I was privileged to have a ride in the famous Rolls Royce Silver Ghost "AX 201", allegedly valued at 10 million pounds in 1987, although not auctioned. It was at the end of its restoration by my landlord (who also ran an exclusively R-R restoration and servicing company in Henley-on-Thames). Sadly it wasn't until several years later that I realised how special the car was, even though he showed me lots of magazine articles and press clippings about it. He always had old Rollers around the place (including George Harrison's) and so this was just another one to me. It was a nice car though, with silver plated bodywork over the chassis that had set a London to Edinburgh speed record.

In the October 2004 edition of "Classic Cars" they ran a feature on the "24 Most Valuable Cars in the World", on he basis that many of the rarest cars will never be auctioned.
The highest valued car was the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR #722 - the Mille Miglia winner driven by Stirling Moss. Described by a variety of experts as "The Ultimate", the car was valued at GBP 15 million - about A$ 40 million but it is the showcase of the Mercedes museum in Germany and isn't for sale.
Runners up were the 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR "Uhlenhaut" for GBP 13.5 million, the 1930 Bugatti Type 41 Royale for GBP 9 million, the 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C for GBP 8.5 million and the 1954 Mercees W196 F1 car of Fangio for GBP 8 million.
A few other surprises - GBP 2.5 m for an Aston Martin Zagato, the 1959 Aston Martin DBR1 LeMans winner for GBP 3 million, GBP 3 million for the 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona, GBP 6 million for a 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 (only 3 made).
The closest to a modern classic is Michael Schumacher's F1 cars which are changing hands for GBP 2 million.

About 2 weeks ago there was the RAC Centenary rally here in Perth.
There were some very special cars there including a handbuild rendition of a Jaguar in yellow by a 80 odd year old.
other cars were a Cord and some Very old veteran cars from the very early 1905 era.
Plus many cars that normaly are not shown on the show circuit.
again my pics are to big to post, but I am sure someone else was there who has some pics to show here.

Its interesting to read people value something at a particular price and we have seen the market (via auction/private sales)dictate wildly different values...so which is true indication of a cars value...the guesstimate or the one that has been on the market?? I would say market, just by using the insuring analogy they would use the available info at hand at that would be Market
Also 3 of the cars.... the 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe, 1931 Bugatti Royale Berline De Voyager and the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.... haven't been on the market since 91, so I wonder if they went for sale how much and would they have appreciated much??..of the 3 I believe that the Ferrari will have appreciated leaps & bounds and may even crack the $10mill mark

Attached HERE (http://www.shannons.com.au/shannons/shannons.nsf/ ShannonsAuctions/Current) is a link to the results of the Shannons auction that happened after the Sydney Motor Show. On the list of results is the 1967 Mustang of "Pete" Geoghegan which sold for the price of $320,000.

Don't know if this link will work, but it seems that 13 years after I had a ride in it the value was the same! It's a huge car, and sitting in the back I was a long way off the ground. My landlord told me that the main problem was a bent chassis, and that the entire body had been removed to straighten the rails. Not a cheap job, I imagine...... Certainly, from servicing and restoring Rollers, he owned a large 18th century mansion with attached stable blocks (I rented one of the converted stables), so there was obviously lots of money in it......
