Just wondering why some forum members have gone a bit quiet about cricket of late? Bit of noise a few months back about the Ashes?
Hmmm, the numbers 105 and 147 have a nice ring;):p

About time he did. He seems to have pulled the throttle back a bit and is thinking a lot more. With his batting as well he is starting to become a very dangerous cricketer.

Was there a cricket match today?
NO
A match would infer a contest between two teams. What we saw at Eden Park was a massacre.
With the Poms copping a hiding in Pakistan as well it seems normal transmission has been resumed.
In fact the only reason to watch the cricket from this side of the pond is to see how good the green & golds can get. Not just Lee stepping up but this new chap Hussey looks pretty special too.
Cheers
Lee
I flicked the telly on to catch the end of the kiwi innings but it had already finished???:D

The Wobblies & Kangaroos are just lulling YOUR boys into a false sense of security.:) As for Netball - stupid game. The ONLY game on the planet where you have to STOP when you get the ball. Not to mention THE highest incidence of knee & ankle injuries of any sport, anywhere.

I think I have to disagree with you there. I play mixed indoor netball, and it's a great game. It requires quite a bit of skill and coordination, and is one of the few physical games that males and females can play competitively together. I might have to agree with you about the knees and ankles, although the only major injury I have had playing netball was a fractured elbow.

I'm pretty sure the soccer world cup has the highest viewing figures of any sporting event in the world. Soccer is the only truly international football code and a great game in my eyes.
Netball is a physical sport. I also played mixed for a while and thought it was great fun. I never really understood it and apart from getting suspended once for punching a guy that was pushing and tugging at my shirt all match it was great fun.
I'm noy sure what position I played but I called it centre half forward! :D

You obviously haven't looked up the history of how NZ got there. For a start, they beat Australia 2-0 in Australia during their pool match. They had to play a record 15 games to get there. The most by any qualifying country. They also had to win their last pool match away in Saudi Arabia by 5 clear goals to force a play off with China and won 5-0 and then had to beat China to make the finals. This they did with the winning goal coming from a certain 18 year Wynton Rufer.
OK, they didn't do so well at the Finals but it was a hell of an effort to get there.

Now thats a game of cricket. Most incredible game i have seen.
Gotta love foxtel sometimes.
New Zealand just got all out for 320 with 2 balls to go.
Brett lee got slogged, (85 runs of 10 overs)
Mick Lewis (whoever he is) bowled the last over and they needed a run a ball with 2 wickets left.
Awesome bowling by lewis led to a great direct hit from m.clarke and also a run out from lewis at the end. We will all know who lewis is now!

Great win by the Socceroos. I don't think that really surprises anyone here. Now the tough matches really begin. Just looking back over some of the comments I had to wince. The World Cup is the largest sporting event in the world -ie larger than the Olympics in both attendance and TV viewers. I do think the Kiwis will qualify for the World Cup sometime down the track as Australia are now in Asia and hopefully Oceania get a automatic spot.
Until then - Go Socceroos!!!!

Interesting outlook. The Olympics is the more credible event though.
Your figures re viewers and attendance may be right, but having spent much time in Europe working of recent times, I'd say 'Football' appeals more to the lower common demononater - in general. Of which I'm one I'll admit.

I would disagree with that statement. George Gregan migrated to Canberra and grew up playing rugby at St. Edmund's; also from the Canberra and Eddies are Matt Giteu the highest payed Aust Union player and one of the world's best inside centres; Matt Henjak is from Canberra, Larkham from Queenbeyan which tho part of NSW claims to be part of Canberra.........so there is a territory in the mix to ;)

Well Tait for one - I still say he is not yet fit to empty the dressing room bathtub, yet alone bowl for Australia.
If Australia is going to play an all-rounder, how about playing one who can bat AND bowl? Far as I can see, White is just there because he can bat a bit. His bowling is still not up to first-class scratch.

I've never seen Tait bowl better than last night but he has to be more consistent through all the games. As for White, I have no idea why they pick him as a spinner when he cant even turn the ball  Yes he can bat a bit but Australia dont really need him as a batter. Kiwi fans don't worry too much.
I think when the selectors get the right mix of players you'll be very competitive.
As for Flintoff, he's tried his @rse off all summer, and although he hasn't always got results, he's always been 100% committed and given it everything he's got...
His first over in the Adelaide test when he got Langer was an absoloute pearler...
Now a few other guys are coming to the party and he doesn't have to worry about captaining, he is going to start getting those results....

Firsly, Where did I ever say Australia would win the WC, my only reference was in regard to South Africa’s recent 392, and that I will wait till I see them on pitches away from SA….
Secondly, don’t know if I would call them perfect batting pitches in the West Indies as the highest ODI total scored in the West Indies is only 338, (ranking only as the 50th highest), but the fact remains that 400+ scores have been achieved 4 times only, 3 of them in South Africa (the only other occasion being Sri Lanka against the Netherlands)
And Pakistan this morning recorded the 22nd highest score in ODI cricket, scoring 4-351 and beating South Africa by 141 runs, there have now been 22 scores above 350 in ODI’s, 7 of those have been scored in South Africa, none in the West Indies….

Whats a Duckworth ?;)
Cant be much more than a chook surely:p :D
Dissapointing it ends with some stupid Duckworth/Lewis rule.
ICC needs a shake up with these ridiculous rules. Dont think it would have helped the Aussies though:(

Really nothing wrong with 152 from just 27 overs (5.6 an over) despite the rain and some ordinary selections at times, only a few years ago they missed the finals all together, it happens and you cant win them all no matter how good the side is, and something the aussies probably needed before the world cup

And the duckworth-lewis rubbish isn't helping either.
Much better than the previous system...remember the game between South Africa V Australia in the early 90's. SA had a higher run-rate than Australia, needed 21 off 31 balls, had a rain interval, and the equation after the rain was 21 runs from 1 ball:eek: ...and they actually came back out and bowled that 1 ball too:shame:
very good leigh, lmao
twasn't me:p But I'll take the credit;)

Your memory is slightly flawed - it was the '92 World Cup semi-final against England. They needed 22 off 21...then 22 off 13...then 22 off 1...

Hasn't Australia been in every World Cup final?:o
Well I got the early 90's bit right:p
I'll go back to my hole now;)

Hodge has been the a shining light for AUS especially in the field. Symons hasnt been missed at all in that regard... and his batting has started to ouze confidence so the world cup is a certainty for him IMO. I hope White goes with him. Yes IM a biased Victorian! :D
The selection of Watson and Hogg was a shocker, I think the selctors are planning for the world cup but they could have done that for the Chappel Haddley trophy!

Really nothing wrong with 152 from just 27 overs (5.6 an over) And I thought they were pretty damn good in the field as well (maybe except for Hayden's diving effort...;) )
And how good was the build-up to McGrath's last over, and ball - picking up a wicket off your final ball at your home ground was a fitting way to finish off. The atmosphere at the ground must have been electric...

OK, so whats he got to do with a cricket rule:confused:Nothing - It's just HDTHSVHRT's way of plugging his favourite footy team (go Hawks!)
The Duckworth in the Duckworth/Lewis system is actually Frank Duckworth (go Hawks!) who, with fellow statistician Tony Lewis (go Hawks!), attempted to devise a fairer system for calculating the required target for team batting second in a weather-interrupted limited overs game of cricket (go Hawks!)
AFAIK no relation to Billy Duckworth (go Hawks!) ;) :D

world cup squad announced : Ricky Ponting (capt), Adam Gilchrist (vc), Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, Andrew Symonds, Shaun Tait, Shane Watson.
I thought Stuart Clarke and Cameron White would've got a call up though

No surprises there...clearly Watson is Ponting's love child and Tait has incriminating photos of what Boonie and Merv did to a giant chocolate cake on the 1993 Ashes tour...
I thought Stuart Clarke and Cameron White would've got a call up though
White isn't there yet, he needs to decide whether he's a batsman who bowls or a genuine all-rounder. And I'm not convinced that Clark would do the job in the Caribbean.

If Andy Symons doesnt overcome his injury then White will get the call up.

Maybe, but if he has to bowl he'll probably tear a muscle due to lack of work.

Thought they would have found a spot for Clark somewhere.
Going to be a key man in our test attack for a long time and can't get a spot in the World Cup, go figure.

But it's two different forms of the game...being a good player in one doesn't necessarily make you a good player in the other...

Okay but given how consistent his line was in the tests it seems strange.
It's usually batsmen where the distinction is more clear-cut (eg: Langer, Mark Taylor).

During the commentary of one of the one-dayers, Taylor said that he was too predictablefor the one-day team because of his consistency...
He needs to learn to "mix it up" at the same time as being consistent with his line and length;) I thiunk he has the later down pat:)

agreed Leigh...it's one of McGraths greatest strengths, which will be sadly missed after the world cup. What he can do (& other's can't) is to bowl consistent yorkers during the last 5 overs to contain the other team's scoring......
Someone will need to stand up & I think if Stewart Clark can produce this then he will be a starting player in the team for a long time to come.
