Yes, I know it was only a design study, but does anyone know anything about these 2 cars? The only info in Unique Cars was that there was one blue and one black XB coupe built, with a NACA duct behind the side window and a 427 under the bonnet. Plus GT spoilers and vents......Shame Ford got cold feet!

Sorry to bring up an old thread but why would they use a 427 for?.So the body had the "bodykit" or GT kit on them or going to have them?

The picture (which I don't have to hand at present) showed a blue XB hardtop looking a lot like a custom GT, and which apparently had a 427 (not in photo). There was another built in black, presumably to similar specs. That's all I know. Yet another Ford styling exercise, like the Bill Bourke Special XW I suppose.

Nick,
Between 1974 - 78 I owned a XB GT Hardtop, which was maintained and serviced by Murray Carter.
I can remember on Saturday mornings when I used to get fuel, that one of Murray's mates or Murray's sons mate had a pale blue XB GT Hardtop, it had Phase 5 painted along the doors. It was really something to see. I don't know if it was real or a mock up, but it was awesome. Lowered, big tyres to fill the guards, a very unique spoiler on the boot. If you can find your picture, I can still remember the image of this car, even though, the old memory is not as good as it was.

I've had a squiz for the picture but can't find it at present, but the car in the picture was pale blue and had Phase 5 written on it! It must be the same one. It was sold off with a 351 in it - shame, as the 427 would have been interesting!

I am going back on memory only but i remember a Phase 5 falcon being tested on motor mag ( it was modern motor in those days)
It was an Xd silverin colour and it had two fins in top of the front guards. Circa 1979/80.

Frosty, I meant to say that if it was the same car then it was real all right, in the sense that it was a genuine Ford vehicle. But the "Phase 5" thing would have been an XB marketing gimmick in this case, as opposed to the original Phase V XA hardtop (which I guess never got much past the ideas stage), which would have been the latest in the Ford Touring Car programme if it had ever been built.

After the demise of the XA GT-HO "Phase IV" I think Ford (and maybe dealers who produced their own specials) saw "Phase" as a magic marketing word, and so there was the Phase 5 XB hardtop, the Phase 4 XC sedan, this Phase 5 XD that you mention, Inter, and maybe several others. None of them official - either styling exercises by Ford, or tart-up jobs by dealers, to shift a body-kitted Falcon!

Nick,
I think Australian Muscle Car Magazine also published a photo of the XB Phase V Coupe in one of the old issuses.

I have all the issues as well, and if it was in there then I missed it! Issue 5 had the Phase IV, but I don't remember the XB that had been in Unique Cars.
