I very much like the plain blue and silver accented XB GT Coupe... I'm not too enamoured with the $200+ price though...

Well we're getting the Johnson XC, but I think the market would bear a few more, especially now our US friends are picking up on the 2 door's charms! The Leonard/Wanless car is striking enough to be popular, as is the '79 Willmington car, but some road versions would sell as well. An all-white 351 XC, or yellow with black bonnet? Perhaps the 1977 homologation "pre-Cobra" cars, with their bonnet scoops and spoilers?

The XA, XB & XC Coupe each have their own unique charms.
The XA with it scoops has a real feel of Muscle.
The XB just looks mean, as though its built to do the business.
The XC Cobra has a very purposeful look however it looks too much like Fords tried to copy the A9X in terms of the Air intake.
If I were forced to choose, my vote would have to go to the XB I've had a Couple & currently own an XB Fairmont GS 302 with genuine 75,000 kms. Hardly run in.
I had an XB similar to FF's which I put a Blueprinted Motor out of a DeTomaso Pantera. 125km in 2nd Gear, though I never had it over 180:)

the xa,xb,xc falcons are probably the easiest australian car for americans to pick out or relate to. i love them all, and im up for all the race versions of each year wow what a collection that would be. but there are four street versions im still waiting on.
a xa superbird prefferably silver with orange stripes.
xb black/silver with front & rear spoilers and globe mags awesome.
mad max xb falcon v8 interceptor
xb john goss special white/green
while im at it the xa foor door big bopper mad max car as well.:D

I never "got" the front end styling of the XB, but love the XC in quad lamp grille form. The bonnet scoop was a 1977 addition to the Falcon, and an engineering response to the need for cool air to the carbies, so I don't see it as copying the Toranas, any more than the blade rear spoiler. In fact, didn't the Falcon have the rear spoiler before the Torana? And when did the Torana bonnet scoops first come out?
So bring on any XC hardtops, with wide alloys under those huge arches, spoilers front and rear, bonnet scoops and all the bells and whistles!

OK, I'm answering my own question here, but Ford homologated the bonnet scoop immediately after Sandown 1977, where they had raced the A9X, which already had one. So Ford clearly "borrowed" the idea from Holden, but I still find bonnet-scooped XCs meaner-looking than those without!

Nick, you better sit back and keep looking at one for a while....
The styling will grab you, and when it does, you're hooked!
The front end of the XB in GS / GT form, is simply one of the toughest looking front ends ever.
Having grown up with all sorts of Fords, this is without doubt my favourite and there's been nothing since that captures my imagination as much as the XB.
I will certainly agree that the XC 4 round headlight treatment looks the goods as well, but I'd probably argue a bit for preference over the XB.
We'd definately be nit-picking for sure!!
The opening chase scenes in Mad Max, where Max rounds up the Nightrider in the HQ will certainly go some way to prove my point.
I also particularly like the XD Ghia front end with the chrome,
but the car has to have the right ride height, and some decent mags to really grab you by the balls..
Colour tends to accentuate styling as well, if the car is the wrong colour, then it really can look unappealing.
In all honesty, I can probably name a few different models for bits that I really like, but then I'm getting off the subject a little......
I just love my Fords!!
Ed :)
Don't forget the Bond/Hamilton 1978 Bathurst XC Cobra to go with the Moffat/Ickx one.
The Bond/French 1979 XC is the best looking XC I've ever seen (on the Bathurst 79 1hr highlights tape of mine), even though Bondy said it had "No GO in it".

XR8, I've looked and looked, but I'm afraid I can't get on with the wimpy front bumper, the rearward slant and the "chinless" effect of the whole front end........The rest of the car is great and looks awesome in GT form, but then it looks much the same as the XC from there backwards.... I realise these are sacrilegious statements and I don't expect to make any friends, but the appeal of the XB front has always been a mystery to me. I don't doubt for a second that I am out of step with opinion, and that the majority of people go for the XB over any other hardtop! Indeed, I have heard many people say they really don't like the XC front end, so it's obviously horses for courses!
You're right about colour being important - in light colours the XC without dark wheel arch paintouts can look a bit heavy and slab-sided. I saw an immaculate all-white XC hardtop and it looked a bit flabby, like a beached whale! My vote for a model of a road XC hardtop would be white or yellow with black bonnet and paintouts, or all black, plus Option 97 kit..........

I couldn't agree more. I never quite understood what all the fuss was about with the XA- XC Hardtop......... I didn't like them in the 1970's and nothing much has changed today. Give me a 2 door A9X Torana any day.
To use the beach analogy, the Falcon Hardtop is a beached whale - the Torana is the equivalent of an 18 year old in a bikini (minimal bodywork but with bumps and with curves in all the right places !).

Now that wasn't intended as an excuse to diss the hardtop, boys! I love the Falcon, and its size (width and length) is part of the charm, but I prefer it with the wheel arch paintouts to reduce the side height effect. However, I also love the V8 Toranas, so I'm not partisan. To further add to my enemies list, I really can't stand the looks of the GTR XU1 Torana, with its sagging rump and skinny body. As Pruneau said in AMC, he thought it looked all wrong and tried to do something better with the LH. So there!:D

Must agree with you on the XU-1 Nick. It's just a car that never looks quite right to me. My opinion on the hardtop Falcons is the XC Cobra would have to be the best looking of the bunch, very closely followed by the XB Goss special. Did I just write that? I think I need to have a lie down.

I can't split them, I like the XW/XY, XA/XB/XC, XD ESP, EA and the BA XR6/8. The 1990s were ok but the 1970s were the best until the BA XR series came along.

Hey singer
Not trying to shoot down the Falcon, but my brother was in the fantastic situation of buying a '72 Bathurst Special XU-1 off the line. 110kph in 1st gear @ >7000 rpm! Calculated top speed:
20.1mph @ 1000 rpm with 3.36 diff = 140 mph+
We lived in a country town and this car spent most of it's life on the redline

Just to prove all of our tastes are in different places I think the XU-1 is the best looking muscle car to come from Oz. I like it being small but very agressive. And I just love the blackouts on it. And a cammy six...yes please.
But I also like the big Ford coupes a lot. Of the XA, XB, XC for me its a toss-up between XA/XB which I like for different reasons..the XB is tough and the XA softer but somehow appealing to me. I find the XC nose too plain. Only GT's of course, they look a bit bloated in standard trim.

My absolute fav. Aussie car is the LJ XU-1, March 17 Green. Closely followed by the LC, a toss-up with any A9-X.
THEN comes the XC Cobra. All the rest are also-rans.:)
Just my humble opinion.:D

have to admit im a torana fan but the xa xb xc 2 doors do look tough with a decent set of wheels under them in standard form they left a little bit to desire..

....like a hippo in ballet slippers?
Put at least 8 inch wheels, and preferably 10 inch or more, and those big arches do look better filled.
The Moffat XC from the '79 Bathurst is arguably (and it will cause arguments, I'm sure!) the best-looking hardtop, but there are quite a few contenders.

I know it is all in gest and some like the daughter,others will preference the mother, and some will even rather talk to the grandmother, but ;
A half decent restored and nicely painted Coupe will have more apreciating looks than a XU1 GTR Tornado or even a modern Monaro, these coupe's do have a presence on the road that is only matched by a FERRARI, but these (FERRARI's) only cause envy sadly here in Good old Australia, and are useless even as a weekend vehicle as every dope wants to scare/race/run you of the road, and is stressfull to get out of the garage.

Now it is up and running. I wonder how many good threads died a silent death by accident.
I might look back at some old threads that only had a few replies?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and tastes vary dramatically, but that statement maybe just stretching it a little;)
I like the big old XA/XB/XC coupes, but then again I love the cars from the 60's & 70's as I grew up with them.
My preference though is a low slung HQ 350 GTS. :)

Speaking of Cobras....I happened to see one I think in Devonport Tas about 1979. Not unfortunately up close, but from a distance looked absolutely grouse. It was probably a 'Lookalike'. Had about 10' Aunger Hotwires, full roll cage, long range Alloy tank, all correct spoilers, bonnet scoop & perspex headlight covers. It was painted in what looked like 'Yellow Blaze' with bright red stripes and guard accents. I think the snakes on the front guards had been reproduced in red also. Did not have my camera with me & never saw it again !! PS...Still like my Blue/White one too !!

Visited one of our suppliers yesterday. Started talking cars and he showed me a picture of a car he owned years ago, blue, late XC Fairmont coupe 302 with Globes. He said that he had changed the carpet to blue and the following owner changed from dual to single exhaust.
Father in law had asked if he could borrow my shed to store a car. Turns up last night with the tow truck driver trying to buy it off the f-i-l. Blue Fairmont coupe, square headlights, 302 V8, single exhaust and blue carpet. Same car.
What are the chances of that happening on the same day? Nice car, pretty straight but it really needs some work and $ to get it looking good again.

Yeah I was reading that article today and have to agree that they really were a great looking car. I just had never really noticed before I have to say. Makes me glad to have the Johnson 1979 XC model even more.
The black with gold trim car was fantastic. XCant say the same about its "sister" car - the blue "Phase 5"
The coupe's look great. Can't say the same about the Capri panel van...what a shocker. I am pleased it was crushed

Cant say I am a fan of the XD group C mock up either - Glad CAMS rejected that one! I liked the roof wing though, that was a nice touch but I like my Touring cars to look alot like their road versions.
Interesting comments about the 1982 Johnson car and the moonraker spoiler, wonder if Dick would have done better keeping with the wing and not lowering the car in the 83 and 84 seasons?

I'll see what I can do but just remember that I have other priorities this weekend, such as Clipsal. :D The car has been stored in a shed for the last 5 years without even a cover on it and all the chrome etc has been stripped off since the last owner 'started' a reso on it and then appears to have given up. I was underneath it last night fiddling with a few things and that took me back about 15 years to when I used to own one of the beasts.
I did tell the supplier and now he is thinking of trying to buy it back.

Alot of cars form the 70's are great, the majority of Coupe's from that era are fantastic no matter which make.
And i have to agree with Toad the XA/XB coupe being the better of the 3, i still wouldnt turn an XC down if it were offered to me though. My personal fav of the lot is an XB Landau Coupe, i worked on one yrs ago with a 550bhp 351 in it and 12" rears that would spin on the touch of the throttle:D

XA-XC Hardtops were the best of the 70s muscle cars imo, they look tough and sound awesome. I am also a big fan of 70s Monaros. They look awesome. HQ and HX 2 Doors are da bomb! They are both getting to be quite pricey now actually. Pity I would like to go retrotech on either one but I have to many cars allready. It would also mean less time and money to spend on mods for my baby (04 Monaro). Cant have that!
I am really going to cop it for this but to me the worst car of the 70s is the Torana. I hate these things and you couldnt pay me to be seen in one! Ugly cheap things that remind me of flanelette shirts, VB and winnie blues but you have to respect their racing success especially with the king behind the wheel. The Bathurst A9X results were damn impressive!!! The stuff legends are made off.

Here are some pix of the old beast. I was sorely tempted to ask to keep it but I was swayed by the 302 slusher part. Now I'm on the look out for a 351 manual in need of resto if such a thing still exists. Plus I need room for the Track Red XY GT when it returns from the GT Nationals in Perth. At least I know that where the car has gone to, the guy wants to rebuild it to its former glory.
