In a fortnight it will be 12 months since the passing of 2 Australian icons in Steve Irwin and Peter Brock.
I thought I would start a thread for comments on the thoughts 12 months on.
Another reason for the thread was to inform those loyal Brock fans that in Auto Action this week it was announced that next weeks edition will be a 72 page Brock Special dedicated to the man 12 months on. It will on the stands at RRP of $6.95. Could be a great read and collectors item. Apparently there will be interviews etc reflecting on the past 12 months from selected sports stars and Brock friends and family.
Get in early for a copy.

I'm two ways on what BCC did. For the "real" tributes, I agree it is a disgrace, but I did see somewhere on the web pictures of some truly disgusting and derogatory comments and graffitti over the top of the tributes...it was more than likely these that were the reason for the re-paint...

Does Bathurst City Council have no remorse ?
What an absolute disgrace to paint over the thousands of handwritten messages in memory to Peter across Mt Panorama's Skyline. This act has made me (along with no doubt many of you) furious.
If the council had a problem with them being there for safety, or whatever reason(s), why couldnt the concrete barriers be relocated to the Motor Racing Museum ?
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=288651
Furious, angry, hurt, upset - and to think that the Bathurst Council actually recieves hundreds of thousands of dollars by having us race fans in town for a week - NO MORE THATS FOR SURE.

If that was the case then I can understand why this was done. I think I'm more hurt that people would deface what was a great tribute in my eyes.

Bathurst Regional Council says public safety and a desire to establish a lasting tribute to motor racing legend Peter Brock ,are legitimate reasons for a decision to paint over tributes hand written by fans on the Brock Skyline wall at the top of Mount Panorama.
The “Brock’s Skyline” wall became an unofficial ‘memory book’ which attracted thousands of messages from fans in the aftermath of Peter Brock’s death in September last year.
Mayor Norm Mann said the most appropriate way to maintain the integrity of memory of the man known as ‘Peter Perfect’, and the safety of the iconic Mount Panorama racing circuit was to remove the messages which were becoming faded by the elements and causing traffic concerns as people literally stood in the middle of the road to either write on the wall or take photos of it.
“Council is very aware of the value associated with the heartfelt messages and sentiments written upon Brock’s Skyline and for that very reason chose to preserve it in a manner befitting a man of Peter Brock’s stature,” Cr Mann said.
“The fact of the matter is that the wall is located on a public road which creates legitimate safety concerns for people wanting to access it,” Cr Mann said.
“It would be irresponsible for Council not to act on an area of the circuit where there is a known public safety issue.
“The messages were painted only after a professional photographer had captured the images of the memory wall which will form a lasting tribute to Peter Brock’s memory.”
The tribute will be located in the soon to be completed Peter Brock Memorial Wing of the National Motor Racing Museum at Mount Panorama.
Plans are also being made to have copies available for purchase by fans with the proceeds going towards a planned memorial in the gardens of the National Motor Racing Museum.
“At the end of the day Mount Panorama is a world class motor racing circuit and needs to be preserved as such, just as I’m sure Peter Brock would have wanted.”
Samples of the photographic tribute of the memorial wall on Brock’s Skyline can be viewed at the Mount Panorama website www.bathurstregion.com.au/mountpanorama

I dont wish to start a slanging match or a discussion on wether right or wrong regarding this subject ( i have my views on this in another post )
but footy this person was the goverment contractor as in the situation of sudden death / fatal accident etc is called in by the police on behalf of the coroner.
I myself find both the painting over the wall and the cutting down of the two trees at the accident site quite bewildering.
what is it with the powers to be they see the possibility of another accident in these areas and they go from one extreme to another.
got me stuffed / wont even try to think this out.
take the accident site for example both the sappling that Peter hit first and the main tree have been cut of at ground level whilst other trees on this bend that have claimed lives and caused very serious injuries have been left .
( please refer to my posts under RIP Peter Brock )
I have been frequently thinking of both Steve and Peter in the last few days wondering how the first anniversarys will be noted
Hopefully goverment officials will not try to use public senterment to try and gain brownie points.
I still to this date have not had a reply to my email to Kim Chance the minister for agriculture here in W.A regarding a tribute for Peter Brock to be situated in Forrest Place where Targa West started from last Sept, Mr Chance also competed in this race.
Australia lost two great sons last September my thoughts are with their families during this trying time

I was up at the mountain at Easter for the 12 hour & was talking to the manager of the Bathurst Racing Museum & he told me then that the wall was going to be painted over due to morons going up there & defacing it & that it was becoming a dangerous spot as cars were stopping people getting out & taking shots & nearly getting knocked over.
He also told me that a photographer had been commissioned to take shots of the wall & that it would be displayed in the museum & that the photo would be made availiable to the public.
I will also brag here & say that when I was up there in July the wall had been painted over & the only memorial left was the one my car club - Monaro Car Club of NSW left up there which was a vinyl sticker which we put up there on the Sat after.
When I rang BCC I was told that as we instigated the memorial cruise up there last year & that Peter got his first & last podiums in a Monaro up there it was only fitting that it was left there.
I will be cruising up there on the 8/9 in my 75 HJ GTS Coupe just like last year & I will spend a bit of time up at Brocky's spot remembering all the great races I saw in the 34 years I went up for the great race.
I look forward to once again making the trip up to the holy grail in 6 weeks time to camp at Sulman for the week & watch the greatest sporting event in Oz & to reflect on the greatest driver this world has ever seen - Peter "Legend" Brock - R.I.P. Gone but you will never be forgotten.

Hello again to all,
the Sunday Times here in Perth today had a spread on Brocky and Mick Hone/ the accident and how family members first heard about it.
this was well done apart from how they would start an article and then finish on another page.
it was reported that Mick Hone along with Julie Bamford and Lewis Brock will visit the crash site.
this site should be quite picturesque at this time of year after the good recent rains , the two dams in the paddock behind should be full and colourful wildflowers starting to show thru out lush paddocks.
Peter would have loved this area
if visiting this site please give it the resect it deserves not only for Peter but also for the others who have had their lives taken or trajically changed by accidents on this road
eg the small tribute to Wasp a motorcyclist killed is only metres up the hill from where the tree and sappling that took Brocky once stood .
i will be visit this site within the next 9 days/ something i need to do and when doing so will bow my head in honour
this will also be done on behalf of those forum members who cant get over here, just as i ask any going to Bathurst to think of others.

Hi again to all,
tonight i ask myself ,where has that twelve months gone ?
got up early this morning quick bite to eat, coffee grab my Richards / Richards Bathurst car, the certificate for the 79 A9X and the back drop for my 1/64 78 A9X and head off to the city.
parking at a nearby train station i catch a train in [ no parking or traffic problems]
10 mins later i'm there in Forrest Place its starting to buzz as the great variances of cars start to flow in.
soon the area is full not only with cars , drivers and fans but also many city workers having a quick glance on their way to work , not forgetting the construction workers high above on the post office.
Today was not only the start of Targa West it was held in fitting memory of Peter Brock all drivers and navigators were given a small sticker celebrating Brocky to worn proudly on their driving suits .
Jim Richards always the true gentleman mixed with all ,
signing the many items presented to him [ including mine listed above]
Lewis Brock , Julie Bampton and Mick Hone all representing Peter carried out interviews with the press and mixed with many.
Spoke to Mick [ hell of a nice guy] regarding his injuries and recollection of the bend and Peters love of the Daytona and how he and Julie visited the crash site at sunrise this morning and how doing this has helped them both.
Lewis and Julie waved off the first cars followed other VIPs including our Bev and Richard.
Just as Richard waved off the last car which happened to be Jim Richards it started to drizzle.
i then had a great chat to Bev [ a top lady ] look out sandown she's on the way.
cant understand how she has lost the term biante staff to be relegated to member on the forum , hey Richard how about biante founder or biante staff retired , sounds better.
the battery on my camera needed recharging and my wife required assistance with a stand she was trying to erect.
so after a quick visit to see my nephew who works in the city i head home while recharging the battery i fix the stand my wife was having trouble with.
the rain is getting heavier so this puts aside any chance of getting to a spectator spot to view the rally .
i decide that Mick Hones idea to visit the crash site early to avoid any congestion and give privacy viable ,as i am working tomorrow the actual anniversary date.
up the Reid Hwy left into Toodjay road over red hill and left into Obrien Road [ this area is truely beautiful ] after some time i came across signs on the left warning of a traffic hazard ahead and the speed has now been reduced to 40 KMH.
i park my car in the area just up hill from the site and walk down the hill ,
it is just starting to rain and there is a chap bent over what appears to be a small clump of tree , but as i get closer i soon realise this is regrowth from the 100mm high stump that was once a tree then a shrine.
this chap is trying to fix a stainless steel memorial plate to this stump which already has brass numbers 05 mounted.
as this chap is installing this plate a screw broke and he has no replacement and he asks if i have one we go up to my car and have a look none available so i ask him for his screwdriver and remove one from my door sill .
he cant get over this but as i say i can get another qiute easily and your problem is fixed.
he introduces himself as Blondy and is staying on the property behind for the weekend and was one of the few who witnessed the accident twelve months before.
the rain becomes quite heavy and we are joined by another in seach of possible answers
Blondy wanders off back to the property [soaked] and myself and this other chap stay at the site soon a ute with 3 onboard goes past and stops further down at the "new" shrine area.
this chap and i wander down to this area where one of the utes occupants is a ch10 camera man filming the area.
after some time i am on my own the only sound rain drops /running creek/ sheep bleeting and birds
[this is truly a beautiful spot please don't ruin it]
it is now i stand near the stump and thou iam not religious say a prayer for those who asked and mentioned the names of others who cant be here ,finishing with for all biante forum members.
today helped me greatly
tomorrow is another thing as i start work in 6 hrs

Yeah my renewal is sitting completed on the fridge in the Brock Bar & I have to admit I'm having 2nd thoughts as to whether I renew or not after what I saw on both shows in their interviews with Bev & Julie.
I was lucky enough to be introduced to Julie by Brocky at Bathurst 05 & they both signed my young bloke's Brock visor. She seems nice enough but I still love Bev she is a beautiful person who deserves better than what has happened since that fateful day.
I think I will let my renewal sit awhile & see what happens.
