Well, theres only a few weeks to go till the V8's hit the first round is Australia so I thought its time for the 2010 Clipsal thread (My apologies if theres already a thread about this).
So who's heading down this year this year?
Anyway, if anyones interested, I'll be heading down to the track in a week or so to check things out and can take some piccies for all interested. Its interesting seeing everything go up and how much work it takes to transform a regular busy street into a racetrack.
Also, does anyone have an updated list of the bands playing? All I can find on the net after a quick search is an old list with a lot of blanks.
Cheers,:)
Thomas

Be over there on the Tuesday Thomas, dont forget that lanyard you promised me, I need a good laugh Agreed, its the second best week all year, 1st is Bathurst!:)
Hey Bruce, I looked for the lanyard for ages and couldn't find it. Things are hard to find in a room that looks like a junkyard :o:( So I've been looking on ebay for one for the last few days to buy you.:)
Thanks for the link Darren, when you google Clipsal, it mainly comes up with accomodation and not event info.
Lastly, if anyone wants a little event program with race times and all that on it that'll fit inside your ticket holder, PM me in a week or so and I'll give one to you at the track. Its much easier than getting the whole program out your backpack every time you wanna see whats on.
Cheers,
Thomas

If ya really desperate enough for a siggy, join the queue around 01.00 wed morning then take pot luck on who is signing when you get to the tables which are usually set out in Holden or Ford sides...bad luck if ya chasing drivers from both sides:rolleyes:
It is good for a laugh, seeing people lined up as far away as Port adelaide and they really think they are going to get to the tables in the alloted time frame:D

I'm thinking of hanging around for a while Friday night to listen to Hill Top Hoods. A couple of local boys who went to the same school as my 2 (Blackwood High). I think they were a couple of years ahead of my oldest.

I think they were a couple of years ahead of my oldest. I've heard that some of my old teachers taught the boys from the Hilltop Hoods. Always good to see some local groups make it big.:)
I assume there'll be a lot of younger non motor sport fans around on Friday night though as they seem to have a very large fanbase.
Also, is it just me or do they always seem to have the more well known bands on last or late at night so you have to sit through hours of crap music before anything decent is on? The only exception was the Angels a few years ago an they were awesome!:D

I hope that they are better shaded grandstands than last year. To squeeze some more $ out of the event they kept the pit straight corporate box at the top of the stand which meant that the shade was pushed back so far that if you were in the first 10 rows you didn't get shade until virtually after the race. Very poor planning.

The thing i didnt like about the shade, was not seeing the air shows. We have survived 11 yrs without it (shade) pretty easy to seek relief under the stands during non race time.
The top 10 was good on the Friday, gave each day something to look forward to....If it aint broke ..

The shades have made a big difference and make it more enjoyable to sit out in the stand all day. Especially if your wearing black or darker coloured shirts.
I like those cool zone fan thingo's too that spray water out. They're very nice on a hot day.:)

And now the real season begins!

Starting the year off in the middle east has got to be one of the most stupid ideas ever for an Australian Championship, The start of the racing season always used to be exciting, new cars, new drivers going around Clipsal, just wasnt the same vibe with it happening over the other side of the world on a track with a hand full of people in the stands

The refusal of the South Australian Motorsport Board to grant the Motorplex consortium a stand where they could lobby for development of a much needed motorsport park at Port Adelaide is very disappointing.
Here is a transcript from a comment on the Adelaide Motorplex facebook site
( http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=132341252872&v=info#!/group.php?v=wall&gid=132341252872 (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=13234125287 2&v=info#%21/group.php?v=wall&gid=132341252872) ) and answer from the board:
Hi Everyone,
Well I am absolutely gutted! The Consortium of Adelaide Motorplex applied for a Trade Stall at Clipsal where we intended to not only have a Drag Car on display but perhaps a Drag Bike as well. The intent of the Trade Stall was to promote not only Drag Racing but Motorsport at the Port! We were prepared to pay the full price asked by Clipsal, close to $5,000 to do this as we felt it was in the interest of not only Drag Racing, but Motorsport as a whole, which would be to the benefit of this State. But guess what? Here is the official response from IMG and apparently SAMSB along with Clipsal 500!... See more

From: Raggatt, Ben
To: David Green
Subject: Clipsal 500 | Support Motorsport at the Port

Hi David
Thank you for your note, I have passed this onto management within the South Australian Motorsport Board. They have come back and informed me that they will not allow such a site promoting the "Support Motorsport at the Port/Adelaide Motorplex" campaign as it is a controversial political issue in Adelaide and the Clipsal 500 is strongly supported by the State Government.

If you still wish to have your City Dismantlers drag car on display with no reference what so ever to the campaign please let me know.

Kind Regards

Having an election on the 20th of this month, the Liberals and minor parties/Independents are all jumping on this band wagon as a way of trying to swing people who are into motorsport/driver training and want to see this go ahead. The only people that the organizers are endorsing are the Liberals at this point who have said that it will go ahead if they get in.

Are they good for it, thats the question? Plus when the environmentalist get wind of it there might be a prper stink (not just the mangroves). I'm thinking dolphins, sensitive wetlands, endangered species etc for starters:rolleyes:

I guess the more people we can enroll the more pressure we can put on the clowns to sit and take notice.

This happened here in the ACT. Motorsport complex, dragway etc. They promised a new dragway and to look at a complex, got in and six odd years later it still has not happened and by the looks of it, never will. You must remember that pollies don't care for anything other than getting elected and then change their minds quicker than Lady Gaga changes her knickers.

I got an invitation to go there a couple of years ago. Right on the corner is a good view but on the straight is pretty poor. They do a good job with the catering. The scotch was out as I was leaving to go to the Biante/TCM dinner. Pity I was driving.

If I'd have known that you were driving all over town, I'd have given you my Bathurst book to be signed by Davidson. He's the only winner from the modern era that I don't have. :D One more stop wouldn't have worried you, would it BJ? ;) You must be getting a pretty impressive collection by now?

Just got back from the track. The TCM were prob the best to watch today.
After the first practise John Bowes car had front left damage and Bill Pye's camaro had a snapped tail shaft in p1 and ended q1 on the back of a flatbed truck with a missing rear wheel. The GT champs were ok. Seems a few of the porsches are a bit quicker than anything else. Oh and the ascari sounds awesome!
One of the stalls had the 2009 bathurst winner in all scales.

I got a dodgy pic here of Bowes car with the damage. Did you see how it happened Darren?

The wierdest thing I saw all day was in the GT series when Tony Quinn spun his car on pit straight with about 100 metres to the chicane. Dunno how he managed that. And then laps later, a lambo randomly lost a rear wheel while diving through there and it hadn't even had a crash previous to it.

Anyway, overall it was a good day. Perfect weather and lots of things to see and do before the V8's hit the track tommorrow. There was also plenty of diecasts to check out and buy (got me a 1:18 07 Murph car for $79).
Heres some quick pics.

Bowe got it slightly wrong going into the last corner... got onto the grass, and it slid all the way into the tyre wall at the end. Not major damage, but a little embarrassing.

Looks like good battles ahead between the Bowe and Bullas Mustangs, the Falcon of Richards, and Miedecke in the Comaro.

Got to say that after being at the track today the standout was the TCM. Guys giving it their all, cars moving around, squirming on tyres, cocking wheels off the ground when cornering, overtaking, great stuff. Real racing where the drivers have to be in control of the cars, no one in the pits telling them to stiffen bars etc. Interesting point, on the back window of Leanne Tanders GT a faded, bubbled sticker with FORD by COFFE (spelling), now thats original. The Mustangs were great as were the GTS's but the stand out was the Alfa having its neck wrung. Not fast but 110% committed to the corners, full lock well before the apex and maintaining it with the inside wheel well off the ground. And the sound of those old cars............

Biggest disappointments were the lack of Astons in the GT racing and the R8 smacking the wall and pulling into the pits after not completing a full lap. Other than that a great day.

Sadly Mr.Quin has his awesome DBRS9 for sale, I wonder in light of today if he'll change his mind about this and his Mosler.....

I was devastated to see the R8 eat the wall as being the only one outside of Europe, getting spares might take a while....:(

Think Mr Quinn might need some $$$ after he well & truly blew his engine into a million pieces in his R35 GTR at Rally Tasmania going into Savage River Stage...then Klarke Quinn did exactly the same coming out of Savage River in the sister GTR!! Just got back from day two and it was another cracker. The weather gods are being very nice with the weather (IMO) perfect for the last two days.:) Pity about the dust though as I now got bad hayfever. At least it blocks out the smell of alcohol and cigarette smoke from the concert.
Anyway, I just noticed that the HRT boys aren't at all interested in the fans. Fair enough if it was race day and it was busy but they won't even sign something once the last of their sessions is done. I asked Davison for a sig and he turned his head away and walked straight past. And he was in no rush to get anywhere too as previous to that, he was watching the other categories race on one of the screens in the HRT pits.
Lastly, Jim Richards looks busy again. He was racing in two seperate categories today.

Tossers. I noticed the same with Courtney at last year's Indy race or SuperGP. I asked him to sign a poster and his lame excuse was that he didn't have a pen. I had one but he kept walking.

Whincup is only driver I know that is always interested in the fans. At the SuperGP, he signed my poster no probs even though he was told to hurry up by his female minder. A few years ago, he signed my son's shirt and even posed for photo's with him.

Enjoy the racing!!! I'll be watching it on TV. Go the Fords and go Whincup.

888 better look into using some of those old plastic splitter clips on their bumpers. Thats two of them to break in two races.

Mr Dane should start reading his rule book a little better before having a rant like.

Ok we a bit slow up here sorry coz our telecast has only just started here. Now with the qualifying debacle on curb hopping im a bit lost now as at the end of quali they interviewed the v8 official on the rule and he said quote "if found in breach of all 4 wheels curb hopping your fastest time in the whole session is taken away" so can someone tell me why whincup is starting from P2 when he was found in breach very odd when winterbottom and courtney and several others where pinged and dropped back:rolleyes: im missing something here i know just seems odd

yes john you did miss something yes whincup and 5 others were penalised for curb hopping so jamie was told to go out and do another cracker lap and he did and thats why he ended up on grid where he did

Couple of things i noticed this weekend that i thought i might share. Don't know if its been mentioned but I'm not going back through pages of posts because i haven'e been on in a few days.:D
Caruso's car has blue headlight covers, Holdsworth's doesn't, easy way to tell them apart.
At various times this season both Lowndes and Whincup have had either red or black grilles. Rather than to tell the 2 cars apart, perhaps the red grille has different blanking to the black one and its so the team can tell them apart at a glance.

Anyway, though the racing was pretty good, yesterdays was like 3 racers in one and todays was like one giant sprint race. I loved them both (except for the result, although even that wasn't too bad), much better racing than in the middles east (which was a snoozefest). Its good to see Whincup not win for once and hopefully show that not all V8 rounds are boring.

that's really strange, there is curbing around Adelaide, near Rundle Street which isnt part of the track, and its in perfect condition. Been there since the GP days. The public drives on it every day.

Your standard road car doesn't apply the same force to the road that a V8 Supercar does.

Losing 888 is a big loss to Ford that is no doubt but it is good to see the strength in the Fords that are left. Wins will be low on the ground this year that is for sure but at least they will keep the Holdens honest. It isn't quite the Commodore Cup that Simon Macnamara expected/wanted :)

With the entries being about 2 to 1 why do ford have 3 of the top 5 drivers
1 Jamie Whincup Holden
2 Mark Winterbottom Ford
3 James Courtney Ford
4 Shane van Gisbergen Ford
5 Lee Holdsworth Holden

And race 6 shows Fords hunger 1st holden then what the next 4 Ford and 1/2 of the top 10 cars were Ford. If the championship finishes with about 4 Ford's in the top 10 that would be great for Ford, but that is a long way off yet and we can only wait.

Just got back from the track then and what a great day it was.:) Well done to Garth on an awesome effort!:D
I'm glad they had that safety car at the end as it made the last 14 or 15 laps a lot more interesting. And its great that Whincup had his fair share of bad luck for a change. Garth had it the first two rounds.
And after the race, my cousin and I went for a walk around the track when all the transporters were leaving. We joked that we might see some drivers out and there was Todd Kelly talking to a guy behind the bus (got my photo with him:)).
Lastly, the concert was great! For old guys, they put on a bloody good show.

Well that's more like it - what a great weekend of racing!

R1 - I know Whingecup didn't get his new two front tyres but I don't think they would've made too much of a difference considering he was short on fuel so the tyre excuse has no merit.

R2 - Well personally Whingecup got screwed by the stupids regarding the black flag but rules are rules & to be fair nearly everyone else has been stuffed but the stupids at one time or another. And he was "looked after" very well by the stupids in qualifying when he quite clearly jumped the kerb with all 4 wheels inside the line - whereas others had their fastest times scrubbed - so as they say sh-t happens get over it & Dane.

Overall if the rest of the series is like last weekend we are in for a cracker of a season.

Given that the 'heat' that was talked about on Saturday (only 30C) and the few drops of 'rain' on Sunday it was from what I experienced mostly Aaron-Noonan-hyped-up-rubbish to make the event more 'exciting'. I would say that it was part HRT misinformation to put other teams off, and part entertainment for the viewers. While I have the greatest respect for and enjoy the information given out by Skaife, Crompton and Larkham, the Ch7 professional commentry leaves a lot to be desired.

Another fantastic, well organised event yet again! Great racing and the change to the qualifying and top ten from the usual Friday afternoon to Saturday morning was a nice change. Great action in the chicane again, that mini rolling through the gravel and mounting the fence, the Audi and Mosler crashes and the aussie racing car losing it's door all added to the action. It was good to see the support event categories moved to the new location in front of the old SAJC stand, for a moment I was wondering what was going on when the usual area only had the V8 utes!??
