View Full Version : New Commodore views
Hey guys, if you want a look at the different angle views of the new Commodores, go to this page and look to the left side where you can "build your own" Commodore.
http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/action/modeloverview?modelid=4005
I "built" a nice red SS and yes, it does look like a Magna from the back. Took me a while to download the software.

After looking at the VY last weekend and then putting my backside in the new Barra Futura on Wednesday, i've got to say that (in my opinion) the Commodore is still the best car for sale in Australia today.
Before anyone asks, i drive a 98 EL Falcon. This will now be replaced next year as i've been hanging out for the Barra and to be honest i'm very disapointed with it (still looks to much like an AU) I think a 6sp Commodore SV8 with leather steering wheel and electric windows might be its replacement.
If you can get your hands on this months Wheels magazine and the Drive section from the Melb. Age it makes for very interesting reading about the new Falcon and Commodore.
Remember this MY opinion, which i'm sure will be disputed for and against by many other members.
cheers

Had the same response today at work...15 out of 17 people said that it still looked like the AU with different headlights....then they said that the rear looks similar to the lastest VY......geez...first the VY was picked on for looking like the Magna....and now?
I give up!
I'll stick with my VN and pay my house off instead!:D
Not being biased but really Holden have a bad attitude towards making cars"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Simply the VY is a 5 year old VT and Holden still have a Gen 3 V8 in them and the hopreess V6.
Let's hope the next Commodore (probably VE) will get a Gen 4 chev V8 and a propor V6 engine.
My guess is that the VY will be the AU falcon of all Commodores.
Ford spent $500 million in the BA's devolopment,Toyota spent $350 million on the new camry and Holden only spent $250 million on the VY's devolopment(Holden claim they spent $350 million).
It's interesting that Ford are now putting the 260kw XR8 up against all 255kw HSV's while the 235kw SS goes up against the 240kw XR6 turbo.
If I owned a Holden I'd wait round for the VE Commodore, not waste my money on a VY,I'm still 3 months away from getting a L plate.

If you want a real rocket that will beat all of the australian Musclecars,(nonmodified) get yourself a Subaru WRX,$42000 plus ORC and you are ruler of the road Sorry but true.
these amasing machines are much better value than even a Ferrari sic.
plus hold there value !

Read yesterday that the new Falcons have already been recalled due to a rear suspension part found missing on cars and problems with locking the car something to do with the BCM I suspect.

there is alot of people saying that the ba looks to much like the au
but the vy side structure looks like the vx both cars still look a bit like the old models.
as for the recall with so many new componets in the ba there is bound to be a few teething problems as any new model has thats right holden fans even holdenwould have recall on new cars. ford have had problems in the early ninties with cyl heads
and other minor componatry and holden have had transmisson recalls and even teething problems on the gen 111
i like my fords but like to keep and open mind the commodores have there good points but the falcon(IN MY OPINION) is better to ride in and drive.

Hey Guys
Like Brchi I went bum down in the VY SS (and the BA Ghia) last weekend. I liked the "feel" of both cars (the SS is way better than the S or standard Comm inside). I disagree that the BA is too similiar to the AU - I reckon its too similiar to the VY!
I am fortunate enough to have some contacts at a finance company and I look forward to borrowing each vehicle (standard 6's of course) for a week each very soon. I will make my own judgement after that.
For the record, I am a lifelong Ford man, but when getting a new car in 2000, I had to go the VT S. Geez that AU handles like a powerboat and looks like a bubblewrapped Tarago.
Ferrari - the Wrex is a super car - my mate has an STI. When costing even a standard WREX don't forget the insurance. If you are a young bloke you will be looking at a shipload of premiums on an annual basis.

After looking around last at the new Falcon weekend, I went & had a look at one of these new VY Commodore SV8 (basically an SS with 17' wheels (instead of 18') and without a passengers lumbar support and power windows, oh there is a smaller body it on it as well !!! ) & I tell you, if the dearler had done the right thing i would have ordered the dam thing, then and there - without a test drive!!!!
By the time you add crusie control and electy windows its RRP was just over $46,000 and i thought "not bad"
But when I asked about a "better" price, the dearlers comment was "thats it, take it or leave it". Subsequently I left it.
Apart from being about $4000 above what I really wanted to spend for my car (I currently drive an EL Falcon GLi), I was still keen to pay for it (I really wanted a WRX, but found out that Subaru won't do deals & the WRX can't tow my ski boat 1000kg).
Car dealers can be so silly sometimes !!!!!

I understand about what you are saying in respect to some of the salesperson's out there.
I believe that this problem comes from the fact that recent history shows that the Commodore was/is a lot better car than the past Falcons. ( Everyone can & will debate this)
Due to this they get enough sales without having to better their price.
I have not yet tested the new Falcon, but have been told that while the VY may still be better than the BA - Holden now have some competition.
Maybe this might help us poor consumers to get a better price on whatever we decide.
Yes I am a Holden man but true competition is good for both parties.

I too have checked out the new model showrooms.
I'm undecided but feel better about the Ford.
The VT/VX was such a complete design I can't help but feel it's been bastardised. As others have stated, the basic profile of each car hasn't changed, but the type of things criticised of the AU have now been applied by Holden to the VY.
The BA has tryed to harmonise the at odds curves and angular edges of the AU, whereas the VY has introduced angular aggressive front and rear styling to an otherwise smooth curved body.
Summary : right moves by Ford and wrong moves by Holden.
They are still both great cars for money, and I like the Holden minibucks SS version, the SV8, but a basic manual transmission BA XT with it's standard 180kW twin cam six looks like a bargain performance machine. It wasn't that many years ago that you had to venture down to your HSV dealer to get that power combo.
