View Full Version : How did you start your model collection?

I started collecting (becoming addicted) model cars over 40 years ago. It started when I was given my first Matchbox car (and yes I can remember that fateful day very clearly) and grew with the addition of more Matchbox, Corgi, Micro Models, Dinky, Boomaroo and Wyn Toys.

20 years ago, I sold most of my collection when I decided to get married, get a mortgage and have children. Then approximately 16 years ago, I decided to recommence collecting.

I buy models that appeal to me. I have a lot of Matchbox, Corgi, Micro Models, Dinky, Boomaroo, Wyn Toys, Scalextric and Tamiya RC cars. I have approximately 80% of the models issued by Biante, 80% of the models issued by CC and 90% of the models issued by Trax.

I don’t want this thread to become a forum regarding quality or lack of, rather how people started their collections and what prompted their decision to become involved with this hobby/addiction.

Over to you.

Was surfing the Web one night & came across www.topgear.com. Trax, of course. Got egged into buying an A9X Torana by wifey & it's just gone from there.
As a kid had lots of Matchbox, a huge HO Train-set & stacks of model Aircraft - kits, mostly Australian variations on '39 - '80's aircraft. So the gene was well & truly there.

Bugger that 2 minute rule. That should've been www.topgear.com.au of course. I'm not trying to advertise Trax, just thought that I should be accurate!:D

went to Toyworld with mum, discovered a red Bburago Dodge Viper RT/10, fell in love with it and mummy bought it for me - I was 12 years old and had just started seventh grade.

I started collecting them about a year ago when my dad bought me the 1:18th model of possum bourne's saxon safari subaru. Most of my models are matchbox ones at the moment but i have ordered the 1:64th model of peter brock bathurst 1000 car. I hope to be able to purchase many more models in the near future.

I went to Bathurst in 1999 for the HQ Nationals and while I was there I found a stall at the track that had set of Trax 1977 Moffat/Bond Bathurst winners, $65.00 from memory.

This was a significant car for me as Moffat Fan and the fact that the car I sold when I got married was an XA two door that had been painted the same as the 77 Winner and fitted with BBS Wheels and big US Goodyear's etc etc. A Road going replica.

My wife had agreed that one day when we could afford it I could have another one (would have been better off keeping the car)

This model was the first step towards getting the car back. While I was there I found a 1971 XW 65E 1:18, It was a bit expensive at $195.00 (should have got 6) but hey my first car was an XY so I had to have it.

July 2004 and I now own every 1:18 and 1:43 Australian Touring Car Model from Biante and CC's I have a room to full of Glass cabinets and Mirrors to show them off and have spent thousands.

I should have just bought a Two Door Falcon.

Still I could always sell them???????????

Or sell the Wife

I started about 7 years ago after admiring models through the shop windows for many months and then saw the first model I just had to have and bought which was a custom '57 chevy with working lights(Dash , tail & headlamps), moving engine with grunty engine sound and working horn made by ertl.

This was the start of a small collection I accumulated over the next 2 years , then in aprox. 1999 I sold them all except the '57 chevy as I just couldn't part with it .
Then in late 2000 I started collecting again after regreting selling my previous models , origanally buying american muscle cars and european sports cars made by ertl , burago , hot wheels , maisto , Ut models etc .

Then I discovered the Biante models were well worth the extra bucks so I started buying those and Just fell in love with the quality detail that the other brands lacked . Then of course classic carlectables came along , so by this time my collection had grown considerably and I was well and truly hooked on the hobby and as the detail of these models increased so did my interest and purchases .

Now my main focus is on Aussie road and race cars From the classic road and touring cars to the late model road and V8 supercars made from Biante and Classic carlectables , I now have Just over 200 models in my collection and about 85% are 1/18 scale .
I enjoy my collection considerably and also like researching new purchases and tracking down wanted models to add to my collection and would now never consider selling them , so it really is amazing what can eventuate from your first model purchase .

Cheers

I don't think we should discount any particular brand of model. I started with Matchbox & continued my collection until they were taken over by Tyco, a multinational with no eye for anything other than the almighty $.

With regard to storage of my collection, I like to display them all so I have 8 mirrored display cabinets in the house and an ex shop display cabinet plus several other cabinets in my shed, then I have even more models not on display stored in the roof space.

It sure is an addiction

I remember seeing a few of the Biante type models back home in NZ, couldn't afford them back then, would loved to have had at least one, but got married and had first child and didn't really think about it for a while. Watch the V8's on telly religiously.

Then got posted here in Aus with work and saw the Murph 2002 1:18 car in the HRT shop in Parramatta back in 2003, Feb I think, went back a couple of times, took son (2yrold then) and he "talked" me into buying it - well thats what I told the wife:p (and myself!) Plus I was now earning Aussie dollars, bit better than the Kiwi was back then, ha ha.

Joined the forum straight after (same day as I bought Murph 1:18) when I saw the web site addy on the bottom of the Murph box, haven't looked back since then - so I actually blame Admin for my addiction:eek:

Now I have a huge cabinet bursting at the seams, plus another son to buy models for.

Love it!
Cheers

I got a 1/18 Coulthard McLAren cheap in 1999 I think and never thought a lot more about die cast cars as I was a kit builder.
I then saw the Brock 28c car in a shop window and that was the end of it for me. My hobby really grew legs once I had to stop building my own model kits and it now pretty much runs my life!

Walked in a gift shop in January 04, saw the 1:18 Brock First Bathurst Monaro, the wife talked me into buying it, then the shop guy talked me into a Brock 28C Torana.
Then in Feb got connected to the intanet at home found the Biante site and E-bay and have been spending ever since.
Was only going to collect Brock cars and Holdens that have won Bathurst.
However now about 6 months later I've got over 20 1:18 cars including 7 Bathurst winners (69 Bond Monaro, 76 Torana, 96 & 2000 to 2003 incl Commodores), a CC Red VU Ute and CC Sandman, 03 Historic Monaro, Possum Bourne Commerative Subaru, Autoart Tommi Makinen 99 WRC Lancer a Devil Yellow CV8 Monaro, a yellow 2004 Pontiac GTO. and my only Ford the CC Norm Beechey 65 Mustang.

And the girlfriend just keeps saying when she catches me checking out sales on e-bay "if you like it - buy it"

Started collecting Dinkys in the 80's but lost interest when they started continuosly releasing same model just in different colours, still got them, now they are all pcked away as I do not have the room to display them.

Changed over to Trax in the early 90's still collect them but not as many as I use to since the intervention of Biante and CC, got about 140 trax models.

At the same had also started acquiring a few 1/18 scale Bburago's which lead me into a model shop in mid 1998 when the owner gave me a pamplett about a company in Perth that was going to produce a 1/18 scale red XYGT and if I was interested, I remember him saying it's a bit expensive at $125 but there is no obligation if dont like you dont have to buy it.So I was fortunate to get into Biante from the beginning, although I have passed up the offer on cars that later have become desirable. I have no real theme just buy what I like and have more Fords than Holdens.

Got close to 400 models now of which 40 are Biante 1/18, just collected the historic XY today another great model smuggled it home when the wife was not around and in a couple of days time I will discreetly place in the cabinet and she will never know.

cheers Chris

Had never even thought about collecting model cars (and my wife said it was for "sad b******* only"), but was told by an Aussie mate that "some mob called Biante" were making a model of the XC Cobra. I had only had my Cobra for a year and was very excited to get a model as well. Was so impressed by the quality that I bought the Moffat Cobra, then a mate bought the Federation XC.........I have no idea how many I have now, but as well as numerous Falcon hardtops and V8 Toranas I have Sports Racing, Rally and Touring cars, mostly in 1:18, but increasingly 1:43 as well.........and my wife now thinks I'm a sad b******.

In 1955 on the way to the hospital, I must have needed a transfusion, The staff used the wrong jerrycan ,which contained avgas instead of blood, had foodpoisening, and hallucinations of staggering stallions, and bellowing V8 engines, but luckily, was resurrected in the flat out V8 Chev ambulance , and the sideeffects have never dissapated,Ahhh well such is my lot in life, I have learned to live with it:eek:

Hi Rover,
you must be getting very good at smuggling your prizes past your missus after so many models in your collection. Which model shop did you get the pamphlett from. My guess is Formula One Models on the Norwood Parade? There the ones that got me into collecting when they were in the Myer Centre.

Hello BB

It was Kent from Mortuary Collectables in Tanunda who showed me the light.

The wife does not really take a great interest in them, she just take the occasional notice of whats in the cabinets and grumbles a bit, and in between grumbles naturally the number of models have increased so it's worth getting the ears chewd a bit and most importantly she does not know what they cost.

When I am really in deep sh** she gets stuck into me about the 1 to 1 scale models I've ( Now they are very hard to hide ) got "Why do have so many cars you can not drive then all " it might be true but that's irrelevant to me.

cheers Chris

My mum bribed me when I was little that if I was good when we went shopping she'd buy me a toy car.

Well, you can imagine, every week for about 3 or 4 years I got a matchbox or hotwheels car, and prolly got more for birthdays etc.

Anyway, kept collecting them when I started getting pocket money etc, but they were mainly used for competitions in the backyard which involved high speed crashes and being buried in sand etc...so not too many of them are in good nick at the moment.

I bought a couple of Burago 1:18's and a few 1:24's that I liked over the years, but really wanted to get some Aussie cars as the American ones didn't really interest me anymore.

One day, flicking through a magazine, and I saw an ad for trax, so I rang them and asked them to send a catalogue.

Collected a few of them, well, quite a lot actually, and then one day saw the brochure for the March 17th Green XU1...

I had to have it, since then its been pretty much all Biante, autoart and Minichamps....

btw, I know its off topic, but I still call my wife my girlfriend too...:D

Mine's been mentioned on a previous thread, but quickly it was the awesome looking (IMO) 2002 Holden Young Lions car that started my collection off.

I had, up until buying that car, been able to avoid getting started on collecting, because I knew that once I had begun I would not be able to stop!!

Combination of walking past Triking on the way to work most mornings, a visit to Biante HQ on non-model related business and the first issue of Diecast Downunder mag that led to me taking the plunge, and my Visa card and bank balance have been suffering ever since...

Salutations to all - first posting. Started collecting Matchbox in early 50's as a wee tacker. Had a collection of 300 mint/boxed cars that mum said to give away and I did (1976).
Married early 1986 and one day while wife and I were toy shopping - she fell in love with a Matchbox (yesteryear) and started collecting. Went on a 6 week honeymoon drive and collected as many older models as possible. Got sick for a while and stopped collecting them. Started collecting Trax in 1987. Have every colour variation of the first 60 models - stopped collecting when wife sick - open to offers for the set. Figured that if I was going to collect them then I might as well get in at the basement. No collecting for several years until I found out by accident that we had a model shop in town (Darwin NT). Walked into the shop in May 2003 and thought I had died and gone to heaven. I now only collect one of every colour / model variation of the Biante 1:64 -Ford / Holden and hopefully Chrysler Chargers in the future. I look at it in that I can collect 10 1:64's for the price of a 1:18. Considering what I saw on the web site as coming up or under devolopement I guess I will have to try to work more to pay for it all. I just love the memories they bring back

I started out young as well, moving from Matchbox, Corgi and Hot Wheels cars to the Burago 1:43 series from the late 80's onwards until getting into the 'serious' models.

I suppose I started as a kid. Unlike other kids at the time, I never threw my ‘matchbox’ type cars away or handed them on once I’d out-grown playing with them in the sand pit. I kept them all, and still have them (no boxes tho…)

Then, while still at high school, I started building Tamiya’s 1:20 GP kits and wanted to have the ‘complete’ collection (something I’m STILL working on!). I also regularly visited the hobby shops whenever we visited Melbourne and when Onyx first produced their 1:43 F1 cars of 1988, I drooled. I purchased a number of these for a year or two, plus a few other 1:43 F1 cars I stumbled across in those years (side issue: many of these models had ciggie ads but, despite being an impressionable young lad, the Marlboro and Camel decals didn’t make me take up smoking…).

I stopped collecting for quite a number of years because I needed every cent I could earn to go towards my own racing career.

During this time I still kept a close and envious eye on the hobby. Minichamps appeared on the scene and they, along with Onyx, were producing more and more F1 stuff. There were also Indycars and sports-prototypes and I couldn’t work out why someone didn’t do Falcon/Commodore V8s – one casting could be used to pump out heaps of variations. Of course, then CC kicked off with the Brock cars etc.

About 1996 I started buying a couple of pieces again and within a year or so the ‘collecting disease’ had gained momentum. Consequently, I have a 1:43 model of every F1 car that has raced since 1996 (well, that’s not exactly true because Mattel didn’t bother doing the 2002 Jaguar and Minichamps STILL haven’t done the 2002 BAR – I might have to look at the kit market for these models).

I’ve also hunted down most of the missing pre-1996 models and have various themes to the collection – Formula 1, Aussie race cars (including Bathurst winners), LeMans winners (and other interesting sportscars I like), Indianapolis cars, NASCAR, Aussie road cars plus a few bikes and other odd or interesting bits.

There’s now over 800 models in the collection (85% is 1:43 scale) and about 70% is on display in cabinets.

The off-topic bit:

I now consider myself an ‘experienced collector’ and can tell you this:

• I am not brand-loyal: if there’s a model of a car I want, I’ll buy it regardless of which company makes it.
• I am not a fan of ‘commemorative’ specials: I collect models, not special packaging or fancy gimmicks!
• On the second hand market, ‘mint-boxed’ rarely is.
• Dollar wise, my collection is worthless. Apart from accidental ‘double-ups’, it is not for sale.
• I am not scared to modify a model. The appearance and realism of some models (especially the earlier releases) can be dramatically improved with a bit of detailing work and a rebuild.
• Models of back-marker teams and drivers are just as interesting (sometimes more so) than the more popular front -runners.
• None of my collection themes are ‘complete’

Cheers,
MW

With all us noobies around who just hate a chat we could add a few stories.

Got my first car, a trax XT falcon about 20 years ago, still got it, then nothing for about another 18 1/2 years ;), then about a year and a half ago saw a couple of Johnson 1:43's at a swap meet, thought they look alright, now i've got no pool, driveway or cubboard space but I do have a hell of a lot of little cars, lurve them all.

I got into the addictive hobby of collecting about 1.5 years ago. I said to myself that I would stick to a theme "Bathurst Winners", but oh no! I couldn't resist, especially with all the Brock models and now the VK Group A's and 3's.

I first started collecting Howheels cars when I was about 3 years old. Then, back when I was about 5 years old, my dad brought me back a 1:43 1998 Skaife/Lowndes Bathurst car from Bathurst which was my first diecast model. After that, I started buying cheaper priced exotic supercars such as Ferrari's, Lamborghinis and some prototype supercars. Then, at the start of this year, I started buying Biante, CC and Auto Art models and so far I have bought in 1:18, an 07 Skaife VE, and 08 Skaife VE, a VL Walkinshaw and a brock 1997 VS. In 1:43, I have bought a 1992 Bathurst winning skyline and in 1:64, a Brock A9X Bathurst winner and a 1990 VL Bathurst winner.

Five thumbs on each hand eh?

Apart from the usual matchbox's as a kid and cheapo Bburago exotics as a teenager. My wife actually started me off with "real" die casts when she got me a 1:18 Brock VR. Since then its Brock, Brock and of course, more Brock. All scales, all types.

I wonder if she regrets that purchase.

Like most of us I had toys cars but being the early 80's there were none of my favourite cars - Australian Touring cars!

That changed when my Dad bought two of the pull back Peter Brock HDT Commodores (everyone would know the ones I am talking about - made by Ertil I think).

Being quite the model kit maker he painted one up as my favourite car - Johnson's Greens Tuf Mustang and the other for my brother as the Richards JPS BMW, both with the signwriting etc. We loved those cars and the collecting bug was planted.

Still remember so clearly being 6 years old watching my first Bathurst (1985) and after the Saturday Hardies Heroes my Dad painted the wheels white on my "Mustang" overnight so that it matched the car for race day which I then ran around the lounge room all day as the race went on, with Dad's code 3 JRA Jag on the top of the television, having told me that it would be the winning car :)

After that he made some Sierras and even an EB falcon from a Thunderbird Nascar for me which I still have. Then the CC black window cars started to appear and by the the time Biante started making the DJ collection and Supercars, it was like my dreams had been answered. Have not looked back since :D

I walked passed a model shop up near Central station one day in 1984 (its gone now) & went inside & had a look & thought "a couple of these would be cool" So I bought a 1/18 Bburago Ferrari Testarossa. Then saw Matchbox Yesteryear T model vans & trucks & thought " a few of those would be cool" then I became a Fireman & thought " a bunch of Fire Engines would look good ". Then I saw a Trax FJ ute, XY race car, etc, etc.

Kept thinking, "surely 1/18 Australian models would sell" & then lo & behold, they appeared. Saw my First Biante, 28c, on my honeymoon, in 2000 & thought "a couple of those would be cool"........

PS . My wife thought the model shops of Melbourne to be very romantic spots. Took her to Echuca to make it up to her. "Look honey, a Holden Museum"

My first car which I still have is a very worn gold Porsche 917K! Made by Corgi and that was the car that started it all waaaaaaaaayyyyy back in 1973 :) I have over 630 cars now and growing weekly, I mainly collect racing cars, F1, Rally, Le Mans, Nascar and Aussie V8's. I haven't lost or sold any of them over the years and I probably prize my Corgi JPS Lotus 72D and McLaren M23 of Emmerson Fittipaldi which I got from Santa back in the 70's.

went to Toyworld with mum, discovered a red Bburago Dodge Viper RT/10, fell in love with it and mummy bought it for me - I was 12 years old and had just started seventh grade.

nine years later...

LOL I also started with this car, but it was just before the release of an unknown company called Biante with a Red XYGTHO in 1:18 scale due to come out soon, in 98 a $150 for an sight unseen, "well they gave me a flyer at gamesworld when I put it on order" didnt sit to well with the GF at the time, but little did we know what it would turn into!!! just to think what 1:1 car I would be driving now if I didnt order that silly toy car..............oh well I am sure happy I still have it.

Here Is my 1st car in 1:18 the day I placed the order for the Red XYGTHO.

Interesting threads these old ones. It just shows how many regulars there were a few years ago that have dropped off for one reason or another and great to hear stories from the newer members too. I still reckon there are a lot of diehard collectors out there that check these posts regularly that have never posted.

My 1:18 'addiction' began in 2002 with the release of the 2002 Brock/Baird Bathurst VX Commodore.

From there the collection has grown to 90 odd and continually growing. I now collect Bathurst Winners, Brock cars and ATCC Championship winning cars!! PPHHEEWW!!!

I also have a number of 1:43 such as the Del Prado collections etc.

I am lucky in that wifey fully supports my addiction, and my two young boys enjoy looking at the cars too. Hopefully the models can be used as a bit of a history lesson for my boys in the future.

Who knows where that may lead????

well I'm pretty sure it started like this (since I'm only 11 it started when I was 8) when I was little dad got me matchbox cars and the old 1/64 cc's and I still have most of them. But back to where I was when I got abit older dad started getting the 60's and 70's matchbox cars and one day we went into a model car store and dad said go and pick some nice cars so I went and I picked up some biante 1/64s (79 moffat bathurst 72 moffat bathurst and 76 brock bathurst) and that is how my collection started and now I have about 120 cars

I started giving brock97 quality 1/64 cars from the age of 4. He used them (& then I put them away so now he's still got most of them). As for Matchbox Cars, I retrieved my old matchbox cars (50's, 60's 70's & 80's) from storage where they had been Years and brock97 took an interest so I bought some more.

Well I started off with matchbox/hotwheels cars like most....then proceeded to get cheap $15 1:24 scale cars......then I started to get 1:43 Vanguards models (English company and Corgi models......and cheap 1:18's....ie Sunstar DMC DeLorean out of back to the Future....then I was given my first "proper" 1:18 for my Birthday in December '02....it's a Biante Holden LX Torana SLR 5000 in Mandarin red......

I then moved to QLD....and at a shopping centre 5 mins down the road was a "Lions den store" where I bought my first Biante (first I payed for myself) which was the '99 VT Commodore Police car...followed by Brock's '03 Targa Tasmania car...my first Brock mobile....(I know have all but 2 Brock cars)...

In '05 I changed retailers to my current one, as the Lions Den store was closing.....Currently I have 83 1:18's.....

My first Biante model was the HSV GTS Coupe in Devil Yellow in 2002 which I bought with my first pay check.:D

My first Brock Model was the 2002 targa tasmania monaro. I bought it at Oran Park during the V8's and had Brocky Autograph the Roof and the Box. It is my most treasured of all my models and I would never sell it.

Didn't realise there were model of V8 supercars until I got the free Perkins '96 VS with a bottle of Castrol. Later at a V8 supercars promo day at the kids school I got my first real idea what was available with collectors autioning models and memorbrilia for charity. Got the pair of 2000 Castrol Commodores in 1:18 with both COA's signed plus blockmount for $280. Being a Perkins supporter from way back I have a full range of Larry's cars now except for 2 that I'll have made up (1978 Porsche Le Mans and 2003 #8 VX Paul Dumbrell). Also have a range of street cars, rally cars, trucks and semi trailers. I haven't finished the database for all my collectibles but so far have totalled $10000 in models and still counting.:D
