I was excited at first to hear the Torana being revived however I think they can do a better job than this...

Lets not get too excited - isn't it just a Vectra hatch with a turbocharged engine, a few cosmetic changes to the body and an interior stolen from a pimp's '72 Statesman.

Considering the platform approach that GM is taking, I reckon you'd be right on the mark...

Doesn't matter how many kilowatts the engine makes - it ain't going to be a classic in the A9X mould, no matter how much Holden try to talk it up.

With a twin-turbo six they are certainly not.

I actually think it looks great.

Take an Electric Blue paint job and i think it looks hot.

Well done Holden.

Do you mean the Sydney Motor Show???

That looks sh!t....

Don't like the front at all...and the back straight on looks crap too...

I don't think it is worthy of the torana badge to be honest...

I mean, at least drop a V8 in it, otherwise you may as well call it a V6 Astra....

I might be being a bit harsh, but I seriously don't like it....

It's always a cynical marketing move when a manufacturer resurrects a legendary name for one of their new cars. Ford's GT seems to have just got away with it though!

With a twin turbo Alloytec motor that puts out 280 kW, 480Nm...It will fly...

Check this (http://www.media.holden.com.au/division/holden/04 sydney/index.htm) link for the details, including a comparison with the A9X...

The problem is, that they stopped using the name, had they continued, this is what it probably would've looked like...what most traditionalists want is what we have missed...This is the case with the Monaro...

...and for those comparing with the Vectra, how many rear drive Vectra's are there?

Cheers

One so far....they're calling it a torana....:D

I'm sure it will fly, but it doesn't look like a torana to me...

Hopefully they'll do something with the body to make it look a bit better...

The general shape is pretty good, but the front headlights and the rear from straight on are plain ugly!!

It says on that its not for production but then neither was the monaro concept car and look what happened with that!!!

I was just wondering, if they do produce it, do you think it will be available with a hatch hutch?

A sure sign of desperation and panic at Fishermans Bend.

Does a UC look like a LJ or HB?

Does a BA look like a XP or XM?

Why does it have to look like what YOU want?

As it says, a two door large car was tagged by media and public as a Commodore...

A medium rear wheel drive hatchback would have been called a Torana, just because Holden beat the media and public to the punch, the traditionalists go haywire...

Biante1478, don't know where that came from. This concept has been around for 4-5 years. If you call that panic...well...

yeah, the idea has been around for 4 or 5 years. My guess is more that they have produced a car with the possibility of a new torana in mind.

Why else do they build concept cars other than to see the public's reaction to various parts of it?

Either way, its good to see a new car with the torana badge on it, even if IMO it doesn't quite look right...

Leigh, you're right that the different models of old Toranas looked very different, but like the Ford Escort (and it continued in the UK from the Mk 1 right up until the Focus superseded it in the 90s), it was at least a continuous name, despite the body changes. After such a long time it does smack of trying to resurrect past glories when the name suddenly reappears on a car, when management had deemed the name to be old hat years before! Maybe I'm more cynical than I should be......

Alternatively, Holden dropped the names Monaro and Torana because they were seen to be hoon cars at a time that they were after the family market...now those hoons have grown up, have families and want there old cars in modern styles...

Old car in modern style, I would rather the old car with modern assembly

That is an idea that has crossed my nind a few times and I might have even sugested this in an earlier discussion,
Imagine anFord Coupe body from the 1970's with modern running gear in it, or a A9X in the same form or a 2 door Monaro?
The babyboomers and even the youngers generation would warm to this.
In the States Nissan refurbishes Z240 cars and there is a huge waiting list so I am told.

I'd be interested to see how Holden hobbled this setup!! F4000 will run the new 3.6 litre motors in normally aspriated form (i.e. non turbo) next year. Tests so far have indicated 300bhp as a starting point with only basically mandrel bent extractors so a twin-turbo at 280kw in the new Torana is a bit of a joke given the potential F4000 has shown. Then again, maybe there's scope to go nuts with turbocharging and the figure has been kept low to avoid uneccessary exposure to the numpty legislators out there.

BTW: I'd expect some outright lap records to tumble next year in F4000 with the extra grunt and at least 20kg less weight (engine alone).

is there that much difference between the concept torrana, and last year's SX (SSX?)? Apart from a diff. engine, lights, and paintwork, that is

chups
10-10-2004, 03:06 PM
the whole front end is different, the rear is different, interior is different, and i think its even smaller than the SSX (judging by where the engine sits)
the only things i can see that are the same is the fact that its a 4 door hatch, and that it has the same styled rear window pillar

either way, id love to see both produced

Not holding my breath :(
That would be awesome if holden, ford, valient or camaro etc went through with that. Soon to get my L's i would be a subscriber to the 70's mode of transport for sure

Go and have a look at a current model Commodore and Vectra...

The SSX is based on a Commodore (so a large car)

The Torana is Vectra sized (so a medium car)...

I'd call that a significant difference!!!

Revolution...I had the same thought, although the F4000 motor would have signifacantly different internals.

I suspect that the Torana has twin turbos fitted more for show. The question is, just how much boost is dialled in? Crank it up to 20psi boost with decent intercooler and I reckon you'd get a pretty good read-out. How drivable that combo would be is another question...
