Honestly now. If you were JUST starting out collecting, had done your research, calculated your budget, measured your available display space & WEREN'T collecting to re-sell, which scale would you concentrate on? I do 1/43 only but were there the variety available in 1/64 that there is in 1/43 I'd probably be into that scale. As is, fully half of my current collection isn't available in 1/64, so I'll stick to 1/43.

I collect 18's and 64's, but IF all models were produced in all scales, then in hindsight i would have gone for the 43's, mainly because of money and display room. As much as i love my 18's, i sometimes feel guilty that the $25K i have spent should have gone on the mortgage.

I like the physical size of the 18s, they look more purposeful and "real". Insofar as space limitations...build it and they will come!

i agree with markhm, i like the size of the 1/18. the bigger they are the more detailed and life like they get. 1/18 all the way!!!

The wallet & display space says 1/43. Everything else says 1/64, 1/43, & best of all 1/18. The more the merrier !!! :)

Seriously......if i was just starting out it would be strictly 1:43 (or smaller) for me. Simply because of the room all the cars take up!!
Cheers,
Timbo.

That's it Timbo. With Xmas gifts I'm up to 73 x 1/43. I can probably fit another 50 into my existing display shelves. In the same space I could only display 34/5 1/18. There are 2 in the house belonging to my Boys & I can see why people love them, but I just couldn't fit them in, let alone justify the cost.:)

1/18 only having started to build my "games" room will have plenty of space for my collection for many years to come.

1/18 is my prefered scale , always has been and still is so I wouldn't change the scale .
But in hindsight would have put off buying some of the Ertl , hotwheels , maisto etc and started collecting Biante earlier than I did .
Basically I missed some of the fantastic earlier Biante releases because at that time I wasn't willing to pay that much money per model .(bad decision):o

1/43. With the no. of rare and varied Rally Cars out there in 1/43 over 1/18, plus of course the costs involved in some of the code 3 rally cars I can easily say 1/43 wins hands down. Added to that the fact that there is not of yet a properly proportioned 1999 Subaru (AA is close but slightly too wide IMHO)

given hindsight 1/43. i have 2 large 6 shelf cabnets and built a 6f by 6f 4 self wall unit. on 1 cab shelf i get about 30 1/43 cars against 6-7 1/18! i now only buy the bathurst and collection cars in 1/18. all the rest in 1/43 with the odd 1/64.

Originally 1/18 was my choice of model. If I started collecting now, probably 1/43 would be my choice. Apart from the obvious space and dollar savings, there is also been a production quality improvement in recent years to make it really worthwhile.

I think this question depends on what your interests are. If you're a model collector, not collecting for investment (and price is no consideration, then I would have to insist on 1:8 or 1:12 scale purely for outstanding quality. But if you love your V8 Supercars or F1s, you're committed to a much larger collection, and limited to certain scales. Of the "smaller" scales, I reckon there's no better than 1:18.

definatly 1:18 i like the fact you can open them up and have a good look and see whats going on "under the hood" only being a young fella i didnt have a chance of seeingthe old classics in their time so i have to rely on my local shop to see the classics like the xy and chargers because all i have seen in my time are cars that have more fibreglass than actual metal.

Flicking through an old car magazine I saw an ad for a model Aston Martin at 4:7 scale! Don't see too many of that scale, and at $40,000 it's not surprising...
