Hi does anyone know of a place where i can get floor standing display cabinets for about 20 1:18 scale model cars? Preferrably steel frame, glass shelves, mirrored back, enclosed with a lock?
I'm in melbourne....

Try IKEA on Nepean Highway. There selection used to be pretty good. Or on the other hand a D.I.Y. job is at hand. See your local Hardware for some dowled 480mm wide x 2 metres in height sheets in Pine. Perpex front, Sliding doors at the back. And check out your local Glazier for some seconds at around 6mm thick.
It's not Rocket Science, but with a bit planning you'll get there in the end.

not sure if this will help you out much, but once i started collecting i knew i was going to need a cabinet. I looked around for ages and couldnt really find something that suited me, im not great with the tools but my freind and i decided to give it a go building one. Cut a long story short, mine is 130cms high, 130cms in length and 40cms depth. It was simple to make - timber sides nice timber top, skirting top n bottom, with a full mirror back, 6 glass shelves with stainless brackets holding the glass. I suppose it s hard to describe, but its great - keeps dust out and has flour light in the top. In all honesty it cost around $300 to build, we were lucky finding a piece of glass at a demolition site. I enjoyed making it, i got exactly what i wanted so possibly u should consider drawing up some plans.
I would enjoy making another but it depends on how much u wanna spend. Some furniture shops have cheap stuff, but it depends on the individual.
Cheers

If time is an issue then grab your local weekend rag (newspaper) and find some store closures ie:jewellers, model shops etc...
And hopefully you'll pick up a bargain.
Take the cap off the sights, Happy Hunting.

Check out the pics at my site for the cabinet I had made. I need to update the photos to show one of the shelves with 3 cars on one side... it has 5 shelves plus the bottom of the cabinet. so all in all it can fit around 30 cars on the 5 shelves :)

you are all very helpful people...what a nice little forum this is.. hehe ...nah it looks like i'll have to make one if i give up looking for one...either way, i must have my cabinet!!! cos my boxes stacked up are begining to look unorderly, also dont want to damage the boxes. If i do make one i'll take a snap and post it up here....and i will keep an eye out for store closures, but how often will i find an add in the paper? trading post might have one....hmmm...off to hunt...ciao

KiddCrash, try under Office Equipment, or something like that in the trading post, can't remember exactly what it is. I got mine out of the trading post for a $100 but had to pull it apart and paint the frame black because it was pink, looks great now and will hold about 24 1/18 cars.
