On my recent trip I noticed two new display cabinets (about 400x400x 1600) with a small frame, glass sides and doors all around, including 4 glass shelfs. Two 18 scale cars could easly fit side by side on a shelf. It didn't look too difficult to add more shelfs to the cabinets. The names and prices:

DETOLF $198
INGO $199

They both look quite good, I am planning to get at least one, maybe two for my models.
The only must do is to seal up the gap around the doors, as dust could easly get in.

They are good and Ikea had a smaller model in yellow that was a wall hanger but have been discontinued
I am building some display cabinets at the moment and will try to post pics on this forum if wanted. one is 4200by 2140by350 other is 2000by 2140by 350 for starters.;)

FerrariFan,

Post your pictures when they are ready.

It gives everyone more information and ideas of what sort of cabinets to buy or build.

I have pics and info on my cabinet that was custome made here (http://www21.brinkster.com/cambo/christalCottage. asp?group=christalCottage&page=2). The most expensive part was the glass for the doors, sides and shelves. The mirror was not that expensive and I would not do without it.
It makes it easier to see the back of the cars. Only thing I wish I did was add a light. Might add one at a later date.

I've got the IKEA cabinets for displaying mineral specimens, and even with dustproofing the doors, after a while a layer of dust gets everywhere. I'd rather rub a dust cloth over a rock than one of my models, so I've still got mine in boxes until I've found a solution. I'm sure there must be cabinets available from commercial suppliers that are 100% dust proof.

Hati

I have the cabinet you are describing, I replaced the wodden backboard with a mirror and added a few more shelves, 2 cars pre shelf look good, 3 will fit but it is fairly cramped, i have not sealed the sides but have not experianced any real dust problems.

here is a link for a look

Sounds good fomoco, I was thinking of something like that myself. The other idea I was playing with using one of the ikea lights to light up the shelfs. One up top on in the base. How much light do you get 2-3 shelfs from the light source?

I recently purchased a unit from IKEA for $268.00.

It's the "BILLY" bookcase in white for $99.00 plus the clear glass twin door set for $169.00.
The unit measures 202cm tall by 28cm deep and 80cm wide, and features six shelf levels with the option of more.
Additional shelves in white are $20.00 each or glass at $15.00 each.

I'm assembling it this weekend ....yet to see how dustproof it will be.

On a trip to Ikea last week I picked up the Vinninga coffee table. It has a glass top and has a large drawer underneath to hold models. As you can see from the pic it is quite large and holds the Autoart 1:12 Mercedes CLK GTR comfortably (I did have 17 1:18 F1 cars in there with room to spare). It is totally enclosed so dust isn't a problem either.

It is worth a look as it brings your models off the wall and into the centre of the room for something different.

Not cheap but neither are cabinets.

My next purchase will be a Billy cabinet combination. I'll post some pics when it is done.

Hey nice display case Cameron your dads pretty handy. I too am remaking a case similer to yours only it doesn't have the drawers (might think about adding them though). The cabinet I purchased from a friend but it didn't match the furniture in the house (wifes problem) so I am in the process of remaking it in pine so it blends in. I'll post some pictures when it's finished.

Richard you are a champ.

The Mrs has been crying about a new coffee table for months.

Thanks to your post I have a reason to go and buy her a coffee table now.

Just got off the phone to her and she is happy we are getting a new coffee table but is wondering why I called out of the blue about buying her one.

:D

Just wonder how the DJR Collection would look in the table.
Hmmmmmmmm

Hi Martin,

If you put drawers in make sure they are big enough for some boxes. One drawer fits 2 1:18 boxes and the other drawer holds my 1:43 boxes. It might even be better to do one big drawer on the bottom to give you a little more space.

Look forward to some pics - email me some when you get them, would be keen to see the finished product.

Good one mustang!!! Post some pics when you get it :D

Cheers.

Biante keeps making too many good models so I had to make the treck (4 hours) to the nearest Ikea a few weeks ago to get another cabinet. I haven't put it up yet but I will get to it soon, that makes 3 wall cabinets and 2 stand alone ones. I need a bigger house - but that would require selling the biantes and that aint happening. Will keep you posted with pics when I get it all done.

Cameron,

Well I dragged the Mrs down yesterday afternoon to the Blacktown store. I liked what I saw but then the thumb came down. The Boss did not like it. So as you may have gathered we did not end up buying one.

I liked them and I think for the price of a coffee table the $295 they are asking is quite good. I liked the idea of having this in the middle of the lounge room. It looked great for when people visit, and I think great for a model collector with an understanding Mrs.

We looked at a few shops and MY Visa was not used as we did not buy any coffee tables.

Will have to keep looking for a good cabinet.

Cheers
Mark

Well I finally got to putting the new display cabinet up. They now take one wall in my dinning room. I get to look at them and eat dinner every night.

I threw some models in and took a few snaps for anyone that is interested. Sorry they are a bit grainy, will try for some more in daylight.

Morton,

Check theis thread out (1:18 Equipment (http://turing.ibc.com.au/bianteforums/showthread. php?s=&threadid=544)) for more info and a few more images.

Basically they were all purchased from ebay. I got 4 packages in total from 2 manufacturers. Sit back and don't rush in and you should get them under retail.

Last May when we had the ModelAutoExpo here in Perth ,
RallyLarry had a Big display of DJR in 1/18 workshop with even a panel and spraydivision .
Has anybody here in Perth any pics of this winning display?
It also was at the modelshow in Malaga.

Zorak, great pictures of a great display.

Most of my cars are sitting around in piles in their boxes which looks messy, and defeats the purpose of having them (they aren't to be sold so Mint In Box means very little to me, even though they are currently in that condition).

I have tried displaying some of my cars in the old 50's-60's china display cabinets, which, while not ideal, gets the job done, and keeps the dust out. It has a shocking white base, and solid sides and top (needs a light or two), but has a glass shelf, glass sliding doors (on which I have placed locks - $10 from the hardware store), and a mirror back. It holds about 6-7 1:18 on each shelf (any where from 12 to 14). These are able to be bought from most second-hand shops for about $40-$50 or thereabouts. Any more and you are getting ripped off.
I also have a more specialised display case that I was lucky enough to obtain from a little old woman who was closing down her craft shop (a dream situation, if a little opportunistic). It is white, made of timber (painted), has glass sides, glass shelf, sliding glass doors (again with lock), and mirror back. It holds 6 1:18 on each shelf (12 in all, rather tight), but it was a bargain for $50! If I had a pic or two I would post it, but I haven't. Needless to say I am very happy with it all. But I need another five or six cabinets the same, and then there are the 1:43 cars!

Having spent so much on model cars, I feel reluctant to spend large wads of cash on display cases (my rationale being that I could buy another 2-3 cars for the same price as a good case). And that seems to be the paradox for me. I'll buy the cars, but won't go the extra bit to spend the money to display the things and do them justice. oh well....

Hi Andrew, I am originally from Hobart myself.

I can't handle having the cars and not having them on display. I started collecting after I was given a 1:18 bburago as a gift. I moved onto NASCAR diecast cars but then I found Biante and they HAVE to be displayed.

All our display cases are from Ikea and fairly inexpensive. We are in a reasonably small house so room is an issue and I think this last addition is going to be the last one until we move.

That means I can display all my Biantes (to date plus a few more releases) including a "Featured Model" which gets its own shelf in one of the smaller cabinets and is placed on a turntable. My kids love that concept, especially my 2 year old who knows to only "touch with his eyes"!

Better start looking for a bigger house next.

Andrew

The thing about Ikea is (I'm sure you know this Zorak), that here in balmy Tasmania there are no stores (to my knowledge). So I do not have the same opportunity to check the product out before I buy - size, style, cost etc. which is a must for me. So I am stuck with finding what I can in cabinets. I think my next trip to Sydney will include an Ikea visit though...

If you change your display around markedly can you attach some new pics Zorak?

I have just scored a Swarowski display sales cabinet out of a closed down jewerly shop wich is 1900 high 1350 roundwide, all glass with 5 shelves glass rotating and lighting in the top ,well made timber and would cost a bucket to construct new, for a song and would take aprox 50 cars turning around!
thisn one will have most of my 1/18 ferrari F1 models in it. pick it up on thursday and cannot wait to put them in! :D

ZORAK
01-10-2002, 02:08 PM
Andrew I know poor old Tassie misses out often. My local Ikea is a 4 hour drive so we don't get there that often.

I will be getting a new shipment of Biantes in about a month so don't hold your breath!

when we moved into our new house we bought a 7 piece dinning suit with a big solid table, am looking at making it into a display unit like the coffee only bigger (no room for a coffee table, loungeroom to small) so i can look while i eat. just gotta convince the boss.

I couldn't find the "IVAR" range online either so I am not sure if they stock them. You may want to call and ask. They are the 'lower end' units but they look fantastic. I get 1 IVAR case and 1 BILLY shelf pack (contains 2 additional glass shelves) and they are perfect for wall mounting.
