Having done the different mediums in creating decals, and seeing how well the waterslide ones are sitting on the Longhurst car,
Maybe a pertinent Question is; what would be the prefered decal medium? vinyll or waterslide??
This in reality can only be anwsered by the people that have used the Longhurst and the Harvey decals, but of course any constructive input is more than welcome.
Vinyll is more robust, but does have an ever so slight lip and esspecially black vinyll on a white background.
If I get the same people to make the upcoming ones in the same manner and Quality as the Longhurst ones ,would this maybe the preferred option?

Bert,
My view is slightly prejudiced given most of my modelling work (95%) is waterslide, but i have found waterslides to be extremely easy to lay (setting solution works wonders) and have not had any issues in over 15 years of modelling.

Hi Bert,
the way I see it if you can get good quality water slide decals that do not let the colour under them bleed through, especially with white decals ie Winfield Nissan, then water slide are the way to go and you dont get those "ridges". I would like to know if anyone received water slide decals for their Nissan without the red showing through.
I will be in touch soon for my set of B & H decals. It appears the black on yellow works ok in this instance.

I liked my Camel FIlter vinyls and also WInfield VInyls (because the waterslides ones were CRAP!!! yes the red shwoed through) so I do like vinyls up until I used berts waterlsides for the B&H Sierra - they are great. I also used waterslides for the 99 Wynns conversion which also look great!
I think I am converted to liking waterslides better, easier to apply than the vinyls because you can 'slide' them around until you get it just right ;)
Bert if you get the same quality I would say stick to them. I have not used the Harvey decals (don't have that car) but I would imagine trying to mould the vinyl over the wheel arch would have been a pain, at least with waterslides it should be easier using a bit of decal softener.

I agree with you, most of my experience has been with waterslide decals. The first vinyl decals I put on were the Harvey torana whish I had no problems with.
The smaller scale cars would need to be water slide due to the scale that you are working with.
I have waterslide decals on my Winfield GTR and they look fine.
Can the 1/18th scale decals be made in both waterslide and Vinyl?
It is up to personal choice.;)

i prefer vinyll, but then again i only collect 1:18 so the size is easier to work with.

I prefer vinyl. I think the letters are sharper and crisper in vinyl compared to waterslide, and there's also less chance of the underlying colour showing through. Once you've done it a few times, vinyl letters are not difficult to put on.

Depends, on a car itself. Although, I generally prefer high quality waterslides over vinyl because they are easier to apply over curved areas as well as move around.

I've used vinyl on all moffat and tobacco cars (except the B&H car). I prefer vinyl because of it's durability. I've had no problem with decals on compound curves either.

i preffer vinal on diecast models most of the time. reson being there were a lot of water slide decals that are very thin and the base color bleeds through. but a good quality water slide decal is hard to beat, because there easier to work with. so it really depends on the quality of the decal itself. the longhurst sierra decals are very good and dont bleed through. so if your future water slides are as good as those. the water slide would be fine.

Vinyl is the way to go, the bleeding through of colours on water slide is absolutely correct and with white water slide they also go yellow in time, I have seen both the bleeding through and yellowing first hand.

Hi there...just a quick question...where do you get decal softener from? Asked my local "professional" RC Shop for decal softener and they didn't even know what it is....(although the name gives a pretty strong hint what it is used for:rolleyes: )
cheers Marty

i've been told that electrical tape will lift them right off without damaging the model (just make sure its not too sticky) haven't yet tried it myself, if anyone else has any info this would be greatly appreciated :D

Definately waterslide for me. :D I can generally slide the decals into place where as with the Vinyl its a bit harder as you have to get it right 1st time:)

Hi SmartyMarty
Any decent hobby shop should have decal softner.
Both Testors (Model Master) and Tamiya make it.
Ask for Decalset and they should know what you want .

I do not know who made them as they were in the box when I brought the car.;)

the best way to remove old waterslides wihout damaging the paint under them is to get a couple of tissues or paper towel and soak them with warm water and then lay them over the waterslide, leave them there for an hour or so. after the hour is up you will find that the decal should lift straight off, if it doesnt wrap a peice of masking tape around your hand sticky side out and roll your hand over the decal and it will take them away, if some of the decal still remains add some vinegar to the warm water and soak the decal again.
i have used this process for over 18 years now and have never damaged a model in all that time.

Well done pedro, they must be very good quality. The decals I used initially were pretty ordinary. Thats why I went for vinyl. I got mine through my dealer. He has a graphic artist come into his shop and they were made up professionally. I have a photo on my site if you havent all ready seen it.

Just be aware that barcodes and the like on Minichamps Freezerwheels etc, can also be tampo printed and a different technique should be used , nailvarnish remover ,and very much carefullness

i prefer the cut vinal on the ciggy sponserd models as the letters look more individual. rather than having that printed on a bill board look. just my preff on diecast but for plastic kits water slide all the way.:D
