If you have received a PM or seen a post that has been made by a member that appears to be spam please PM me and let me know about it. Forwarding the PM would be helpful also.

Do I open it or delete it??

Why can un-authorised new users send PM's?

They are not un-registered they are registered through the same process everyone goes through.

Gee you're only two weeks late Nathan :p

So how are new members authorised, because it seems of late that quite a few of the spammers have had rather obvious user names which suggest whom they are ???

Well, forgive me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that you register, then someboy has to authorise the registration so that the person can post...but it seems that the spammers have worked out that there is no security imposed on either PM's, or sending a PM to multiple users! I think the use of the PM system should be restricted to sending to Biante Staff and that is it!

I recieved one from this user name, odd thing I noticed is the join date of said username, which was Jan 1970.

Is that how it really works.....I get the feeling that there is no human involvement in this whole process and that it's simply an automated system, or else why would we have had members named ferrarifan & ferrari fan and younglion & YoungLion for example

So whom is right Nathan ???

Are you saying that all PM's should be restricted to sending things to Biante staff, or just newbies?

Leigh

Just newbies until they are authorised...

Thanks for clarifying that Leigh,

I agree with you on that.

I'm pretty sure that when I joined the forum, all I had to do was submit info,eg email. Choose a username and password, and then you were signed up.

Dunno if it's like that today

There's no point in spamming these forums, because there are no email alerts to let me know I have a PM, unlike other forums.

Brad, you have a PM;)

CV8, You can't post until somebody at Biante clicks the "authorise" button that allows you to post these days...but the newbies who are not yet authorised CAN send PM's (to up to 50 people at once:eek:)

Ah I see.

When I joined up early last year you could post straight away.

It doesn't suprise me that it has changed.

So can one bring in the box where you have to enter random letters & numbers "For new users" before the can start to send pm's? as that stops the spam bot's.

Leigh

It already has that Mike. These people are physically registering themselves and then sending multi PM's...whether the PM sending is by bot or they physically do it themselves I have no idea!

If they get to the point of being approved they have confirmed there email exists. If they name appears legit then they are approved.

So whom is right Nathan ???

If they get to the point of being approved they have confirmed there email exists. If they name appears legit then they are approved.

So I will ask my question again seeing you have chosen not to address the actual question. Is it an automated system or does someone physically approve these new user names ???

You say that "they are approved" but we already know that as this latest example demonstrates that there are still crack/holes in the current security measures.

I also agree with the other members whom have already posted that your spat/discussion between Leigh and yourself shouldn't be here on the open forum, isn't there another section you can have that in ???

Also if these new members are being checked before they are approved to participate in the forum, then why was Leigh's new joke user name of 'spammer' allowed to be activated in the first place ???

I think there are some serious questions that need to be answered as it seems that with the heightened popularity of this forum, it is ever increasing becoming a target of such activities ???

It appears evident that an increased vigilance is required from all moderating parties involved in this forum and not just leaving it to the unpaid labour.

Without the 'unpaid labour' as you put it Brad we would end up like the CC forum.

Nathan i think you really need to get a new system on board, i am a member of a lot of forums and they ALL require someone to phyiscally accept an applicant before they can post anything.

Also they have a minimum post count before you PM a member of the forum, this will automatically stop some people/persons joining and then spaming the people of this forum. If they really want to contribute then waiting a 1-2days for a validation process wont kill them.

It may also be a good time to purge those memberships which ave been inactive for sometime, this would allow you to accurate forum member numbers and stop multiple accounts that seem to appear from time to time due to people forgetting there login/password.
