I would like to learn more about the history of Touring Car racing in Australia. Some questions I have for now:

How many races comprised the 1984 AEC?

Who won the Races? (Brock/Perkins won Sandown/Bathurst)

What cars were they driving?

Did this have anything to do with AMSCAR or was that a seperate series again?

Are there any images of the winning cars that people may have?

Thanks in advance.

Endurance Championship i believe consisted of 5 rounds (maybe 6).

The races were:
Amaroo (300km): won by Gary Scott (Bluebird)
Oran Park (262km): Moffat/Hansford (RX-7)
Sandown (500km): Brock/Perkins (VK Commodore)
Bathurst (1000km): Brock/Perkins (VK Commodore)
Surfers Paradise (300km): Brock (VK Commodore) ?? not sure whether car was driven solo or not

Hope this helps

Thanks beast, quick reply too!!

Was there an option for solo driving?? I was of the understanding that was axed in 1972 after the Bathurst race? (Or was the solo thing only for the 500/1000??)

Beast's results concur with the Australian Motor Racing Year.

You could drive solo for the shorter races (all but Sandown and Bathurst.) This was the first time Sandown was 500km, by the way, christening the longer track, with the stupidly tight infield section that was added to bring the track up to international standard length.

Plenty of teams used the early races to blood co-drivers, while Hansford did the bulk of the Oran Park race as Moffat had the flu.

Brock crashed at Amaroo and didn't front at Oran Park, as they were building the VKs.

It looks like everyone went solo at Surfers Paradise.

I take it that Moffat won the AEC that year based on consistency.... With Brock winning three of the five races, and DNS/DNF in the others, must have hurt his campaign.

Was the garry Scott Bluebird the same model as George Fury drove to win pole at Bathurst that year??

If there was two drivers for the shorter races the drivers split the any points earned between them.

300 km around Amaroo Park would have had the drivers earning their keep!!! What a blast that little track was...

(shame I have only ever seen it on TV!!!)

Were the points also awarded based on the class system at the time, therefore awarding more points to Moff??

Was that the only three races the HDT VK 'big bangers' ran??

Yes yes, I know, questions, questions!!! But ya never know if ya never ask....

Was that the only three races the HDT VK 'big bangers' ran?? No, there was a non-championship race at Baskerville in Tasmania after Surfers. But I don't know if the HDT cars ran that one.

And yes, two drivers meant a sharing of the points. Moffat finished ever race he started, usually in the places and Hansford drove a second Mazda at Surfers.

Moffat won on 78.5 points from Hansford on 75.5 points. Brock came third.

The Commodore and the Mazda were in the same class although it was possible to run a bridge ported RX7 in the under 3 litre class.

Brock and Harvey also raced at the '84 AGP. In a weak field, Brock finished second and Harvey finished fourth.

The HDT 05 VH did run at Oran Park in the hands of Harvey and Parsons. The car didn't finish the race though.

brock didnt run at one event as he was in europe for the 24hr.
he missed 2 races, 1 in the ATCC, he would have most likely won the title that year if had a good finish.
also i dont think bathurst was part of the AEC. bathurst has always been a stand alone event.

Brock missed two of the ATCC rounds, Surfers (as he was at Silverstone) and Lakeside (Le Mans), Harvey drove #05 on both occasions

Bathurst was regularly, but not always, a part of the AEC, including 1984.

Scott's Bluebird was the same as Fury's. The team had 3 to choose from, Scott running the AMSCAR events while Fury did the ATCC, a similiar arrangement had been in place with FUry & Gibson in 1983.
