Actually Brabham was given pole position even though he was only the 3rd fastest car.

The fastest qualifier, the Corvette GTS of Justin & Derek Bell will start from 7th position because it was pre-agreed that the new Daytona Prototypes would automatically start at the front of the grid.

Imagine winning the top 10 shootout at Bathurst only to be told your starting from 7th on the grid !

The Multimatic Motorsports Ford Multimatic won the inaugural race for the new Daytona Prototypes, finishing fourth overall at the 41st Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona.

The Multimatic car was piloted by Scott Maxwell, David Brabham and David Empiringham.

The #59 Brumos Racing Porsche Fabcar of Hurley Haywood, JC France, Scott Goodyear and Scott Sharp finished second in the Daytona Prototype class and fifth overall, 18 laps down from Multimatic.

“I think we were pretty close to winning the whole thing and we worked so hard through the night, commented Multimatic’s Maxwell. “We really pushed, and I thought it was going to pay off. Then all of a sudden we had the same problem that we had earlier. All in all, I think it’s been pretty successful.

“It’s a brand new project and the car really hasn’t done very many miles; this is the longest that it’s ever run, commented Brabham on the new Daytona Prototypes. “It ran pretty flawlessly except for two or three things, and until you do these distances you don’t know every little piece that will be stressed and will break. We remained in contention all the time and I think (the team) should be proud of what they achieved today.

For the first time since 1977, a GT-class car won the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The #66 Porsche GT3 RS of The Racers Group won by nine laps with drivers Kevin Buckler, Michael Schrom, Timo Bernhard and Jorg Bergmeister.

The overall race podium consisted entirely of GT cars. Finishing second was the Risi Competizione Ferrari 360GT shared by Ralf Kelleners, Anthony Lazzaro and Johnny Mowlem.

The Rennwerks Motorsports Porsche GT3 RS of Johannes Van Overbeck, Richard Steranka, Dave Standridge and David Murry earned third overall and in class.

I noticed a Mosler finished 9th. I wonder where the Monaro 427 would have finished had it been entered ! Will we see the 427 at Daytona next year in the form of a Pontiac GTO.
