View Full Version : Should the Minardi name stay if F1?

I was just wondering what people think about the situation with Red Bull taking control of Minardi? Should the name stay or should it vanish?
Personally, I always thought Minardi was Italian for 'rear of field'. If great names like Tyrrell, Lotus and Brabham have fallen by the way side then why all the fuss being thrown up about a name change for the perennial strugglers?

Quite agree, they have not contributed much to the sport and no-one should mourn a change of name. Eddie Jordan has been complaining about the sackings and name change at Jordan...but he did so after the cheque was cleared!

Dozens of teams have fallen by the wayside - pulling a magazine out at random shows that for the 1988 Portuguese GP there was Lotus, Zakspeed, Coloni, Arrows, Benetton, March........and there were dozens more in the decades before, so there isn't much reason to preserve a name that no longer belongs.

In it's entire history in F1 has Minardi ever not finished dead last in Manu . standings? I don't think so. So why the hell would anyone want to be associated with that. Look at all the teams that have gone. Ligier, Stewart,Jaguar, Bennetton, Lola, the list goes on. These teams all actually won races well okay Jag didn't but did as Stewart.
The only thing is how are we going to be able to tell the two sets of teams apart? Are they going to painted different?

It's a pretty short lead in time to next year and it looks like the team will have to pretty much work with what they have.
So I'm betting one team will be a hell of a lot faster than the other!

Yep, from their debut season in 1985 through to 1995 Minardi were not the 'wooden spooners' in F1, also in 1999 and 2002 the chronically underfunded Minardi outscored the high budget BAR and Toyota teams respectively.

Let's not forget that a number of real motor racing talents got noticed driving for Minardi either..

To lose the Minardi name from F1 would be unfortunate indeed..

I agree. If it was possible I think I would like to see the Minardi name kept. Apart from Ferrari, Williams, McLaren (from memory without doing any research) the Minardi name has been unchanged since the 80's and with all the ownership changes has survived as well.

Maybe we could think of it as 'Great White Hope' in Swaheely :D

Red bull deserve to create a new tradition in Formula 1. We saw on RPM last sunday that they have added a relaxed feel to the formula 1 fraternity. Unlike any other team they are competing for just commercial reasons. They have no history to defend. It will be likely that the cars next year for "minardi" will be identical to the red bull cars, so why name them minardi's when they will be red-bull ferrari's.

The way I see it, Red Bull own the Team so they can name it whatever they damn well please. It's not like we're in danger of losing "Ferrari", "McLaren" or "Williams", after all. Those names really mean something.

Personally the Minardi name itself doesn't mean much to me, apart from being a minnow. They haven't followed up racing with a road car or anything evocative like Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus etc. So if the name goes I won't really miss it.

I appreciate the team behind the name and if they come back in 06 with new financing, brand and image, all the better I think.

Just my opinion.

So did names like Lotus, Brabham and Lola and we lost them.

I don't understand all this hang up with old team names, once ownership has changed.

Paul Stoddard chose to keep the Minardi name, but it was his choice, If the new owners want to change it or keep it going, then it should be their decision, unless it is written into the condition of sale.

I don't see this to be any different to last year when the Jaguar team was sold & renamed to RBR. No one really cared that the Jaguar name was lost to F1 & I suspect no one will really worry about losing the Minardi name either.

cheers :)

It was a condition of sale...not sure whether it was imposed by the previous owner or Mr Ecclestone...

Won't miss them - if it means two fewer cars become road blocks for the rest, I'm happy for the name Minardi to dissapear!!! At least Paul had the integrity to protect the workforce and Italian base upon his sale, but the name means nothing as we have lost far greater names in the past such as mentioned in previous posts.

I think you'll find Red Bull will take the team to the UK. It makes no sense for them to stay in Italy.
Red Bull now own the team and I think they should be allowed to move it wherever they want.

Lola..............wasn't she a dancer at the Copa?:D

Lotus, Brabham & er, Lola. Such is commercial reality. Though Sir Jack did say once that Brabham (the Team) had as much to do with him as KFC did with "The Colonel".:D
