It would appear another model shop (Automodels at Clyde ) is about to go by the wayside and close down. I rang them the other day and within weeks they will be closing.

On TV tonight (can't remember what channel)they had a 5min run on Ebay, saying that it is now one of the richest companies in the world and that Ebays aim is direct some of its profits(funds)into some of the third world countries so that the people of those countries can profit by using Ebay to sell....mmm have they got computers and electricity. .I would have thought food and water and medicine would have helped.
And yes I have used Ebay many times.

But lack of retail outlets where you can build a rappore and make sure what you want is put aside for you isn't.

I'm not so sure if ebay is the only cause of Automodels closing. I have been going there for 8 years, since the days when they were in Parramatta.

The best bloke I have ever bought a model car off was Mark Ewer when he worked there. Since he got punted last year when a new partner came along, I have been lied to, had to listen to them blaming the 'other person' for mistakes which I know were not his, not been called when cars have come in (and missed out on models), and lied to again. This was just in ONE VISIT to the store. I know of other people (big spenders) who have been through the EXACT same experience.

I don't like to see any small business failing, but sometimes it is obvious as to what is causing it, and how to fix it. That said, its sad to see AutoModels go.

Cheers,
Nathan.

Could'nt agree more, I had a couple of models on pre-order with Automodels, (guess I'll have to start hunting around all over again !) the first I've heard of them closing was via this forum.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find a reliable model shop around western Sydney

It is very sad to see this shop go, it used to be one of the best.
I think also the change of location from Church St in downtown Parramatta to back of nowhere in Clyde did them great harm. I know it was a rental cost thing, but still.
Also the new layout never came close to the feel of the old shop.

Had something to do with Bob Rosconi selling out to pursue other interests.

As soon as Bob sold it, Automodels started to go DOWNHILL QUICKLY!!!

Toyworld in Fyshwick are WAY to expensive. Even for models that are 2-3 y/o they're still charging FULL PRICE.

For MODELS that no one wants ??????????? & they want to stay in business:rolleyes:

I dropped in on Saturday morning, and they were open, pretty well cleaned out, a few 1:18 DJR Falcons, and a Jones Ozemail Falcon, plus a few autoart road cars all around the $75 mark, as well as an assortment of corgis busses etc.

Apparently they had the major sale on the weekend before, the guys there were saying you could'nt move in the store on that day, I got the impression that last Saturday was there last day.

Real shame !

I must say I found the new owners a lot less fun than Bob, Carol and Mark. Well, Mark. Carol always struck me - oh, I don't know - a bit 'out there'? And I only saw Bob once or twice. Someone told me they'd split up which was why the shop changed hands.

I agree that the move from Parramatta was probably their undoing. Sherriff's is still where it's been for the past few years, next to the fish shop, and is still doing well. I have a good relationship with Chris who owns Sherriff's now.

Model Cars Too in Sydney is also worth a visit. I'd be there all the time except I work in Parramatta - and not close to Sherriff's which is probably a good thing.

I still like Mal's too. I have a mate who only deals with Mals - even though they're half a day's drive away - everthing is over the phone.

I deal with HobbyCo in Sydney (10% off being a member) there service seems to have picked up over the last 6months.

Model Cars Too - Mark is always helpful and good for a chat.

I have also dealt with Mals and as my parents live close by to Mals I get them to pick up the cars I want :)

I have ordered from a few other shops interstate and have had no problems at all.

If you can not find something locally there are normally plenty of other shops around that can help out.

The last owners/partners gave us the same grief and then never paid us from Jan. Non-payment causes stoppage of supply, which would have happened with all suppliers, so it ain't long to the end.

i second that Mark at modlel car 2 is great
alway comes over for a chat and to talk about new cars comming in and carl's models were good I got the silver porsche 959 i missed the first time for retail price not the second hand inflatted price.

I dont like to moan but if you compare model cars 2 costomer sevice to shire models in sydney it couldnt be further apart. I think costomer service has every thing to do with getting repeat sales and thats why i return to Model cars2.
When shire modle had a half priced sale a few months ago and i asked if he had the number 16 PWR car he told me it hadnt been made in 43 scale. ??????

True Darin, but there is sometimes when dirty laundry is best not aired.

However it is each person's opinion as to whether their business should be discussed in the public domain...

Kind of, but not quite...

What I meant was that it's a personal choice whether or not to reveal a business dealing with another party. Whether it's ethcial/moral/appropriate/whatever to do so is another matter. Then again, far be it from me to tell anyone what to say or how to run their business.

So how is sunny Brisbane anyway Darin? :D

Thats really interesting to hear, if I understand this right it means they were still taking pre-orders in May for models they knew they could'nt supply. This means you lock yourself in by pre-ordering a model with them and then miss out, yet they knew they could'nt supply all along

As I said, they were the pits. This is highly unethical to lead collectors into understanding they will receive an upcoming model when they had not received any stock since January (from us) and KNEW that they would not be receiving more.

While to some folk, it may appear as 'airing dirty linen', which I stated I am not in the habit of doing, but I will protect the interests of collectors.

The thread started out suggesting that it was tough running a model shop. The reason it can get tough is the total inability of some shop keepers, and we have seen it many times.

The harm they do to themselves is usually self inflicted, but they should always be truthful to collectors.

If they are truthful with everyone, the business usually succeeds.

Speaking of model shops disappearing, Racenutz at Broadbeach seems to have vanished. His prices were always way over the top, so it wouldn't surprise me if he's closed his doors.
Get most of my models from Race Gallery at Southport, can't beat their prices, and I know if I pre-order something from them that I do actually get the call letting me know when they arrive. Use to get my models from Toyworld at Australia Fair, but they never bothered to ring me when models arrived and I missed out on heaps, and they were dearer. With that kind of service I am surprised they are still a stockist

MAX1960: "Racenutz...Didn't actually need to know where he is, I think his prices are too expensive, and personally I wouldn't buy from the guy unless I had no other option."

THE END?
I think his move is the beginning of the end. He complained the rent went up astronomically at his old location, making business unfeasible, yet he was the only one out of 100 shops to move out of that location. I think the bubble has burst for him...he is now in an out-of-the way location, in a tiny shop, no-one knows he's there, plus he is stuck with a surplus of unwanted & overpriced stock.

HE WAS COMPETITIVELY PRICED?
He used to sell things like a 1.18 Senna McLaren for $300, when Biante would at the same time have them in stock for $100.

HE WAS HONEST?
He claimed his F1 teamshirts were genuine and charged $300 for them. I got the exact same shirts off ebay for $20. You draw your own conclusions.

HE WAS HELPFUL TO DEAL WITH?
Max1960, I completely agree with your comments about the way he treats female customers. He also goes to great lengths to sniff out a "less-informed" customer, for what purpose I let you guess.
BTW I hope you never tried to get an exchange from his shop because of wrong size, or stock that had been mislabelled.
When I rang up for mail order on an item once, he tried to charge me double the price that I had seen the item for in his shop just the week prior.

Just forgot to mention...there are many other helpful and decent diecast shops in the Gold COast/ SE QLD area. For a start, try Palm Beach Models on the GOld Coast Highway. There are also a number of better shops in the wider-Brisbane area.

Its funny how some fly-by-night operators come and go (there have been a number close down across Aust this year). Yet the same old tried and tested operaters, that have been around for ever, keep plugging away, doing a good solid job. These are the operators to stick with.

actualy he has two shops but his prices are so over the top its not funny, I saw a 1/18th scale Pontiac GTO at his carrara shop for $299, i then found it on the net for just over $100, all his 1/64 scales are rip offs, he has a bunch of Winner Circle NASCARs which are pretty much Hot Wheels cars (mass produced nothing limited about them, found at K-Mart, Walmart etc) for $50....($50!). When he discounts products he can be cheap as, i picked up a 1/24 Jeff Gordon NASCAR for about 40 bucks, however now on his website he has it listed for over $200

Plus i have heard he doesn't deal with Biante anymore (or Biante doesn't deal with him more likely)

if you want a good model shop on the Goldie go to Race Gallery off Ferry Road in southport

A friend went down there on the long week end and mentioned that it has disappeared? Does any one know if they have moved or have they closed down?

There was a shop called Highland Models or something like that. I think they were in Mittagong.
There adress is 118 Main Street Mittagong. ( Highland models & Hobbies )

It looks like Automodels (the ex. Clyde & Parramatta shop that has closed down) is back up and running, in a slightly different form.

pity they didn't sort out their pricing while they were doing the website, as it's still rather extreme (from memory the site you linked to is the expensive arm of Trax)!!!

MMH still carry a VERY GOOD RANGE OF DIECAST IN ALL SCALES.
For those of you looking for the HDT VK in 1:43, & 1:64 Walky, they still had stock available when I was last there (1 month ago).

Chris Fraser has been with MMH since their days in Queanbeyan & is reasonably knowledgable in Diecast.

If RC Cars is your thing, Chris is the MAN then "Barnsey" (the owner) has a good knowledge regarding RC Aircraft including Helicopters (& he's spent a lot of $$$$$$$$ in becoming proficient flying a Heli

In my experience, if you pre order with MMH, you'll get your car.
PLEASE DON'T PRE-ORDER if you dont intend to P/U AS THAT WILL PUT YOU ON A BLACK LIST & they wont deal with you except with a Cash or Credit Card 1st.

The Owner has been very good to me (especially during my horrible year for my family) I've ordered a couple of single units from MMH. They have to pay before they receive stock, therefore they have taken me at my word. This being such a foul year for me financially, MMH have maintained faith in me as I have approx 3k worth of Diecast which they are holding for me.

As the F/Y is coming, MMH have told me that they can no longer order anymore cars until some of Debt/Diecast has been cleared. THATS MORE THAN FAIR. In fact they still have my Corner. The only larger Corner than mine, belongs to lachlan.

If your having trouble securing that elusive Diecast, give them a go (If possible you can GET a Model # as this will speed up the answer to your questions.).

Another good store is Rock Wallaby in Tuggeranong. Give Geoff a call.

Cheers:)

For anyone seeking one of the Murphy cars either his season car or his 03 & 04 Bathurst cars as well as a number of the other hard to get Models, you might like to try Monaro models & Hobbies on phone 02 62996797 or on the web at www.monaromodels.com.au. (http://www.monaromodels.com.au.)

If you ring, try to negotiate to get a reasonable price

I know this shop is known for its high prices, but I would hate to see it close. Back in the late 80s when the hobby was a lot smaller than it is now, there was something special about going to this little shop in a quiet street in Burwood. I was always welcomed & looked after. Another novelty was receiving their catalogues in the mail.
(before computers kiddies). Bought my first biante car there. Brock 28c for $165.00. in 2000 on my honeymoon. Told the wife it would be romantic lol.

Cheers David

No, it's in the suburb of Burwood in Melbourne

I remember spending half a day trekking out there on the No 75(?) tram a few years back, then walking down this windy, suburban street full of houses, with no shops in sight wondering if I was in the right spot before I eventually stumbled across it - didn't end up buying anything, but it was an interesting way to kill a few hours in any case...:D

Not quite across the road, but not too far away - more down the road and around the corner....about 20 minutes walk from memory - it was a few years ago and I'm not from Melbourne so don't know the area all that well, but that's how I remember it - it's a proper shop, it's just nestled in amongst a residential area, not on a main road or in prominent set of shops
