Maybe Biante can make a feature like the CC Forum (ooh shudder, shudder - only joking;)) where there is a complete member list and individual stats. That way we could collate where we're all from, the posts we've contributed to, and date joined - all at one time. There are over a thousand members joined here, as it states at the homepage, but where have they all gone? In previous polls, we're getting no more than 70 or so responses.

The shop in Liverpool Street - Auto Miniatures. I know John really well, and he looks after me.
Chances are, I have probably seen you in there and never known! Oh, the anonymity of the internet!

I know exactly what you mean. The exigencies of a long term relationship and the changing demands it places on your income mean that there is less and less available funds for diecasts, and at the same time, you are expected to be maturing out of collecting little cars as well....

It's a losing battle...

Welcome!
Your first model car? Whatever takes your fancy! Its a silly thing to say, but the best collecting advice I think, is to just buy what you like, not what you think you should get.

If you like Walkies, then I couldn't think of a better place to start!

Sleepy I've been spending up big lately so I did not have the funds for the A9X. Doubt I'll be able to afford it in the future considering it will skyrocket :(

So are there any get togethers down here? Would love to meet up. I heard there's a new shop opening in Bathurst Street. Is this true?

Jess

Hi Jess,

I haven't heard anything about a new model shop in Launceston, I will have to investigate. I preorder all my models from Birchalls and get great customer service from them. I would try looking there for an A9X when they come out but it is most likely sold out on preorder. But some people tend to not pick them up so you may be lucky.

The annual model fair at the Summerhill Primary School hall is on October 23 I am led to believe, so you may pick up some models you are after there on the secondhand market.

Cheers, Jason :D

Well I'll definately be there, rain, hail or sunshine, and I'll be there this Sunday the 3rd Oct for the second round of the Octagon series,. after all,, it's free entry again,, and if it's a day like the first round a few weeks ago it'll be a rippa.... so you Tassie guys... get along to Symmons Plains... :D

Andrew

I want to go to Symmons for the Friday only, as I want to get Skaife to sign some GT-R stuff I have, but apart from that....

So this model fair that is on - in Launceston I take it?
There appears to be nothing similar going on in the south that I am aware of. There is a Southern Tasmanian Collectors Association I believe, but they seem to incorporate collectors of all things - teddy bears, dolls, diecast, smurfs (!), and a whole host of other things. Not my cup of tea.
And the Collectors' Fair held at the Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) sells nothing that I can't get anyway, as it is the retailers trying to sell their stock that no-one actually wants, because it is all left overs...

*For those interstate, if you have ever seen the Subaru Safari Rally coverage, the DEC is the large strangely-shaped building that sometimes appears in the back of the shot at the superspecial stage by the river. The collectors' fair (as well as concerts and the Rally Superspecial) is held there.

Dopnny I was talking about Baturst Street in Hobart. Apparently the person who owns the shop in Liverspool Street is retiring and thers a new shop opening.

It's true, the Auto Miniatures proprietor is retiring - it was advertised several months ago in the paper, but I have heard nothing about a new store opening in Bathurst Street. If one does open however, I hope it sells a decent range of diecast. If for any reason we only have McCanns Models to deal with in the Hobart CBD, then I may actually walk away from diecast collecting. Their range is poor (they concentrate on so many different things - kits, slot cars, R/C etc.) that they are a proverbial 'jack of all trades and master fo none.' In addition, I find their prices higher than at Liverpool street with less friendly service. We really need a specialist diecast store like Auto Miniatures.

In the greater Hobart area, I have frequented A & R models, but they are prodominantly kits, R/C and railway, and Matt's Hobbies, which is kits with some slot cars.

I have yet to see the place at Sorell. Anyone scoped it out?

andrew, I haven't been to automin for a couple of months, but have often called to enquire about models. Each time, on the other end was an unfamiliar voice - not john's - so I assumed it was taken over by a new owner. Good to know it's still going at the current's helm. Nevertheless, he seems a good bloke who's happy to assist his customers, and overall a great shop with a nice range of diecast at reasonable prices. Sad to see its demise when he eventually retires, AND if things stay stagnant - let's hope not. I graduate (finally, phew!) at the end of the year and will be looking for work in this big scary world of ours - maybe I could look into purchasing and running the business...20% of everything!!!...but first I'd need a massive loan on top of my friggen hecs, some business training and the incentive to run it. In other words, it'll never happen lol. At least not in the near future...

I spoke to a guy in McCanns and he stated they don't distribute Biante products anymore...sad. Funny, when you mentioned 'less friendly service', this was the very reason I never bothered to check this place out when pursuing the Walkinshaw (I keep bringing this up again and again huh ) only to walk in there one day and discover two of them stacked high on the shelves.

Nevertheless, I'll be heading back home to the coast unless I can find a job down here in hob, so I guess the two stores mentioned won't influence me much. Then again, the 'specialist' diecast store on the north west is Craig's Models in Devonport - but specialises with Bburago etc only and not much else, last time I checked...looks like online ordering will be the norm from now on.

my big ears last week overheard john at auto mianatures telling a guy it was up for sale and there was a guy that was looking at the figures etc and he might know , next week (this week now) i havent heard of a new shop opening..matts hobbies closed down a month or so ago..and i havent been to sorell to check that 1 out.... where is the summerhills primary school sounds like it might be worth a look...and yes ill be headed to symmons plains but have u checked the prices out its hyper inflation since the last meet in 1999..i wish my wage would go up as sharply as most of the prices do...my advice to all you youngsters out there is to........... stay in school and get a decent job dont enter a trade the money is peanuts....
