View Full Version : plastic bags could be a thing of the past

I have heard a whisper from the GSR camp that the air intake on the new BA racecar will not be set up in the lower part of the front air scoop but it will be mounted at the back of the bonnet in the plenum panel... Unfortunately this might mean that they will have to run the standard bonnet on the cars instead of the XR8 bonnet due to the air displacement that it will cause... It is still in testing & hopefully they can get around using the plain bonnet & go with the XR8 one!!!... Harder for those darn plastic bags to get in :D
The air for the radiator and oil coolers will still have to go through the front of the car, which means that it is still possible for a plastic bag to obstruct the path of the air which cools the motor.
The air for the airbox only effects the air going into the engine itself, and has no effect on the engine as far as overheating goes.

To Fords R Us
I heard during the Bathurst telecast that the
new BA Racer will use a flat bonnet, not the
XR8 one with the boldge in the middle of it.
The reasoning is that with the extra height
of the XR8 bonnet, it would allow the teams to
"fool around" with the engine giving it greater
clearances for manifolds etc.
Some others here one the forum might be
able to elaberate a little bit more on
this.

Thanks for clearing that point up Dazz... I thought it sounded a bit hard to believe... But I do know that they are testing the bonnets for the aerodynamics & how they will perform compared to the standard bonnet.

Damian,
when did they say this, as frankly i don't remember hearing it during the telecast ?
I've also heard that the V8 supercar Falcon would be raced as the GT Falcon, rather than the XR8 (still to be confermed though) & so the bulge in the bonnet is a very critical, important factor in this. I hope it races with the bulge as the Barra Racer that was shown at Bathurst looked awesome!!!!!!
cheers.

G'Day Brchi17,
It was when the BA racer had finished it's parade
lap of the mountain and was parked on the start/finish line with everyone standing around it.
Mark Ostler made the comment about the boldge after he saw Mark Skaife and a few other Holden Racers pointing to the bonnet of the car.
If anyone has taped this let us know.

Damian
Reference to the bonnet was made but not in an official way.
I would suggest that they will probably use the XR8 bonnet (as long as it is not a disadvantage) but may have to have an inlet manifold which will clear a std bonnet.
Personally I think if Ford have designed a better bonnet they should be allowed to use it. Although these days with parity being such a big issue I guess it's a bit hard.

ok, im making a claim of ignorance before i say anything, becuase i have no idea... but if its a production car race... wouldnt the production bonnet be ok to race with extra clearance regardless....??? or do i simply have no idea what im on about?
The V8 Supercars are not a production race car as such, and because of this have many components which are not standard on the road car they are based upon.
With the parity debate in the V8's, if the bonnet is shown to be of an advantage then it will no doubt be changed, or the inlet manifold will have to be able to clear a std bonnet even though the XR8 bonnet is used.

Dazz,
why would Ford worry about the parity thing. Look at the parity of V8 Supercar at present (before we open that Pandora's box regarding parity, I'm having my say).
If it's the XR8 or GT as the base for the racecar who cares!, if it has a bugle on the road car, then the racecar must have it.
It took Ford soooo long to get approval for the 4 headlights of the AU, so I'm sure they're not going to comprise on a flat bonett special XR8/GT racecar.
cheers.

Oastler commented that the Holden teams had already raised concerns over the bonnet bulge because this means that they could play with the breathing efficency of the motor, or increase trumpet lengths under the bonnet, Oastlers words, not mine

if my memory is correct, Oastler said some Holden drivers made comment about the bulge on the bonnet, and they were told it is cosmetic, there is no extra room under the bonnet to fiddle with things
