View Full Version : Time to gripe about the modeling world..

Don't worry I just need to be on my soapbox for a couple of min...
I want to know the logic that goes on with some model companies.
For example:
I really would like to start a 1:43 Dakar collection. Being a young one though I want to collect the modern ones(ie 2003-2005). Where are they though?! The Mitsubish that won the Dakar this year is nowhere to be seen. The Nissan that McRae drove is no where to be seen. But the VW Toureg has 3 models coming out. I want to know what it is that decides whether or not a model is made. Surely they must reealise that we as collectors like sets(ie F1 grid, WRC lineup, Dakar lineup, etc)
Just more annoying than anything else. There is no logic behind it from a customer's stand point.
Sorry was just searching today and felt I had to gripe for a little bit. :)

It is up to individual teams and companys to commision the Dakar models. I suggest you contact the team/manufacturer you want models of an inform them of your disappointment that they have yet to commision the production of scale replicas of their cars.
Its the best hope you've got really. I've tried and failed to get various other models produced in the past.

There are some cars that you just can't believe haven't been modelled. The most glaring example for me from the rally world is a 1:18 version of Ari Vatanen's Pikes Peak Peugeot.
With the exposure this car has had from 'Climb Dance' I would have thought a model of this would be a given. I'd have one for sure!

And Walter Rohrl's Pikes Peak Audi (on Audi's own video), but at least that has finally been listed as to be made (after only 2 decades....). For me it's hard to believe that none of the major Group B rally cars that awed the motorsport world between 19 and 21 years ago have been made by a quality manufacturer in 1:18. No MG Metro 6R4, no Ford RS200 (just the recent Ricko one), no Audi Sport Quattro S1, no Peugeot 205 T16......We have a Renault 5T from Revell, and the start of some Audi Quattros from AutoArt, but given the popularity in Europe and beyond it seems amazing that these cars have taken a back seat to other, less notable cars.
I'm not certain that teams have to commission their cars to be modelled - manufacturers will model whatever they think (rightly or wrongly) will sell. Biante don't make only those cars that their owners and drivers have asked them to make.

Spark Models are doing the Dakar BMW X5's in 1/43
Solido are also doing the BMW X5's in both 1/18 & 1/43, and also the Mitsubishi Pajero Evo (see www.solido.com)
Although noone has yet answered my earlier thread on where to purchase Solido models in Australia......

The problem with Dakar cars is the sheer number that are involved in the event. Therefore as with the privateer rally cars often the only way to add a car to your collection is through one of the kit manufacturers (with much higher costs)
In some ways i'm glad that some of the 1/18 rally cars haven't been modelled until recent times. Looking at the difference between some of the older kits to newer kits and older 1/43s I hate to think what a 1995 release of the Impreza 555 would look like  that said i'd like to see one of that car! :D

Solido are good in the sense that they do cars others don't..but the quality is not up to my standards so to speak. When I first started collecting they were but after seing AutoArt and others I pretty much got rid of all my Solidos apart from the Skoda Fabia.
If they would just make a better set of wheels. Sounds silly but a detailed set of wheels will realy make or break a car's appearance.

Don't worry, Nick. Just wander down to your local Newsagent & you might see some of those Grp. B Monsters for sale. Oh, but they are only 1/43!:D

Yes, and they're not up to the Spark or iXO type standard, but it is 1:18 I'm hankering after. A quality AutoArt of the Quattro S1 E2 would take pride of place.....

hi there,i'm from new zealand, and from way over here, i agree with you way over there...while my appetite for V8 'supercars' is satisfied,[and my appetite for 'superbikes'],i also love the 'paris to dakar rally, the trucks, and the bikes, and the diversity of the cars, even a magazine on the subject with accompaning 'models' would be a start,as such models are few and far between, and the scales are scattered and varied to say the least....
