How many collectors don't display their models? I am very skeptical of the number of people selling on ebay who claim the model for sale has never been displayed, but taken out of box for photo only. I honestly can not see the point of collecting models without displaying them. All my 1:43 CC with windows stay in the box and displayed this way. All 1:18 CC, Biante and AA in enclosed boxes, Dinkum Classics and all others are removed from their packaging and displayed in dust proof cabinets where I can view them every time I enter my bar room. What do other collector's think?

Mine have never been displayed due to circumstances. Should change in the next 12 months. I know I'll never be able to display them all at once.

i display all mine but i can see problems arising if the collection gets to big..another guy i work with has his stacked in his garage every where he just has far too many to display.. i too am skeptical of the claim never displayed only taken out for photo, or never removed from box... how would u know it was in 1 piece if u never looked at it

I have all the 1:18 ford that biante have made ( bar 64,65 moffat and DJ first sierra) and never displayed them, most of them have never been out of the box. I have 2 of most models sometimes 3 of them. No room to display. waiting on rennovations to finish.

Most of mine have never been on display...I can only display 30-40 1:43's at a time and 4-5 1:18's (but only 1:18's in a window box:rolleyes:). This is due to a lack of display area...

I don't necessarily like it that way, but that is life...I don't see the point in not buying any models just because I can't necessarily display them the minute they get home...

I know quite a few others who have cupboards full of models that have never been displayed for various reasons...from lack of display area, pure speculators, to hiding from disrespectful kids/visitors:eek:

There was a poll on here (last year?) and almost half the posters at the time said that they could display very little or none of their collections!

Cheers

Mine are all in boxes, some have never been out at all. I dont have anywhere to display them yet but when i do i wont put them all out as i dont think i will have enough room too.

I just sold 3 models on ebay but didnt mention whether or not they had been on display. Like wanyo when i get my new house built it will a dedicated area to displaying them and may even be a feature when we design the house, Ikea have some great cabinets that will fit nicely into the walls with low level light kits.

I never physically displayed my models (I say 'displayed' as I sold most of them) due to limited space - living in a studio flat, argh - and that I couldn't afford nor justify any sort of display cabinet till I moved out. And I guess like most here, I'm a perfectionist and didn't want to settle for anything cheap or mediocre to display them in. Not even for the time being. Or maybe it's just me - dunno!

So they merely sat at one end of the room - sounds odd, but I could still appreciate + enjoy looking at them as a whole, grouped together/stacked on one another, regardless or not they were in closed packaging on not. Quite often, I'd remove the model from the box, but never from its base or styrofoam packaging it sat in.

That said, I considered myself a serious collector in every sense of the word. So I can only suggest, like Wayno mentioned, some collectors don't display/remove/unscrew their models due to whatever circumstance.

You can display, be ceative, it does not have to take up so much space especialy if you have not got to many models.
When building, planning, renovating allow yourself the space.
You live only once, and to hell with the archectual minimalistic clean look.
Other Members of the household have to realise you are living there as well and should be able to have your little part to be you.
I have at the moment well over 700 1/18 scale car models permanently on show, sideways displayed!(purely for MY OWN pleasure), never mind all the other model scales and bits of interest.
3 tier sideways is actualy the most economical way of displaying, it takes only 440mm including the sliding doors!
My better half has maybe 4/5 thousand cat statues, cat cups, cat watches, cat clocks, cat plates etc,etc also on permanent display all through the house.
So it can be done, you can make your own envoirment to suit you.
It takes time and efford, but if you want it, you can do it.
If you cannot display/admire it,sometimes? what's the use of having it?

I have 90% of mine bubblewraped in unopened boxes . My display area holds around 150 cars & the rest are packed away for a rainy day.

That sounds about what I'm going to be aiming for for a couple of reasons. Most importantly it will keep the wife happy:D and it will also give me the chance to change the cars every six months to keep the display 'fresh'.

Partly the reason I started collecting 1/43's. I can get 80 years worth of F1 World Champs in my new cabinet. (if I live that long!) and 42 years worth of 1/18 Bathurst Winners in my other shelf unit now that I have added more shelves. Any thing else such as my 1/43 Brock collection will go in my original display cabinet. I cannot see myself buying to many 1/18's. Not because I want to but because they take up so much room. I would however love to get a few Exoto's or CMC's later on though.

It's not a case of allowed or not allowed for me, it's a cash flow issue that doesn't allow me to purchase an appropriate dispay cabinet...and a time issue where I don't have any to build one:rolleyes:

My better half keeps telling me off for NOT having them displayed...

A question though for those questioning mine and others stored collections...

I have a stamp collection, a poster collection, a coin collection, a book collection, a magazine collection, a CD collection, a photo collection (do you get the picture, I need help:eek:)...my point being, none of these are displayed either! Why the necessity to display to enjoy? When I want joy I pull the appropriate collection out and spend hours looking...the few models I do have on display only get a cursory glance from me as I walk by...(this reminds me of the Colourbond ad that Wayne loves;))

Some speak of collecting via the internet as a double joy, as you get joy when you order/win an auction and a second joy when the model arrives! I get multiple joys, every time I re-discover models I had forgotten about...

I only have 1 model displayed (Skaife '99). The rest (about 20) are stored in a cupboard. I'm only renting at the moment so I dont want to get a nice cabinet only to risk damage when I eventually move so I'll wait until I buy a joint before displaying them properly.

Cheers,

Paul.

I keep all my 1/43's and 1,64's in the display case and box they come in..

I display all my 1/18's in a cabinet, but this is no problem as i only have 28..

27 v8supercars and 1 formula 1 car..

Not much point having them if you don't see them, a bit like having a hot car and rarely driving it..... I keep my 1:64 in a TRAX cabinet and they fit really well, and my other ones I keep in special glass ones made by a fish tank manufacturer about 2.5ft long and 1 foot wide. My 1:43 are in boxes on the shelf for display. Gotta see them otherwise why have them. Mind you my 2 year old found my MHDT A9X as I was distratced from photographing it almost giving me a heart attack....

I have gone for nearly 18 months without dispalying my models apart from a couple.
First we packed them all away when we were selling our house, now have a couple out while renting.
That will all change on 13th June when we shift into new house, they are all coming out into a room only for diecasts, have display cabinets made at the moment, as well as book cases for all the racing books.

Sorry if I offended Leigh, it was just my viewpoint on my own models, I love seeing them and would hate to see them packed away. Same if I had a hot car instead of the family hack, built to drive but again in my opinion....:>

Mine are all boxed and have only been opened to check that there are no broken bits on arrival but like some of the others it's purely down to circumstances, I have a lot of PA gear which unfortunately takes up a lot of space but planning a move this year (dang interest rates) and hopefully will be able to bring some of the models out onto display on a rotating basis..

....... I honestly can not see the point of collecting models without displaying them.....?

Got 10 out of 80 on display..not the room and dont think I will have it in the future...also not having em displayed ensures (around my household) accidental accidents are avoided when displayed...regarding the above point IMO collecting isnt all about displaying I could have stoped at 10 models but its like an addiction, of not missing out on those memories, and then paying thru the nose later on...at least I can pull em out and enjoy admiring them when I have the time

Cheers

My theory is as follows...Majority of 'For Sale' items listed as Never out of box/all straps, wires in place/ never displayed etc etc are usually the remnants of the other 7 examples of any "possibly more popular with collectors" models which are purchased by Speculators/Investors ?? Not counting Retailers of course, & I do know of a couple of asute collectors who will purchase such a model X 2 as a means of generating cash flow for their future purchases...( ie keep one & sell the spare, hopefully at a profit, to pay for later item). Also feel that 99% of sellers use such descriptions as a means of showing the models to be "as arrived from the Manufacturer", & not dropped, scratched, faded, bent, dented, molested, converted or played with in the sand pit by rug rats. :D

i'm only new to collecting the model cars and have all mine in seperate display cases. as soon as i get them i take them out of the box, marvel at the detail and them put them directly into a perspex display case. a mate of mine just puts his exposed on a breakfast bar....arghh!!!. i buy them so i can look at them but i make sure they are well protected. i also make sure they dont come into contact with direct sunlight as over time, well you know..... i understand some people's reluctance to remove their collectibles form their packaging. i also collect Star wars merchandise and take them out the box as i get them. my point is, if you buy toys enjoy looking at them. why spend all that money to look at artwork on the box espicailly if the contents is fully enclosed and does not have a display window on the packaging? opening a box that does not have tamper seal is not going to diminish it's value over time.

My message is take'm outta da box, keep the box, get a display cabinet and reap the reward/enjoyment.
When time comes to move on, put them back in and dispose/sell/give away/trade to greener pastures.

i think everyone has a valid reason for not displaying model's excpet for the people who buy and store for no other reason than to sell for profit later.
mine collect a bit of dust, but im not gona lock em away. i brought them so i could look at them. not much point in having them otherwise.

I must admit that I too are a closet diecast collector. Hence why I am selling off some of mine as I am sick to death of having so many wonderful cars & no where to display them :o

To be honest I only have 5 1/18 on display in my office (yet they are still fully packaged - window faced boxes) & meaning that there are so many waiting all boxed up with no where to go.

I know one day I will have a massive 8m wide cabinet in my shed, but to date the shed is not even purchased, let alone constructed.

cheers

Mine are still boxed and stored so my 2.5 year old demolition ball (bless him) can't get to them. They do however get taken out and ogled often. One day a nice dust free cabinet in the theatre room.;) Maybe 2 cabinets if im lucky;)

I'm like a lot of others in that my current living arrangements don't allow me to display as I'd like to so almost all of my collection is still safely tucked away in boxes, but I do live in hope that one day down the track they will get displayed as they should.

The other problem is saving the money for a display cabinet, I always end up spending the cash on more models...:D

I have a heap of models in my personal collection. I have most of them on display, but lack of room now prevents me from displaying them all. I hate having them packed away, so when (or if) I am ever able to get me own house I will most definately display them all. 95% of my models are 1/43 scale

I could never leave my models in their boxes- but soon i will probably have to as i am slowly running out of room- ive got enough for approx 6 1:18's I think that if you leave them in their boxes to hide away there is no point having them.:) :)
