Hey people,

this is probably a silly question, but what kind of professions/occupations do you fellow collectors possess, and whether they reflect your interests with model collecting? You see, I've been collecting 1/18 cars for almost 10 years now (recently started purchasing Autoart/Biante models - awesome!) and was mentioned by friends that my admiration for collecting these precious replicas is a reflection of my creative personality since I was young (me being a Graphic/ industrial design student).

I don't have a great interest for motorsport, and I know that alot of collectors out there collect because of this. Anyway, I guess my creative aptitude reflects my interests, and was just wondering whether you guys out there are like this, or completely opposite!

What a great read this old thread made, wonder if many of us have changed professions in the past 12 months since.

I'm considering moving the family to Sunny QLD (where all the good V8 teams go) :) And start working for myself, contracting to my current employer.

Who works for themselves, whats the benefits and downers from your point of view, are you "sole trading" or a limited liability company?

Love to know.

Cheers

I rode the wave of consulting for a good number of years. I was at my current client for three years before they finally said "come on board or get out". The job market being the way it is, I relented. I like the work, it's close to home and the dress is SUPER casual.

I don't make what I made as a consultant, but now I'm forced to take vacations. When I was a consultant, I built vacation into the hourly rate, but then felt bad whenever I took time off. It's a tough cycle to break.

I've been a sole trader of sort’s contract selling in IT for a small company since July last year.

Four main things that spring to mind:

1. Inconsistancy of income, major planning required.
2. In my case, it is sort of seasonal you really only get about 10 months of the year to count on good income.
3. Choosing when to go on leave can be hard, if you have the choice, no work no pay.
4. The freedom is good.

how you platform your business pursuits will depend upon lots of factors. best you get good financial (accounting) advice, prior preferrably, to undertaking your chosen business/s. things to consider are your revenues, future prospects and distributions of profits...we have just registered our 3 rd company which is also our second trust. good luck whatever you choose.

i too was reading the old thread contained within the old thread and saw 2 interesting posts from february 2003...one by a fellow named richard poole who was having cabinets made for his models.....well didya....where are the fotos you promised.....
and another post by frosty and his desire to use the national banks funds to buy biante, my advice wayne is it might be a good time to try again..bnring it up at the special GM, could be a winner, better for sure than foreign currency trading or homeside etc;)

unfortunately i am off to visit your institution again this week and then i may be back to work myself

Basically, my collecting has nothing to do with what i've done for work. It has more to do with the fact that I used to buy and play with Hotwheels as a kid(wish I still had them all now). I also buy them because i'll never have the $$$$$ to buy the real deal.
Cheers

One big difference is the rate of tax - company tax is less than top marginal rate. Other items can be liabilities. Best to check with your accountant for advice on your particular situation.

Over the years I have been a sole trader, back when you needed min. 2 directors, partnership with Trevor and for a lot of years now Pty Ltd company. These days there are a number of companies, plus a very switched on accountant.

differences kiwiracing, where to start...

have done a unit on corporations law as part of my law degree, and as part of my combined commerce...

um... get a copy of the corporations act 2001: this is available in electronic form from www.austlii.edu.au but it is not 100% up to date...

legal mumbo jumbo, but there is a part called the 'small business guide' which summarises some main sections of the act.

otherwise, i will look at one of the books i have on the subject, and grab some general info out for you: why you want to know, to give me an idea, you want ramifications for accounting or legal purposes etc...? maybe get some legal/accounting advice.

ok, will post info later, as it is 1:45 am, and i'm sick of studying, goin to bed.

Paranoid must have his own practice now, as in 12 lines a person would not have discovered if there were any differences at all.
Famous lawyer speak, which must be the first lesson in their class - on the onehand it could be this, BUT then again it could be .......

Paranoid studies till all hours, I am still downloading email - up to 212/369 so should not be too much longer.................. Bev
