View Full Version : Murrays Corner
I'm just in the middle of finding out the meanings behind Mt Panormana's track corners & Striaghts names.
The only one 1 can't out is Murray's Corner.
Who was it named after & for what significance?
I'm guessing it could have been for Jack Murray.

You're all wrong - it's actually the nearest corner to the River Murray, which runs only a few hundred km from the circuit.

Nice try!!!;) Murray's & Hell corners are at the northern end of the circuit and the Murray river is roughly due south!!
I'm tipping Jack Murray!!

Since we're on this topic of naming each part of the track, can someone tell me how the other sections got their names?

I just contacted the Bathurst Racing Museum on (02) 6358 8434 and asked the question. The corner was named after JACK MURRAY

IIRC, Sulman, Reid and McPhillamy were councilors in the Bathurst area at the time and helped get the 'scenic/tourist' road built in the first place
Thanks for the help, the rest of the Track corner name meanings are on Wikipedia under 'Mount Panorama', expect for Reid Park, named after the Council Engineer who made the tracks road.

Interesting, I'd emailed the National Motor Racing Museum at Bathurst (at Murray's Corner) earlier and this was the managers response:
It was actually named after Bill Murray (no relation to "Gelignite" Jack Murray. He was the winner of the 1947 race at Bathurst in an MG TC.

Concur he was a barrel of laughs in the mentioned movies, but the only SURE thing is that the corner is NOT named after Bill Murray & the Ghostbusters !!!.....My info so far indicates Jack of Gelignite fame. (Speaking of which, could you imagine the brow wrinkling, screams of terror etc if you were in this day & age to jot your hobby down in the visitors book as "Blowing crap up" !! ). :D:D:D
