elsewhere for a ride next year. Rossi simply ran out of rubber as the Yam doesn't seem to have the grunt out of the corners that the Honda has and Rossi had to ride much harder to compensate.
Good to see Max back at the pointy end. Sete I feel has psyched himself out and is feeling the pressure. The mid season break will hopefully help him get it all back together.
