Hi, my thinking is that they are lights to illuminate the car number when raced in the dark (being that they are postitioned above the number on each door),but was this car raced in the dark?or are they a throw back to a different capri, and not really meant to be on the moffat capri?

You'll see the same thing on racing Ferrraris etc from the 1960s and 70s, where they took part in endurance racing. Indeed some road-going classic Ferraris in the UK (like various 250 GTOs and LMs) have the lights even though they lack any other clue that they have a racing heritage. Interestingly the picture on the Capri box doesn't show the lights, and I wonder whether Moffat's didn't have them, but the European versions already modelled did, and they've made their way onto the Aussie version by accident. Did Moffat race at night?

dont know if you have any other versions of the capris but my minichamps jochen mass example definately does not have these lights if indeed thats what they are.

I have not had a comprehensive look but, in the magazine, "Moffat the making of a legend", page 48/49 there's a couple of b/w photos which indicate the car did indeed have the lights above the numbers to illuminate them in any night racing scenarios.

Gee, very well spotted Billford. I wondered what they were on mine without giving it much thought.
Actually Moffat did at least race his Chevy Monza at night. I was at a twilightmeeting at Oran Park in Feb 1980 and he did a couple of night races in his Monza.

I have a suspicion I may have been there for that mick78. Indeed through most of the 70's they quite often had night races at OP. I seem to remember a Sport Sedan race during a night meeting when John Goss had a bit of a bingle in the Mcleod Ford Falcon. (Early 1974 from memory). That was the yellow sport sedan. Not sure though if Moffat ever raced the Capri there at night or not, I only remember seeing it at Sandown and I think Calder, during day meetings, but I know he did race it at a bunch of other tracks & being Sports Sedans meant those meetings did not necessarily coincide with ATCC Meetings. Sorry I realise this is a bit "off thread". :)

That one was the only one that I ever went to at night. They were great events and it is a shame save for the Bathurst 12/24 hour races (and they are finished too) there do not seem to be any more of these sort of races unless someone in another state can correct me. What I remember about that meeting is that Garry Willmington debuted the first XD Group C racing Falcon. I would have loved to see Moff's Capri race in the flesh. Only ever saw his Monza and that very late in its career.

Weaving dangerously off topic....
Oran Park still have a couple of night meetings a year - there's one this weekend, (29/10/05) being run by the NSW Road Racing Club.
They are still lots of fun, even without all the superstars. Actually, they might be more fun because there are no superstars.
