Don't get me wrong I love Holdens and some of the older cars but do you think that alot of the older Commodores and Falcons attract bogans?! As in hoons and young rebels and the certain who cause havoc and swearing and crime in some communities etc. I think they give alot of us fans a bad name. I love Clubsports but hopefully will get an VZ Sv8 when theyre depreciated considering it'll be a while untill I can afford one anyway. I like the look of them and obviously would be cheaper to run than a full on V8 maybe. But ten years on if I do get one cheap I dont want to be perceved as a bogan. I know not all of them are bogan but alot are. Sad I think. Waht are your thoughts.

Opps I meant SV6 and Im not trying to cause arguements here by the way. Anyway Dad's mates own some older Commodores Falcons etc and theyre definately not bogans. But then again some others are. Just an opinion.

The first gen Comm, like most 80s designs, are not the best looking cars but if I see an original HDT or even an SLE I appreciate it. Dont know if bogans drive them, maybe some of them do. What I know is that if a bogan is driving them, they wont be in good condition and thats when I hate them!

Only because of their price and availability, just like the HQ's and XA's used to be.

But what defines a Bogan. I spend a lot of my time driving and in my opinion, Rice attracts just as many dickheads as Aussie Cars.
It boils down to how gullible these people are. If they're easily influenced by society, they will follow the rest like sheep.

I am pretty sure I have in the past seen "bogans" driving BMW's, Rollers, Bentleys and even a Ferrari !!! It probably seems more DH's drive older Holdens & Falcons, but I dare say it is actually a RATIO kind of thing...Just way more younger blokes driving those vehicles because they are so much easier to get hold of for a realistic price. Dorks & Bogans will always be, no matter what they are driving!! Bottom line....Buy & drive what YOU like, if you aren't a DH in the first place, then if someone else thinks you are, perhaps they should have a peek in a mirror !!!

I checked GOOGLE for the web definition of "Bogan" as Ive been well versed growing up that they sport mullets and tattoos and wear flannels, blunnies and stubbies shorts and drink plenty of beer:D. Well here you go.........

# is Australian (especially teenage) slang for someone who is not `with it' in terms of behaviour and appearance, someone who is 'not us'; hence, someone horrible, contemptible.
www.anu.edu.au/andc/res/aewords/aewords_ab.php

# a term used for a stereotypical, uncultured Australian (booner used in some parts).
encyclopedia.laborlawtalk.com/Australian_English

# a term used for a lower class white Australian. Westie, meaning someone from the western suburbs of Sydney or Melbourne, has similar connotations (and is also used in Auckland, New Zealand). Other alternatives include bevan (in Queensland) and booner in Canberra.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocka

# Bogan is a derogatory Australian slang term for somebody who is perceived as being an unfashionable "lower-class" person, typically of British Isles ancestry and living in deprived urban areas. The term originated in Melbourne, and equivalent terms are:*Westie in Sydney (referring to Western Suburbs), and also in Waitakere (in the west of Auckland, New Zealand)*Bevan in Brisbane.*Chigger in Hobart.*(sometimes interchangeable with) Booner in Canberra.

Quite interesting I think. Above all I'm a massive fan of Holdens mainly from the late 80's onwards but I do notice alot of reckless and young hoons sure seem to buy alot of the older cars in particular the Commodores. Nothing wrong with that though is there? Just a sterotype.

So that means I am lower class, uncultured, unfashionable, western suburban & common !! But I'm not reckless and not YOUNG. Dunno whether that's a relief or not !!!

Info-Blizzard...

In my youth, Bogan was another word for headbanger, and had nothing to do with the Western suburbs of Melbourne...although your description holds true...

As I said, definition must have changed (in Melbourne anyway).

Cheers

"of British Isles ancestry"??????? I suppose that would explain why the Adelaide city of Elizabeth, set up for Pommy migrants (and named after our dear dear Queen, gawd bless 'er), is full of bearded tattooed blokes driving old Commodores aggressively. Ah, you can't beat the British DNA. Bogan is not really about the cars - after all there are plenty of bogans who have been banned after crashing their VL into a tree while drunk, and even without a car they might be still described as bogan, if you were being uncharitable. I have an old Ford but don't otherwise fit the bogan tag, so I think it's more the attitude and outlook that defines it. Beer, beard, tats, fighting, tight jeans, check shirt, Commodore or Falcon, suspicion of anything even remotely "arty", and thinking a burned sofa is an appropriate ornament for your front garden seems to apply to more than a few "of British Isles ancestry" in Elizabeth.

So I did! I was wondering where the "look" came from, as most Poms who arrived in Elizabeth did so from the 50s to 70s, and there was nothing like it in the UK at that time. Some of it must derive from the Aussie bush look as sported by Ned Kelly, and adopted as a sign of manliness. The bikie gangs seem to like it as well, and many blokes seem to want to aspire to being a bikie as the pinnacle of manliness.

Ever watch Neighbours and theres a family on it (new to the street, a mother two boys and two girls). Well the mums a bogan and so is her eldest. That's what I consider bogan - the way their dressed, their upbringing the stuff they say and do. Not necessarily the car they drive but sadly older Commodores and Falcons (not the really old ones) attract them dont you think;

Glenn off Big Brother is a bogan. If you see young girls wearing their boyfriends overlarge hoodies theyre bogan. If you wear Wu-Tang and DADA like brands all the time and hang in the mall swearing at the cops with a ciggie in your hand youre bogan. If you dress like the members off ACDC you're a bogan. Alot of the criminals and trouble makers on Blue Heelers are bogan. Ever watch Today Tonight or ACA with those destructive kids or abnormal abusive families in public housing and those who get their cars confescated? Well theyre bogan too. Well at least thats how I've grown up to perceive them!

Never ever heard of this bogan thing, so my dictionary tells me that a bogan is Canadian (Esp in the maritime provinces) a sluggish side stream.

Can't say I have ever seen any Canadians driving old Fords or Holdens beside slow running streams.

And bugger me if whilst I was reading through this stuff again, a bloody bogan in an old commode came thru the T intersection sideways, mounted the curb, dug a 8 inch deep hole in the verge for a distance of about 25 feet, nearly mounted the power pole on the corner, tossed a dead stubby whilst trying to find the steering wheel again, finally found a gear after wearing two cogs out crunching them, and sped off !!! With no visible tail lights!! So nothing has changed in this neck of the swamp !!! :D (Not a bad effort at the 'world sentence length record' either !!). :D:D
