German luxury carmaker, Audi, has teamed up with Bang & Olufsen for the Australasian debut of a state-of-the-art Advanced Sound System created for the all-new Audi S8 sports limousine.
This premiere will take place from 9.08am – 9.18am on Thursday 9 February 2006 at the Melbourne International Motor Show. The S8, with its B&O Advanced Sound System will then be on display to the public for the duration of the show from 9 – 19 February 2006.
The new Audi A8 W12 will also be on display at the Melbourne showcase, complete with the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System.
This exclusive system is the product of cooperation between Audi and Bang & Olufsen to produce a top-shelf sound solution for Audi’s high-end A8 and S8 models.
The fully-digital system from the Danish manufacturer redefines the standard yet again for demanding music lovers and has been adapted specifically to the conditions inside Audi’s A8 and S8 models, providing an unique musical experience while driving.
The system incorporates 14 active speakers, each energised by its own output stage. Two sets of amplifiers are used (a high performance amplifier and a Digital Signal Processor) to supply a combined output of more than 1,000 watts if required. The general rule is that the higher the output, the better the freedom from distortion in poor acoustic conditions.
The dynamics of the frequency response are calculated so that the music has the perfect tone. When programming the digital sound processor and selecting and positioning the speakers, consideration was given to factors including materials used inside the car, spatial dimensions, driving speed, the corresponding wind effect and friction between asphalt and tyres.
The speakers are housed in enclosed capsules so that their vibration behaviour can be precisely controlled. Their anodised aluminium grilles underscore Audi’s expertise with this material. The front tweeters use what is known as Acoustic Lens Technology and with their coated silk diaphragm domes, they act as perfect point sound sources. When the system is switched on, they extend out of the dashboard automatically.
Acoustic lenses
Acoustic Lens Technology* is licensed exclusively to Bang & Olufsen. It provides a wide horizontal sound dispersion of high frequencies in the car’s interior. The acoustic lenses automatically rise out of the dashboard when the sound system is engaged, ensuring an extremely detailed acoustic stage from any seat in the car. The Advanced Sound System employs Bang & Olufsen’s patented digital amplifier technology, ICEpower, which supplies the 14 active speaker units with an unprecedented 1,000 + watts of power.
Matches the leather seats
Each one of the loudspeaker grilles is produced from a single piece of aluminium and has been manually polished, laser engraved and coloured to match the leather seats in the concept car. They have been designed by Bang & Olufsen’s Chief Designer, David Lewis.
Another example of ‘Vorspung durch Technik’
The Audi S8 is by far the sportiest limousine in the luxury segment. Thanks to its trend-setting styling and technology, the S8 represents the highest level of automotive manufacturing in all areas.
The aluminium Audi Space Frame body, the quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the Multi Media Interface (MMI) are just three examples of the proverbial Audi "Vorsprung durch Technik".
The Audi S8 with its ultra high performance 5.2-litre FSI V10 engine will be launched in Australia in November 2006. Although pricing and specification have yet to be finalised, the S8 is expected to be priced around $250,000.
It is a high-performance luxury limousine developed for people wishing to express their individuality through the car they drive, communicating a message of success and symbolising a love of powerful performance.
“The partnership between Audi and Bang & Olufsen sets a new standard in the automotive luxury segment with this future-oriented Advanced Sound System,” said managing director of Audi Australia, Mr Joerg Hofmann.
“For Audi, this means our philosophy of Vorsprung durch Technik (or advancement through technology) is even experienced acoustically, coupled with innovative design, through our top-end Audi A8 and S8 models,” Mr Hofmann added.
The optional B&O Advanced Sound System for the 331 kW S8 will be priced around $15,500.
