I will be doing them again...........I have some pics, not very good ones though

Does anyone know the "official" date of when they should actually be turned on?. I believe it's December 1, but I'm not sure

Thats when we put our tree up, we usually start putting our lights up a bit earlier--- our house ain't that good for chrissie lights, the one we had in Tassie was brilliant for them though

Now I don't mean to be attacking any forum members here, but I think that Xmas lights are a waste of power and money. I am not being a scrooge here, but they consume an awful lot of energy and must cost a fortune.

I would rather donate money that I would have spent on Xmas lights and their power to a charity as a christmas gift to the community.

Purchasing goods, whether they are lights, electricity or whatever provides jobs in design, manufacturing, resources, distribution, shipping, wholesale, retail etc etc etc

My $1 spent on lights does FAR MORE economically than your $1 given to a charity...of which an average of 40% goes on operational support for the charity...

So you are saying its better to make the rich richer and the poor poorer?

I honestly get disgusted that there is christmas goods in my Coles store in late september, and 2 weeks after christmas we get the easter buns and chocolates. There is too much pressure to buy, buy, buy. And these are truly material goods. We could do our economy better if we stopped using our credit cards, which had contributed to 3 or 4 interest rate rises.

Not at all...

But this is all off-topic, lets get back to Christmas lights...if you want to talk spending versus giving, start a new thread.

Hi again to all,

Today in the letterbox junk mail containing the Bunnings specials and guess what that refered to garden lights etc.
My wife read this and kindly mentioned " how long ago did we get some new XMAS lights ? and it wont be long before YOU have to put them up again and WHEN will you finish the entertainment unit YOU ARE BUILDING ? hope it is done before XMAS.

OH THE JOY.

but they "the lights do look good and the kids love em especially on a warm night with a gentle breeze swaying the lights on palm fronds"

We used to absolutely cover our place and we love to drive around checking them out around the place. We haven't done it for some years now because this time of year its 40 odd degreees, followed by squalls followed by 40 odd degrees. If you like climbing up and down a roof all day in baking heat trying to locate a stuffed globe or transformer, this is the place for you..:D

About 4 years ago, the wife and I made a couple of wooden cut outs, lined them with colour correct lights and put them up. they looked a treat. The next day, people from 4 houses up returned both pieces of one of them due to one of our nightly squalls.. Another time I remember the wife bringing home a god awful cheap big plastic relief santa. You could almost hear me laugh all the way down the street as it dissappeared into the night destination unknown.. nowdays when these squalls come, I'm more interested in saving my mango's.

Once on a trip to the USA at xmas time I was invited to a colleagues house for an evening BBQ ... as we drove to his house we went past amazingly lit up houses with free standing reindeer, santa's, sleighs, elves etc all lit up in the front yards - kind of like National Lampoon's Xmas Vacation ... anyway - we came round the corner to this blokes house to see something rather amusing in his front yard - he commented " you know you have teenage boys when you come home and all the reindeer are humping each other in the front yard" ! Was quite amusing !!

It's quite common over here. My boss, who had teenagers, told me they even have a term for it. Darned if I can remember it now.

And to the fellow installing Christmas lights in 40-degree weather. You could also be installing them in -10-degree weather on an icy roof. That's why I stuck a wreath on the door and deemed the outside decorations "complete".

Why hasn't this been moved to 'Off Topic'??

Oh yeah, I remember - it was a five minute, half-baked idea to set it up and now it's all too hard.

I went out and bought a bunch of LED lights from the Christmas Cave. Certainly need to get some more next year to cover more of the roof. Bought some plain bulb light and already there are 3 sections out due to blown globes... waste of money and not very bright comapred to the LED ones. Will move them around the back next year...

the last time we put lights up, 1/2 of the buggers wouldnt work anyway, so i think the coloured garden lights will have to do :D (as long as the bloddy kids dont try and steal them...)

With all the talk of Global warming and trying conserve energy i cant believe we or the govenrment encourage this activity still!

Here we are talking about trying to burn cleaner coal etc and what do we do for 4 weeks per year, chuck a heap of lights on the outside of our house to make it look pretty

I have the minimum lights on at our place, the Christmas tree has a few which get run for around 2 hours a day and that it.

ducks for the comments to follow.

Its the first year we have gone nuts putting up lights.

We put up a total of about 3000 lights with 1500 more in the shed but we ran out of the little clips to hold them on.

I will get some pics tomorrow night and maybe a video.

Clark Griswald Hey??? You should see all the power boards and extension cords through the house.

We only have them on when we are home incase something decides to ignite.

Yeah put up about 4000 so far. Still haven't covered the roof yet but I dont think I can be tossed as it takes too long to put up and take down.
