I tend to transfer them from the box right to the display case.

I have to keep adding them to the pile at the moment. I've got plans for some cabinets so just need to get organised and make them.

I imagine many of us have plans for cabinets (while the boxes pile up) so any hints and tips would be very welcome, Richard!

Nick, I have one tip for planning a cabinet - plan for the collection you want, not the collection you've got :D

My cabinet space will be about twice what I have already! There are a lot more models yet to be made that have my name on them. Apart from the ones I miss because I don't notice they've been released, of course..........

No special hints or tips that I know of. I'm looking at basic book case style cabinets with sliding glass doors. 1800mm * 1000mm * 400mm. 1 fixed wood shelf in the centre with 4 or 5 glass shelves in each section (spaced evenly). Should hold 6 cars per shelf comfortably, 7 at a squeeze. Max of 70 cars per cabinet and I'm going to build 3 of them. I've got around 185 cars at the moment but would only display about 150 or so. I'll leave most of the road cars in their boxes. 3 cabinets should have me covered for a while.

My friends and I are fairly handy with tools so we're going to have a go at building them ourselves. We've priced up the MDF from Bunnings and my friend reckons it should only be just over $200 in materials for all three cabinets. Then I have to organise the gla$$. Not sure about mirrors for the back or lighting yet.

The next problem is to find somewhere to put the boxes. I thought of putting them in the roof but not sure how they handle the heat and humidity. Has anyone had any problems with boxes in the roof?.

I will have to wait for the house to be completed before I can display my collection...

For now they get admired and then retired to the cupboard...

RIchard - I have quite a few boxes in the roof. THey are packed in some boxes that I got when I bought my house speakers and others are in old boxes I had. I have not checked them, so I hope they aren't too bad from the heat. The rest of my empty boxes are stacked up in the wardrobe... will move to the roof once I get some more boxes.

Also the glass is only expensive once you start getting the edges polished. Maybe if you only get the front edge polished it won't be so bad???

Richard , the mirror backing really adds to the display from a visual point and also enhances lighting , and even if no artificial lights are used it gives the cabinet a much more brighter appearance especially in a well lit room , in my opinion it's definately worth the extra dollars .

Cheers Jim .

Surely no costs is of hinderance to you. You work at BIANTE!! You'd be a millionaire wouldn't you?!!!!

Mine are mostly in display cabinets.

See also the Display Cabinets thread for more ideas on cabinet size/lighting options etc.

Normally display diecast in cabinets I have had made.
At the moment just boxes as we waiting to start building new house.
Cabinets are about the same size as Richard describes,
Will have new and existing cabinets in new house from floor to ceiling on 3 walls in 1 of the rooms in the new house.
Also having shelves put in the wardobe for all my racing book to keep them out of the light.

Richard (and anyone else with boxes in the roof), I found that the glue on almost all of mine had come adrift from heat and humidity. The first one I discovered when I picked it up (it still had a model inside) and the thing fell apart in my hands, pitching the polystyrene box onto the floor, spilling the model out, and not dong it a lot of good......but where else do you put them. that's the trouble?

I have been thinking along the lines of a bookcase with Bunnings glass shelves, but a look at the cost of individual shelves made it very expensive! Instead of sliding doors that let in dust, I have been thinking of a sheet of Perspex screwed into place over strips of felt to keep out the dust. I guess Perspex scratches though.....

I built a display cabinet simalar to the sizes that Richard mentioned.
I currently have 40 x 1:18's 38 X 1:43's and 81 X 1:64's with plenty of room for further models
I dont have any training in the building game,Just your typical home handyman.

Did not need to be a millionaire to cover the cost.

Probably set me back all up $650.00 which included the Timber,
6 glass shelves, 2 Glass sliding doors and fittings, and down lights

1/43's only here, so all of mine go straight onto the shelves. Plenty of room left with my new shelves.

If only I'd been as sensible as you and collected 1:43 from the start I wouldn't have half the problem! Not having seen a collection of 1:43 in a cabinet, does anyone have any photos they can post? I think all the ones I've seen on this forum have been 1:18.

Bloody 1:18's. I have the damn things stacked up in every cupboard all over the place. Refuse to put them on display until I can do it EXACTLY how I want.
Maybe if I backed off actually buying the models for a while I could afford some cabinets.

The problem you have after you've got a cabinet is that it gets full....then you need another one....then that gets full....then you need another one....

This eventually leads to another problem; not where do I put the next model, but where do I put the next cabinet?

My advice would be that if you're going to buy a cabinet, or make one, make sure it's much bigger than your present collection.

One of the laws of model collecting should be.....Model collections always expand rapidly to fill any available cabinet space.

Nick, I've a couple of pics posted in the "Display Cabinets" thread. If you can't find them I'll post again. Let me know.

You could always give your 1/18's away?:D

yep where do i put the next cabinet is the problem i have.i need to add another rom onto the house or start dicarding useless pieces of furniture, how can i do it without wife noticing..i enjoy building my own cabinets, last 1 i built i used timber from some pallets which had come from some part of the pacific islands possibly fiji they were already dressed joined em with biscuits 3 glass shelves 2 glass sliding doors..timber came up looking almost like blackwood..also made 2 that hang on the wall for the 1:64 and 1:43 models in their cases..fiddly job they were and 1 mistake and it goes over the shoulder..

One of the law's of life...no matter how big a house you buy/build, you will acquire enough stuff to fill it and not even know how most of it got there :D

The 1:18's in two corner self built units, and the 43rds in a self built side board unit.

I bought my first display cabinet when I only had 30 odd 1/18's(at the time my collection i thought was complete) so I went out and got an expensive solid hard wood cabinet which held all my models. That was only 2 years ago! Now with over 100 1/18's and 2 more display cabinets to match with another being needed real soon my collection is getting very expensive. Living in a 2 bedroom flat space is limited so the tv and stereo might have to go to make more room and to pay for the next cabinet.

Just out of curiosity, and the interest of a fellow model collector, what do you collect Richard?. Presumably they're not all Biante models.

(BTW, you don't have to admit to any CC models you might or might not have....;) )

From memory all of the brands in my collection are:

Biante classics/premium (obviously), Autoart, Minichamps, Kyosho, Action, Exoto, Bburago, Maisto, UT, Road Tough, and Universal Hobbies. I think that covers everything.

My collection consists of (all 1:18):

- all Biante classic race cars released from 65E throught to Dick Johnson's 1978 XC.

- all HRT/Kmart/Team Brock Holden V8 Supercars.

- All #00 Falcon V8 Supercars plus a couple of other Ford V8 Supercars thrown in (Wilson DJR and Triple eight cars etc).

- around 40 odd F1 cars from Minichamps mainly with an Exoto Ferrari and Universal Hobbies Renault. Including all of the Minichamps Senna Collection. A few Action Indy cars as well.

- around 25 lemans cars covering most classes.

Plus a few road cars which I collected years ago (Bburago, UT, Maisto etc).

I stopped collecting road cars a while ago and now have a strict race car only policy.

Just a couple of cabinets would do me for now. Haven't had a good display for about 8 years now. Should look good once they are out of their boxes though.

Thanks for that Richard, it sounds like a nice collection. You really do need a couple of large display cabinets.
I note you don't have any rally cars. I guess you're not really into them, but there are some very nice ones out there (especially that Possum Bourne one!).

:)

I forgot those. I have a couple. Corolla WRC signed by Sainz and Moya and a Lancer Evo signed by Tommi. Plus the Bourne Subaru, I'm really proud of the way that one turned out.
