OK, here are a few photos, most of which are for Richard to drool over! They're scanned small, so you lose a bit of detail, but it gives you an idea. And for F1 fans I'm afraid I didn't take any photos of the various teams, as F1 isn't my thing. Sorry! As you can see, the crowds are quite manageable, and the cars are parked with no barriers of any kind. Some sit on the lawns in front of the house, and others get bitumen parking bays nearby, with canvas awnings to keep the rain off. But all are fully accessible to anyone - no pit passes or rubbish like that needed! The cars are worked on and fired up where they sit, so you can lean over the engine compartment of a racing Ferrari alongside the mechanics if you want! And when they're ready to run, they drive across the grass or down footpaths to get to the track, so you have to shift when they squeeze by! There are very few marshals, except along the track itself, as you can see from the photos of the Audi, Porsche and Ferrari Le Mans cars trundling through the crowds.

I do read that F1 is not your cup of tea, but do you have any pics at all of F1 in Goodwood?
I can tell you that Richard does not mind F1 either.
Goodwood is a step back in time including the accessability and I for 1 want to expierience it for sure.
Thank you for the pics , and have a great festive season.
May many a diecast come (carefully) throught the chimney and find a place under the lit up tree.

Hi Ferrari Fan! Yes I do have a few F1 pics - I've just got to find them! The ones I posted (and most of them haven't got through) were the "rejects" and the best ones are in an album somewhere. The usual teams are at Goodwood (Jaguar, Williams, Ferrari, Benetton, Jordan, McLaren etc) but not always all at the same time. If it comes through, here's a Ferrari sportscar for you, squeezing through the crowds on its way to the track. There were two 512Ms that day - the other one was for sale!

The pics look great Nick, thanks. I had read that Nick Mason (Pink Floyd drummer) had his F1 GTR which was converted to make it barely legal on the road there one year and his wife was the fastest woman up the hill in it for the whole event.
I was given a gift voucher for Pitstop bookshop so maybe I will get the 2002 Goodwood video with it. You've inspired me.
Yes FF, I do like F1 and bought my first F1 Ferrari model yesterday. I got the 312T4 of Gilles Villeneuve from Exoto for only $190. It is the US GP winner without the umbrella. Full price (about $330) is too much but I couldn't pass up on it at the reduced price.
One day I will get to Goodwood. Maybe not for a few years but I WILL get there.
Maybe we could go together FF?

Admin how did you score the exoto at A$190.00? Was it an online special or a partial freebee due to your connections?
While your here will Biante be getting any of these,
Richard Poole
21-12-2002, 01:54 PM
Admin didn't score it, I did.
I purchased it from a regular store at regular prices just the same as any regular customers. The salesman didn't know I worked at Biante until after I purchased the car.
Yes we will be stocking item number 400 020124 (it has been listed on the website for some time). As Admin has said many times before, we always order every item that is produced by Minichamps for general release.

Richard , I do not know if the# cook# has given you my number, but here it is 0409820440. this has been on for sale before
This well known Perth retail outlet also has the Prost 642 anf the 312 Icxk at the same price. Bleeding bargains!!!!!I did buy the Japanese Tyrrell by exoto, there not so long ago for almost double
If you ever have the chance of getting the rainmaster set from Exoto, It is well worth the so called duplication as it has Gilles sitting in the car and with the bodywork off it shows him from head to tow.
The other ferrari 1/18 and 1/43 model car that has Gilles Villeneuve on the rim of the cockpit is from Minichamps the F300.
This is to commemorate the Canadian GP in 2002 well worth getting
It is a Ferrari he never drove but should have!
It is also the only ferrari that has Michelin Tyres on it.
People in time will catch on to these and it will become a collectors favourite. together with the USA commemorative ones.

I did see the Prost car there but the detail, driver name, and historical significance of the T4 won me over. The Prost car is great but the details on modern F1 cars are mostly hidden unlike the classics. My car has the Villeneuve figurine in it and looks superb. If the Prost car is still there in a few months I might consider it then.
I haven't talked to the cook for a while but will see him tomorrow. I will give you a call in the next day or so and make a booking :D.

Ferrari Fan and Richard,
While you are dreaming of your trip to Goodwood, you might also want to think about visiting Brooklands. As well as the remains of the old track, there is a great little museum containing cars from the Brooklands era, and another with more modern F1 cars.
Attached are a few photos I took when I visited there earlier this year.
The first shows the McLaren cars. In front is James Hunts car from the 1970's. Behind it is the car of Emerson Fittipaldi (I think), and to the left are the MP4/6 of Ayrton Senna, and the MP4/11 of Mika Hakkinen.
I know I should also know what the green car with the yellow nose is, but I have completely forgotten.

And another of the McLarens of Senna and Hakkinen (and that mysterious green car)

...and finally, the Napier Railton, in mint (out of box!) condition.
This car is the lap record holder for the Outer Track at Brooklands, with a speed of about 143mph.

Kiwi, Great pics, the First pic is Hakkinen's World Championship car from 98 MP 4/13 and the Senna car looks like the MP 4/6 from 1991?
The green car with a yellow nose would most likely be a Lotus.

I have just realised that the James Hunt McLaren featured in the McLaren1 photo is probably the 1976 McLaren Ford M23 of James Hunt featured on the Biante website in the New Model Showroom.
Can anybody confirm this?
I notice the car in my photo has a few 'unhealthy' stickers attached to it, which don't appear in the photos on the website. I understand the reason why, but I think the car looks better with the extra stickers. Pity.

Ah, but think what those products did to James Hunt......Or was it vodka? I forget.
For anyone interested, the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2003 is on 11-13 July. They've got their own website, but the FoS is very different from the "Goodwood Revival" at the nearby race circuit. This is the one where people dress up in period costume etc, and is a lot more formal and "posh" - the FoS is very casual.
I just stumbled across this site so i thought i'd revive this thread
there are some high quality photo's and some video's as well as some (lots)pictures of those red thingamies for bert

Was that the Cunningham Streamliner? Anyway, you can see how close you can get to the cars in the "paddock" (really a big tent over the cars while they're being readied for their runs). I didn't go this year, but they didn't have those barriers when I was there - perhaps it was in response to people sitting on the cars to take a breather!

The Sunday is the big day of the three, and has always been prepurchase. But the tickets are easy to get if you're on the ball and don't leave it too late! I'm hoping to go, but I have a heap of work on in late June, so it may not be a goer. But to anyone who does go, you'll remember it for the rest of your life! The photo I posted of the Le Mans Ferrari 512M squeezing through the crowds to get to the track sums it all up as far as I'm concerned - an unsilenced 5 litre 12 cylinder inches away, on its way to a full-bore blast along someone's driveway! It is the combination of informality and accessibility, plus the greatest assemblage of machinery you'll ever see that makes it the best event of its type in the world!

Ever since I first found out about it I've always dreamed of going. The cars on all the videos I have just make me want to cry! Must chase down more ticketing info as I've e-mailed goodwood three times and got no reply. I might be being paranoid, but it's a long way to go to get shafted!

Ah mint, i'd love to go there. Seen a few brief pieces on video/dvd etc of that place. All those classics, the JPS Lotus' of the 70s and 80s, and the Ferrari/Ford/Porsche stomping backyard work-shop built McLaren M8s of the Can Am championship.
Love to go there, but I think I'm gonna set my sights for a return to Melbourne in 2005 for the Grand Prix. Went on a tour through the McLaren Pits in '01, met Alex and DC, and I wanna go back! Now im a bit older, I'll be boozing up over there too, hope there is some Beck's on tap tho, VB = yuck hehehe.

Just got this years Goodwood brochure in the post and had a few questions. I was wondering if it would be best to book a grandstand ticket or is general admission adequate? Also where are the best places to spectate from? This is important to me as the camera gear is making the trip with me and I want to get some great shots of these wonderful cars in action.
Any advice much appreciated.

Grandstand means you can sit down on a seat instead of the grass, if it rains you have a roof over you, and although you are slightly higher up you are also further away. General admission allows you to wander around the paddock and concours displays, and walk alongside the track all the way from the startline to the finish at the top of the hill at any time. The only restriction is that you can't just cross the track when you like - you have to wait until a marshal lets you, but that applies to everyone! Basically, unlike a proper race track there are no "no-go" areas, you just amble about and poke your nose in anywhere. Think of a really big stately home garden with a track running through it and a couple of small grandstands, and you have access to the whole garden - that's it really! And quite often you can sit in the grandstand anyway if the seats are empty, as they often are at lunchtimes. As for photography, you'll find that as each car makes more than one run in a day you can capture all your favourites in the paddock being worked on, trundling through the crowd and at speed on the track with no difficulties. I spent my time walking all over the place and snapping away everywhere. It's all very close together, again unlike a race track, so you can even get a photo of the car being started, on its way to the track, and then again on its run up the hill. And then again on its slower run back down the hill. So you won't miss anything!

Having been to the DONNINGTON museum before and would like to visit all the other F1 team musea, like McLaren,Williams and Paul Stoddard his collection , do you have any more interesting visits that you would recommend, please?
Nick Short
17-01-2004, 07:10 AM
I'll have a think about that one - there is the Mad Max car in Keswick! But proper museums - there's the Haynes Museum in Sparkford (Mr Haynes publishes car workshop manuals) that has all sorts of stuff in it (used to have quite a few Ferraris!) and I think would be on the web. There's the Heritage Motor Museum just south of Birmingham that has all the classic British cars, for fans of asthmatic motors that leaked oil. It also has the Jaguar XJ220, Triumph TRs and that sort of thing, plus British racing cars. I'm sure there are more. I think Lotus have some sort of thing you can visit at Hethel, in Norfolk, and of course the legendary TVR in Blackpool! Not sure about some of the F1 teams like McLaren, Williams, Benetton, Jordan etc. Subaru/Prodrive are in Banbury, just up the road, and a few months ago TWR had all their Le Mans cars gathering dust in a tatty shed near Witney and in Kidlington.

Thanks for the feedback Nick, as I plan to do a lot of roaming around I think general admin will be the way to go.
This years festival is being run under the banner of 'Young Chargers and Old Masters', a celebration of the great family dynasties of the sport as well as the emergence of new technologies that usurped the old order.
Hope to see some truly great cars out there (really hope Jim Hall will be back with the Chaparrals). Oh yeah and I HAVE to see a BRM V-16 running.
Nick Short
17-01-2004, 04:22 PM
Not just see the BRM, Wayno, but HEAR it! The sounds of some of the cars - Top Fuel dragsters (on a narrow winding road!), F1 cars, V12 race Ferraris.........all inches away and at full revs! And they also run race bikes up the hill as well - Barry Sheene rode his #7 RG500 very flamboyantly to entertain the crowd a few years ago.

18-01-2004, 11:15 AM
Sorry hear it is what I meant. Seeing a BRM V-16 has become a mission ever since I obtained Nick Masons 'Into the Red' book and listened to the accompanying CD.
There is also going to be a tribute to Senna as this year is ten years since his unfortunate demise, which should be fantastic.
