Briscoe was on the inside of Alex Barron going into Turn 3. Briscoe was quite high on the track and touched Barren which turned Barren sideways, with his car practically becomeing a ramp for Briscoe who rode up his wheel and took off into the catchfencing.
His car broke into 3 pieces (tub, engine and gearbox/rearend), but crucially the tub did it's job in an accident reminiscent of Kenny Brack's in Texas at the end of 2003.
It is also worth remembering that Chip Ganassi himself had a related crash (except he rode up the inside wall) which effectively ended his career at Michigan in 1984 with Al Unser Jr.
Kosuke Matsuura also had a crash, presumebly avoiding some of the debris.
Briscoe is seemingly alright considering the accident, with two broken collarbones, bruised lung and concussion.
Another sad part of it is the fact the next round is at Watkins Glen, where Briscoe was fastest during testing there.

Glad I knew he was ok before I saw the incident. This year is proving to be not only a disaster for Briscoe, but for Ganassi Racing as well.

I also heard he was OK before I saw the horrifying footage, otherwise I would also have assumed it was fatal. I remember a few crashes that I saw live and assumed the driver was killed, including Berger's fiery Imola crash and Kevin Cogan's Indy 500 crash, where he hit the end of the pit wall and the car exploded. In both instances the drivers were intact, but I would have liked to have known beforehand and saved myself the sick feeling in my stomach.

I caught this one at the tail-end of 10 news yesterday afternoon, it was a pretty big one for sure.
When I saw it, it reminded me of Kenny Brack's similar crash a couple of years ago.
It shows just how fast these guys are really going when they get together with one another and then the fence, they just tear the car apart big time.
Briscoe's difficult season just doesn't seem to get any better...:(

That was a shocking accident, I'm amazed Ryan wasn't hurt more seriously, did you see the engine block lying on it's own some way away from the rest of the debris..

Thanks for the Link clubbie, yeah I watched the race on Foxtel, glad he is okay apart from the bones n bumps, it could of been a lot worse.
Cheers
Yeah thanks clubbie. I saw a photo in the paper but thats the first time I have seen the incident as it happened. From that it appears Ryan was lucky to get away with the injuries he got.
Just as a side note I see Alex Zanardi has won the Italian Touring Car Championship in a specially modified BMW.
Inspirational.

Very Inspirationl indeed, thanks for the HOT update BB, that really is not suprising though, Alex sure is a master behind the wheel, as we now see nothing stood in his way, he is such a friendly down to earth person aswell.

Boy that was a scary crash  !!!
I must admit if it wasn't for the extreme safety of these cars, we would been minus another talented race driver.
I wonder if this might change Ryan's mind about racing in America and will this be the last straw for Chip ??? One couldn’t blame him as he’s certainly forked out for more than his fair share of destroyed of race cars this year.
Thankfully Ryan walked away from this one, as for me it was very simular to the Zanardi crash. Seeing a race cars break up the way that one did was quite frightning.
cheers.

Ryan has had a torrid time on debut to say the least. That said it's not like the team as a whole are going any better. I think the best they've done this year is a fifth place.
His time in the states has done Ryan no favours at all. I was worried about this from the start for him.

Hopefully this doesn't start to drive the nails into the coffin of his F1 aspirations, in hindsight perhaps that Jordan offer might have been a better option ???
cheers. :)

I think it would have been a much better option for him. He would have still been on the radar of Toyota at Jordan.
He might be a good replacement for Courtney in the Japanese GT Championship when James goes to HRT! (Here's hoping!).

I think he made the right choice this year.
He had the choice of paying for a Jordan drive (and look at how they are going), or getting paid to drive for Ganassi, i know which one i would have picked.
Maybe Ryan could join Courtney at Toyota in the SuperGT Championship, rather than Courtney being saddled with his current (much slower) co-driver.

Webber paid for a Minardi drive and that didnt hurt him.

And if he had paid for the Jordan drive, he surely would have been on the podium at Indianapolis :D

Running around at the back of an f1 field is MUCH more relevant than going around in circles. Da Matta was a gun in CHAMP cars and did not work out very well for Toyota at all.
Ryan will live to regret going to America I think. His best bet is to succeed over there now and make a career in America.

Katherine Legge will be announced as getting the PKV Chump car drive tonight according to Autosport.
Where does this leave Ryan Briscoe? I haven't heard about him having anything in place other than the HRT enduro drive for next year.

adding 1 and 1 and getting 42...
Isn't Britek still looking for either a sponsor or a user of their second licence?
Hasn't TEGA got an extra licence they require to be used to bring the field up to the minimum contracted 32?
Didn't HRT want to run a third car this year?
This is my grey matter speaking...so probability of this actually occuring is nil!
Cheers

It's as good a theory as any Leigh. Ryan needs to find something to do and I think his overseas career is just about over unless Toyota throw him another life-line in Japan or somewhere else.
I doubt this will happen. Toyota have no involvement in the Champ cars (where Ryan seemed to have all his hopes lying) at all from what I can see so my conclusion would be they are not real interested in his career anymore.

Briscoe hasn't really done a lot to help his own career. He seems to get caught up in a lot of accidents for no apparent reason (witness Sears Point last year).

Vasser has still not said if he will retire or not and the team were keen to retain DaMatta. They seem to be running out of seats. With a rookie already signed I would have thought they would want an experienced driver there as a guide.

DaMatta has fallen out of favour at PKV as Newman-Haas have decided not to run a third car for Auriol Servia this season.
Servia is now set to be announced as the second driver at PKV according to Autosport.
What next for Ryan? Wonder if Skaifey will get a phone call asking if there happens to be an unused car lying around at the HRT workshop! :D

A1 GP is what's next for Ryan. He will be racing the Team Australia car at Laguna Seca and is in talks to complete the year. Anything that keeps Christian Jones away from the car is good in my book!

You and me both Wayno, it just proves that with the right person behind the wheel Team Australia can be up the sharp end of the grid..
