Beagles are ok, but you go past a Boxer

They need heaps of walking and make sure you have a good fence setup. I used to live near a bloke with a beagle and it kept getting out, he had 8ft high fence's that it used to jump/climb over.

They also like to dig. Had one that would chew trees off at their base, pluck tomatos off the bush squeeze and suck the insides out. Like Luke states, they can jump quite high so you do need a decent fence.. Very intelligent and as such can be easily bored if not exercised.

I have had Boxers for the last 30 years and I can't fault them at all. Don't know much about the Beagle, but Boxers are in the top 10 most popular dog in this country.

The guy across the road has two. They don't bark. but howl.
Annoying dogs.
Go for a Boxer. Great dogs..

Why not a German shepherd then, i have had 3 in the last 30 yrs and they are great dogs. Train them when they are pups and they will be very loyal, wont bark and will look after you.

I have never liked dogs except for Shephards. My first was a pure bred shep which we got (still have) 7 years ago. Best thing we ever done, need to be trained (dont all dogs?), but the loyalty and "feel safe" factor is well worth it.
I know for a fact, she has saved my collection on at least one occasion;).
Sorry we have got off topic,as you asked about beagles. If thats what you want its your choice. You need to ask yourself what you want the dog for, company, protection, inside, etc.

Can't beat a Border Collie for a dog if you can exercise them properly.

Beagles are a good dog
the quarantine people at the airport use them,
i was thinking about one of these when we got our dog until i asked the quarantine dog handlers.
fantastic dog, great pet with a great temperament but if they get a scent they are off.
so you must have em on a leash otherwise you have a long chase as they wont come back.
all dogs should be on a leash when in public
we settled for a golden retriever , beautiful dog ,great temperament, obedient and easy to train,
but the hair gets on every thing.
if you have access to flickr you can see our dog on my photostream my user name is

forgot to mention they are the last 2 images to save you going thru 4 pages of cars, planes and family
I'm with Wayno, Border Collies are great dogs, I've got two of them. They arn't for everyone though, they have an active mind that needs something to entertain it. In every survey on the most intelligent dogs they are always at the top.

Bad news about beagles: the buggers dig, howl, chase cats and climb out of fences. We looked after a friends, the little sod (his name is Houdini...I kid you not) got out and was running down the white line of a very busy road as if he was on a hunt! We breed Labradors...far more relaxed!

I second that, we have a German Shepard x Rottweiler (ultimate guard dog) and wouldn't trade her for the world, barely barks at all, very smart dog, I will get a another Shepard in the future, although am tempted to get a Husky after looking after a mates pair of Huskies.

Look, all these these people are telling these bad stories of beagles and by the sounds of it they're all second hand stories. I have 2 beagles and they have never done any of these things, but there is a reason for it if they do. When I got my eldest beagle the breeder warned me these things could happen. She reccommended I get 2 because they are a pack animal and if left on their own they can get very bored and destructive. She was right. Since I bought another beagle for company they have been good as gold. Trust me 2 beagles are far less trouble than 1 beagle.
