I find myself with a free day in Melbourne this Friday.

Can anyone recommend any motorsport based places to visit?

Apparently FPR do tours out at their HQ in Broady - there's info on the either the FPV or FPR website, I can't remember which.

Otherwise the Ford discovery centre in Geelong is worth a look, but there is very little on offer for Holden fans....there is Tom's cafe` at Clayton, but other than being a glorified tuck shop there's not a lot there.

There's always a walk around the Albert GP circuit.....

I did a tour of the HSV factory which was free, just need to pre-arrange it. I believe that you can stick your head in Larry Perkins workshop these days, which is his effort of being more fan friendly, which is in the Morrabbin Airport complex.

Doesnt Lindsay Fox have a display of all his cars somewhere?

The other place to have a look is a Dutton's in Richmond, they normally have some nice cars there for sale, plus its just down the road from the HSV store on Chapel St.

Take a drive down to Philip Island and check out the Motor Museum there. Some great stuff in there.
It's a nice drive too and a spot of lunch in Cowes would go down nicely I reckon.:)
Cheers,
Tony.

Hearns Hobbies is situated beside Flinders St station at the Elizabeth Street exit (it's beside the station and you have to walk down stairs, apart from that there used to be one on Swanston Street just up from Flinders Street (Victorian Hobby Centre) and there was one down a laneway off Elizabeth Street as well I think (only a small shop but chock full of diecast)

Model Mania hasn't been in the Flinders Lane location for a couple of years;) The address Tony gives is correct...but approach from the South, because you'll walk past it otherwise;)

Lindsay Foxes "Classic Car" display is open most work-days to the public...BUT...you must pre-book and the minimum booking is for 20 people (IIRC)...so in otherwords, it is technically closed:(

Good advice that! I went looking for them last time I was in Melbourne, and although I had a pretty good idea where they were, I walked straight past them. I went to the end of the street, turned around and approached from the Flinders station end, then found them easily......:o

yeah i was going to go there when i went to melb a couple of years ago and was very dissapointed that you had to pre-book and be in a large group.

Model Mania is a good place to have a look,, it's about 5 mins away from were we usually stay when going to victoria, the only prob with Model Mania, that i found was that they were more expensive than the first time we wen't

Thanks Lads,
All useful ideas.
Can anyone tell me if Larry's workshop is still at Moorabbin Airport, his website shows the address as Mentone?

Not strictly motorsport related, but if the weather's clear, make your way up to the observation deck at the top of the Rialto - I easily chew up a couple of hours up there each time I'm in Melbourne :)

Also, you can readily make out the GP circuit at Albert Park, so it is motorsport related in a way ;)

The gp track is slowly starting to take shape as well, so is well worth a look.

I wish I was, then it would make life a lot cheaper for me;) :( :D

Actually I re-read the start of this thread & it said this Friday & Phil was telling me at practice tonight that he's book out that night, so it's not an option...sorry :o
