All,

The better half has decided we need to go to the US for a trip. LA in Oct. Disneyland...blah blah blah..

I noticed that the Pepsi 500 is on at this time and was wondering where do i get info about attending the race if possible.

I need to get from LA to Fontana on the day? Any ideas? How do i organise the travel, tickets? Any info would be greatly appreciated for this very novice potential US traveller.

Cheers

Hi Kraka,

I am looking at doing the same thing, from what i have seen it would be easy to drive to there from LA. As for tickets jump on the NASCAR.com site as there are links all over it for tickets for each event.

Are you going this year or next ?

Mate next year for us, going over for about 4 weeks. Looks like im am going to be going to Dover for my Nascar race. We only have certain times of the year we can go due to my other halfs work.

Really looking forward to it though, am planning on staying in Washington and driving to Dover which is about 3 hours. Really want to go to North Carolina to do a shop tour of the Nascar teams and hopefully the USF1 team. Got a bit of free time so might have a look at what other events we can go to while we are there.

Log onto NASCAR.COM for ticket information & dates etc for Fontana. Also hire a car at LAX and drive there yourself, it is very easy to find.....If you haven't driven in the US before it could be a little daunting, however give it a go because it is very rewarding to do it yourself. From LAX head south on World Way and head for Sepulveda Boulevard and look for I105 East (I is for Interstate) then I605 North. Then look for the I10 San Bernadino Freeway exit and head east, look for Cherry Avenue and turn left, the Speedway will be on your left about 2 km north of the freeway exit......easy!

You forgot to mention that it is alot harder leaving the track than getting to it if a race is on...

A question for anyone whos been to a NASCAR race.

Besides the Sprint Cup, Nationwide Series & Craftsman Trucks, what other support races are there on NASCAR weekends?
For example, I heard that at the Sonoma race last year, there was a Late Model Stock Car Race that Paul Morris tried to join in on.

Admittingly it was a few years since we last went but we went over to Martinsville for Ambrose's first truck race. On the Saturday there was the Truck race and qualifying for the Sprint Cup and that was it then on the Sunday we were told get in early (about 8am) We did so and everyone was setting up BBQ's and the like in the carparks, thinking this was pretty cool and not unlike Australia, the only pre-race activities was the driver intros, National Anthem (they are very patriotic so dont forget to take your hat off) and then the Jets flying over in sync with the end of the anthem then tose famous words...... Gentlemen, Start your engines!!

Other tracks may have other support categories but that was it for the event that we attended. Although must add that the Program was fantastic as you got a big full color program, plastic sleeve to put it in, entry to a competition then on Sunday a 16pp supplement with news/results of the days previous and last but not least a 1/64 diecast "event car" all included for $US9.95. We were also lucky enough to catch up with Marcos and subsequently signed the programs for us ;)

The 1/64 event cars are great, I have the 1992 Pepsi 400 car from Daytona....

If you want driver autographs, be sure to get there really early to get the free tickets for each driver. Luckily for us a young bloke gave us his spare ticket to meet Marcos.
At Texas in April, the Sunday pre-race entertainment was the standard anthem, jets etc, and a concert by 'Foreigner' on the main straight.
Get a GPS too, makes it so much easier to get around, and it's one less thing to worry about while driving on the 'wrong' side of the road.

Don't just limit your motor racing experiences to NASCAR. The final round of the ALMS (American Le Mans Series) is being held at Laguna Seca in California on 8 - 10 October.

"The 2.238-mile, 11-turn circuit is home to the world-famous Corkscrew, described by many drivers as the toughest and most challenging turn on the Series schedule".

"This race weekend concludes the 2009 season in dramatic fashion with the high-tech, high-speed Le Mans prototypes and GT machines of the American Le Mans Series staging a Saturday afternoon-into-evening four-hour race. Sunday’s action features the season finale of both the SPEED World Challenge Touring and GT series, the IMSA Challenge, Atlantic Championship and Star Mazda Series."
