hi all

i was wondering if anyone knew of a video clip on the internet that showed how some bright spark decided to throw a bucket of water at the car because there was oil on the windscreen...happened in 1993 i think.

thanks, mjf

I saw it in the clip that is matched to Lee Kernagon's V8 version of the boys from the bush and it is on quite a few videos eg Holden Motorsport, Greg Norman's history of Holden etc. Dunno if she is on the net. What a classic though.

Yeh, this was a shocking decision on the HRT brains trust behalf, they should have known waht the result of throwing a bucket of water onto a vehicle moving at speed would have..

It's on some of the HRT team reviews, it wasn't 1993 though. 2001 or 2002 i believe, and if i'm not mistaken wasn't it at Phillip Island?

Come to think of it I think it is also on the HRT history DVD....

Hmmm a little search on Google found this below - but dambed, I thought it was at Bathurst as well - wrong :(
(I'm assuming this is fact)

Shattered
No Point Cryin' (Sandown 1993)
Given the Holden Racing Team's current domination, it might surprise younger V8 fans that this was not always the case. Was a time when HRT couldn't win a chook raffle - even if it bought all the tickets! Take, for instance, the 1993 Sandown 500. During that event, HRT's then lead driver, Tomas Mezera, complained to his team that he was unable to see through the windscreen. Apparently, oil dumped on his windscreen from the rival Brock Commodore (in Peter's pre-HRT days) had greatly impaired Mezera's vision. HRT threw several bucket loads of water at Tomas' VP Commodore as it passed the pits. The last of these exploded the windscreen, ruining the team's race! Racing folklore has it that Brock was headed down pitlane to warn his rivals of the likely outcome, when the windscreen shattered. The greatest irony, was that HRT then received a stop-go penalty - throwing water at windscreens was against the rules! As the advertising jingle said: "No point cryin', call Windscreens O'Brien!".

Yep confirmed in the HRT book, 1993 Sandown, they actually confess that it was “stupidity and complete lack of professionalism. They claim it was the sister car that dropped the oil!

My bad, what was i getting confused with? I swear something happened at phillip island a couple years ago with a broken window...hitting a bird?

Skaifey had an incident with a seagull hitting the windscreen down the main straight a couple of years ago if I recall correctly

They did it at Bathurst, Crompton and Percy's car I seem to recall...

I'm dredging back through my memory here. The water was thrown from the driver's left (ie not Sandown) as the car was somewhere around the timing tower on pit straight. Back me up here people!

You're thinking of the Gibbs/Onslow Nissan GT-R at Bathurst in 1992. They threw a couple of buckets at that car before the stewards called them in during the opening hour of the race.

Yes, that is correct, happened right in front of us, the seagull shot I reckon at least 50ft in the air after impact. Here’s a pic of the car after (once cleared), I don't think it's too gory!

Hmmm, I really thought it was HRT, was that the race where HRT bounced over Crompton's bonnet to close the thing? My menory is going

I thought it was HRT at Bathurst, dunno what year but that sticks in my memory for some reason (although I've killed a bit of it off over the years)

I also thought it was thrown over the concrete wall from the left of the car on pit straight = Bathurst
The windscreen got smashed and HRT (whoever it was driving ?) had to pit and they then took the smashed screen out. Only then to be called back into the pits by the stewards to remove the rear window as well because it posed a danger of flying out.
Surely I haven't lost that many marbles by thinking this ?
Seems MarkHM and I are thinking alike. Please someone back us up with some facts

Dont tell me it's been tried it twice - Sandown and Bathurst ? LOL

As for the original question for a video clip of it by MjF - I dont like your chances of finding one ;)

Dunno about the "Water-screen" thing, but the Rear Screen kick out was the Brock Mobil HDT in the VK Grp A, the year the Jags came 1-2. Brock had to have the front screen removed & was then called in to have the rear removed for safety. It was famous as being one of the all-time quick stops. In, pit-bloke dives in the back, swings off roll-cage & boots the screen out, rolls out've car, Brock hammers it. He then blew the Timing-chain chasing down the Jags.

This was taken from the HRT book which is an official release so I'd take it as fact. Thomas was driving it!

That makes sense. I can now recall the HRT Sandown incident but, like BAM1 and MarkHM, I also could vaguely remember something happening at Bathurst as well, but it was a lot earlier than the V8 Supercar era. I seemed to remember it being in the early to mid eighties, so that ruled out HRT, but HDT makes sense.

yes the year was 1993 & the track was sandown, if you look at the video clip they through the water from the right side, sandown pits is on the drivers side if you look at it from front on, i think also wayne gardner was stood down for this race after upsetting the holden heavies

I'm going to get to the bottom of this, I feel a weekend sitting down with all my Bathurst tapes, lots of bear and the pause button might get to the bottom of things. I am almost at the point where I would bet my first borne, or a 75 Torana on this (I have no kids and at this stage don't have the car so the bet's over to you guys, almost like 2 up with no coins!!)

One incident I was thinking of (happened at the same place) was Crompton tagging Grice in 1991 (both in HRT VN Commodores)...the quest continues

Almost right. You're forgetting about a certain BMW that slid into second place that year. Walkinshaw brought three Jags to the mountain in 1985 and they all suffered problems of one sort or another.
Tom ended up finishing third in a car that used nearly as much oil as it did petrol! The two Jags running at the end crossed the line for a photo opportunity (spoiled by the Mulvihill/Jones Commodore (?)), but Ravaglia/Cecotto were definately second.
Brock passed this car for second place, but I think it re-passed him a lap later going up the mountain. You just didn't see it happen on Channel 7!
