I was just shown this site and thought some people (Jager) would be interested.

It has listed every winner of the 24hr race with a picture of each car which could be a good reference to check on your 1:43 winners collection against.

Hi Richard

Many thanks ! I have approx 30 LeMans winners so I'm just waiting on the promised 1930's Alfa's from IXO, the 1978 Renault and 1991 Mazda promised by Minichamps and hope to be able to pick up a Minichamps model of the '94 Dauer Porsche 962 for less than the A$ 400 I saw the last one go for on Ebay ! Another problem is th absence of any models of the 1960 to 1965 winning Ferrari's.

I plan to display the collection at the forthcoming Model Auto Expo in Perth on May 19th.

Have almost finished reading the book "Legends of Speed' and it has made me curious of the LeMans 24hr race and the cars available in 1/43.

I did not realise so many Aussies had raced there. I have not really followed this race, but after reading stories about it, it has me interested. Better late than never ;)

Some amazing cars have raced here and I would like to start a winners and aussies collection in 1/43. Does anyone have a list of winners that have been released ( I assume over 30 from Jagers previous post)? I have seen the list of Aussie drivers cars that have been released (quite a few). Possibly something else for me to start collecting over time - oh the pain/joy!!!

Not sure how many people collect LeMans cars on this forum???

Thanks for the link. I've always been jealous of the 1:43 cars available from Le Mans. I just fish we could get some more 24hr winners in 1:18.

I love the 18 scale cars but I think for the amount of cars that could be made I think the 43 scale will be better (cheaper ;)) - although they seem pretty rare in Aus and the ones overseas can get expensive on shipping.

The winning cars I think have been made are (21):

1924
1929
1930
1931
1934
1937
1939
1957
1959
1967
1968
1969
1974
1975
1978
1980
1988
1999
2000
2001
2002

I collect Le Mans (and sports cars from other races) cars, but don't collect every winner for instance. If it's a good-looking car in a good livery then I'll collect it, but concentrating on 1:18 limits how many I can get - not too many made so far! I'm waiting to see what else Minichamps make in 1:18, after their two Porsche 956 releases - I know the 1982 Rothmans car is coming, and I'm hoping for a plain white presentation 956. Plus all the 962s - Shell, Dauer, Blaupunkt etc. I'm amazed, given the prices of the 1:43 Dauer 962s, that Minichamps have yet to even hint that they're making them in 1:18.

There hasn't been many released in our scale has there Nick? I've got the AutoArt C type, the Kyosho BMW LMR and of course the Bentley. I just can't bring myself to get the Maisto Audi's as I'm hoping for a better version to come along.
I missed the Schuppan Porsche as it came it whilst I was on holiday and it was pretty much sold out when I realised it was available.
Will have to make sure I have computer access next time I go away!
Oh yeah. What is the other 956 released?

Nick Short

The first one was the blue Kenwood Andretti car, 3rd at Le Mans 1983. It raised my hopes that there would then be a flood of these classic racers, plus the 962 that followed, but so far nothing much........

I have the Maisto Audi "Limited Edition" R8R (although it doesn't seem that limited!) and their Porsche GT1 98, plus various UT Porsche GT1 and GT2s, as nobody else made them. But it's really AutoArt and Minichamps that I want, and they're not exactly rushing to release stuff! Bentley Le Mans winner, Toyota GT-One (but no Nissan R390), and that pretty much ends my list of cars of interest released so far. I'd like to see the XJ220C in 1:18, but despite being quite significant (it won, before being disqualified), there's no sign of it. Same with the Group B rally cars I keep harping on about - I see Kyosho are releasing one more 037, but where the later 4WD supercars are I don't know.......

Nick Short
13-01-2005, 12:42 PM
....and while I'm at it, where are the road versions of these cars? Road versions of Le Mans cars, plus the Group B rally cars have been made by various manufacturers in 1:43, so where are they in 1:18? I don't want to have to take a valuable 1:18 race or rally car and pay someone to paint it for me!

The winning cars I think have been made are (21):

To date there have been 56 LeMans winners modelled in 1:43 scale. The only post war winners not modelled by a quality company are the 1960 - 62 Ferrari's, the 1971 Porsche 917 (available from Brumm) and the '76 Porsche. I'm please to say I've acquired all 56, which includes models from Minichamps, Quartzo, IXO, Bang, Best, Art Models, Max Models & Trofeu.

All others are available - albeit at a cost. Expect to pay $200 - $300 each for some of them, such as the Minichamps '74 Matra, Minichamps 'New Man' Porsche 956 ('84 & '85), the Quartzo Rothmans Porsche 962's ('86 & '87), the Minichamps '94 Dauer or the Minichamps '95 McLaren. Some of these will be available from IXO over the next year or two as part of its LeMans series.

There are also close to 40 cars driven by Australian drivers at Le Mans that have been modelled. Of these the '61 Aston Martin Zagato driven by Lex Davidson & Bo Stilwell (by Vitesse) is the hardest to find - I've seen one sell for A$244 !

Thanks for the reply Jager.

I have not even heard of some of the brands mentioned. I might just try and get the iXO models - they seem the ones floating around, plus not real keen on paying huge dollars for some, especially if 1 day iXO will make them.

Do you have a list of the cars released that were driven by the Aussies?

I created a spreadsheet today with all the winners and what models iXO have released and are going to release (from info gathered from the Biante site). Even then I have 31 models as being released or in development, with the odd 1 from Autoart, minichamps and Onyx. The minichamps and autoart cars are a bit more expensive compared to the iXO models though.

I notice on the Biante website that the Autoart 1984 Audi Quattros of Blomquist and Mikkola now say "In Production". Hopefully they're getting closer.....:)

Does anyone have the Universal Hobbies Porsche 962 "Shell" car? I'd get one if it was any good and Minichamps weren't going to make one! I've seen pictures and they look OK, but there's no substitute for seeing one in the flesh. Perhaps Admin can persuade the Minichamps boss to make some 962s next time he's out for a beer with him.

The Lister driven by Mark Skaife and sponsored by Adidas and the Newcastle United soccer team is only available at present as a handbuilt kit but must be high on the list of models to be made by Spark.

What you probably saw was the 1:32 Slot Car which has been made by Fly - I think I saw it at Stanbridges. Otherwsie you might have seen the model produced from the Starter/Pm kit but is definitely hasn't been done as a diecast.

Unfortunately Nick, we're in the minority, most collectors want the 1:43 cars made first. I was thinking about buying a couple of the Le Mans cars in 1:18 (the Kenwood and Rothmans Porsche's), but I knew if I bought one or two then I would buy more and more...and it would never stop!!! :D

I'll certainly buy any 1:18 956s and 962s they make in attractive liveries (Rothmans, Shell, Blaupunkt, New Man etc - all the famous ones!), as I think they'll look awesome lined up. Sadly I think I'll be waiting a very long time before I get anything like a long line of them in my cabinet. I see the Stars and Stripes 956 is on its way, but it's not one I like the look of, so I'll be waiting a bit longer.....

I'll take ANY LeMans winner in 1/18. Oh, plus a Brock 956 for good measure!

It seems very odd, given the way collectors bite each others' arms off for certain 1:43, and the prices they fetch, that manufacturers just don't make the same models in 1:18. A black Dauer Porsche 962 road car in 1:18 anyone? Or the 1994 Le Mans winner? And given the popularity of Le Mans and rally cars in 1:43, has it not occurred to anyone that there are collectors who also want them in 1:18? Our scale isn't exactly rare, y'know!

I think the issue is that most 1:18 collectors are in the USA or Australia where interest in subjects like LeMans is very limited.

The strongest interest in subjects like this seem to stem from mainland Europe and Japan, where collectors are often constrained by a lack of space and appreciate 1:43 more.

The other issue is that LeMans has been held for 80+ years and with grids of up to 50 cars each year a decent collection of LeMans cars in 1:18 would need an area the size of a football field rather that an average house.

I'm just guessing here

It's called sales by volume, more sales of 1:43 & less of the 1:18 due to the limited interest in specialised cars, sales would be less even though the mark up is greater the limited volume would mean less profit.

My son already has the bug. He's going around telling people "When my Dad dies, I get his entire model collection"

Ain't Life grand. Sharing our hobby with the Cherub's. What a great thing to leave this world with. My son prefers cars which he can get his hands dirty too. When I have to work on the Singers, he's up in the shed with spanners in hand. :)
