We are currently working on the Allan Moffat 1988 Bathurst ANZ Sierra. All of the livery has been finalised other than the one logo as shown in the attached pic.
If anyone has a CLEAR (!) shot of this logo and can post it on the forum for us it would be very much appreciated. Please don't e-mail large attached pics as this slows our e-mail system down drastically. The logo doesn't have to be on the car, a print add or something of this type with the same logo is Ok. It must be clearly readable (not blurry) and is needed as soon as possible.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
Hey Richard
I would digitise it for you, but for the
fact it's hard to see what it actually is.
Cheers

That's exactly our problem, this is the clearest picture we have. There should be someone out there with a photo of the Moffat car where the logo is actually distinguishable. If we knew what it was we would know where to look.
The logo is in the same position on both sides of the car.
Either ask Allan Moffat,Klaus Niedzitch or Rudy Eccumburger what it is.
I'II check my doco on Moffs 1988 weekend to find out what it says.

I've just spent the last hour going through my Bathurst annuals & the Australian Motor racing year annual & I can't find anything on it.
It must have been a sponsor who just jumped on board for the great race, as all the pics I have show the car from the ATCC & the 500 win without the image you have posted. The only bathurst pic only show thye front of the car & your image is not able to be viewed.
Perhaps we have someone who attended the race & have some photo's in their archives.
Sorry, but still searching although it doesn't look good.

Would it be on the ANZ Bank Video?
"Moffat: The Man & The Mountain" detailing Moffats 1988 Bathurst Challenge.
In Bathurst The Magazine (1990) on page 26 is that the same logo underneath the Australian flag on the Neil Bates car?

Well i think that it might be the World Title decal of Eggenberger cossie's. Just trying to remember.
That is the only thing i can think of. I havent got any tapes to watch so it not something i can find.
They didnot run the decal at the ATCC round in W.A.

Have you tried Chevron Publishing, Ray Berghouse etc have many pictures from this era. Also when Lance J Rutting passed I'm sure his photos became available to the public, but not sure how? There was a web site but that has since gone.
It almost seems that the car only liked to have photos taken from the front.

I think it could be the logo for the Light Car Club of Australia. I can remember seeing something simular on a race program from the early 90's & the logo looks simular to the image that Richard posted earlier.
hope this helps,

I will donate the prototype of this model to whoever comes up with the FIRST clear pic of this logo!!
Thanks for all your help so far.
Try www.autopics.com.au
There sure to have several pics of it.
I think its a Telecom advertsing sticker because of the Aus flag which looks to have olympic rings under it.

We have tried Autopics, chevron, and Allan and do not have a clear photo of the logo.
It may be an Olympic logo as ANZ were a sponsor of the games that year.

I've been searching the web on ANZ, the olympics, bathurst, 1988, etc for the past 4 hours & still nothing !!!
I even got my brother to watch the bathurst highlights video that we've got & still nothing.
The only pics I found were the one that have already been posted of the Corolla which I found in the bathurst program.
Also on my Allan Moffat poster from 1989 it has the logo, but it is no better than the images that have already been posted.
Still looking but losing hope,

Hi Richard,
Here is another little clue....
I have a photo of the rear of the Sierra which Dick Johnson/John Bowe ran in the 1988 Nissan-Mobil 500 street race here in Wellington on October 24, 1988.
There appears to be the same sticker placed on the back of this car between two Shell stickers. This car was sponsored by Shell and Fletcher Steel.
The picture I have is also fuzzy, but I will scan it for you and post it on this thread later today.
Maybe DJR could help....the same sticker could have been on the back of their 1988 Bathurst Sierra.

Ok, so it was used by the 1988 Moffat Team and the two 1989 Corolla Bathurst teams
The Corolla's are in No 9 Bathurst Great Race book on page 116 & 206.
My belief is that it an award medallion sticker for some product (housing, wine ???)
Don't forget 1988 was Australia's Bicentenary Year 1788 - 1988.
If it related to this ot the Olympics, why was it on the 1989 Corolla's?.

That was my thoughts too bathurstfan, as I believe its an Australian Flag over some sort of fine line logo.
As for the writing around it is anyones guess.
Maybe it says send 1 complementary edition of each new biante car to Brad for the next 25 years !!!! :D
I even got a maginifying glass over my Moffat poster of this car, but its' simply too small to read.
I then thought that it may be a JH logo but it was a few years since JH had sponsored the race.

Here is my photo of the rear of the DJR Sierra during the 1988 Nissan-Mobil street race in Wellington.
I know it is a really fuzzy image, but it apears to show the same sticker. I'm only guessing, but the sticker may have been on the 1988 Bathurst car.
And, just for speculation, I don't suppose it is some sort of Queensland Car/Touring/Racing Club?

...and just for pure interest...a front view of the same car in the 1988 Nissan Mobil street race in Wellington.
The DJR Sierra qualified on pole for the race, but suffered from a misfire during the race, but then dropped out later when (apparently) the bottom of the dipstick was crunched up in the engine. The race was won by the Team Schnitzer BMW M3 of Roberto Ravaglia and Emanuele Pirro.

Picture of the Toyota driven by John Faulkner and Peter McKay and M.Dowson & Neil Bates is on page 391.
The sticker is clearly visible but due to the smallness of the pic , not decyfrable.

It also states that the pics of the car were used in the "Toyota's extra care campaign.

Its on 89 cars too so its not bi-centennial. And the organisers of races, particularly 15 years ago, are not really interested in which logos go on which car.
Who knows?? No one apparently.
We search and find about 10,000 of these per year and after the 'Rocktober' on the rear of the City Ford car, which took 3 months, this is the next hardest and so far, the only one that has us stumped.

Well, I've searched pretty hard for something (too bad the internet wasn't such a big thing back in 88 or I'm sure it would be easier to find).
Whilst it has been suggested its not a bicentenary thing due to it appearing on 89 cars, for me it sort of rings a bell along those lines. I sort of remember some awards (possibly recognising drivers or manufacturers) so maybe it is something like that (which a driver or manufacturer would proudly display beyond the year it was issued). Considering the drivers that had it on their cars (Moffat, Bates), it could very much be a recognition of their contribution to Australian motorsport.
Anyway, the best I could come up with is attached. Its not right, but might make a good alternative if it cannot be found.

I am 85% sure it is NOT:

-related to the olympics

ok, have tried a bit of digital enhancement of Richard's original pic.
from what I can make out, there are a series of words in an arch across the top half. Also, in the centre is a block word, with, say a scipt word from the left touching it. Bit like a stylised logo. Just below this, appears to be script writing, like a signature (reminds me very much of Brock's signature on the VL Group A commodore), and finally a larger block below.
Have a video at home, and has footage of the car in the pits. cam goes past the logo a number of times, but cant make out even on pause. Will try to find the same doco on DVD, as will have a sharper pause.
On normal play, as the cam goes past, sort of looks like the ANZ logo??
Anyway, just a few of my thoughts, that will either help or confuse :-)
Richard, you got better quality pic? may be able to do better enhancement then.

PMA have enhanced it with all their resources and the middle is either 3 ICE or 3 XT and the first word on the left going in an arc around the top is possibly 'Best'.

Now we know why Biantes cars are of such a high quality when they go to this much detail and effort. I never would have noticed this logo mising if they released the car without it. Can't wait to see the finished product. How about putting some prototype pictures in the showroom?

Richard,
a couple of suggestions, firstly have you tried the enemy camps like CC and particularly Dinkum, as they have done a few Sierras already.
Secondly, whilst you wouldn't expect Moffat or the other drivers to remember, surely they would have professional static photos of these cars, especially if they ran at Bathurst.

Its only a hunch , but the sticker looks to say something about being " 100 or 200 years ", this appears to be in a map of Australia, does this ring any bell's with anyone. Australia'a Bi-centenary possibly or the writing on the outside of the circle seems to start of with "200 ....
Both DJR & Moffat were strong supporters of anything Australian as is John Faulkner.

Keep Hunting.. someone will claim the trophy with a story to tell their grandkids in years to come..:)

I still think its something to do with an award of some type, the sticker is a replica of a medal or something connected to do with the cars - either manufacturing or racing award.
Can't be anything to do with the 1988 Olympics, Bicentenary or Brisbane Expo '88 as it was on the the Corollas and Sierras 1988 -90.
ADMIN - On the 1990 2hr Bathurst Highlights video it comes up on the ANZ Moffat car when car comes into the pits (about half way, just before the DJR Sierra retired) and the camera pans along the lower side of the car and the logo is right there but its too quick to understand it.
Now if it was DVD it would be much more clearer to see on pause.
The cover of the video of the doco of "Moffat-the man and the mountain" has a clear picture of the side of Moffs 88 Sierra and THAT STICKER can be seen clearly not blurry.
I colour copy the cover and give it to Richard at the Adelaide dinner and with a magnifying glass you could probably read if clearly.

Thanks SWRT but we already have that picture (and the original slide it was taken from) and it isn't clear enough to read. The logo may look ok but the car was in motion when the picture was taken so the logo is very blurry.
The original pic I posted in this thread is from the original slide.

i was looking at the pics on this thread and noticed that the pic posted by richard has the mystery logo close to the names where as the pic posted by frosty has the cams logo inbetween the mystery logo and the names. is this because they are different sides of the car?
also the brock 88 bmw bathurst car has a little yellow sticker on the front quarter. maybe this was a compulsory sticker or something. but ill keep looking.

I have the Roo Decal 1/24th Decal sheet for the 1989 Bathhurst Moffat ANZ Sierra.
Roo decal have did not include the decal you are after on their sheet. However they do recommend "Racing Car News Vols June & November 1989 and Number One, Motorsports magazine Vol 1 No5" as a source of "excellent colour photos of the various Ford Sierras in action.
Maybe Roo Decal have the close ups you need.

I can't help much with this one, but World Expo '88 has been mentioned a few times. I worked at Expo '88 for all 6 months plus 2 of training & I can't recall anything like this logo/sticker around the joint. As I recall, the main Expo logo had a fair bit of green in it. Hope this narrows the field somewhat.
If anyone has a 1988 Bathurst annual book there might be some clear shots of the mysterous logo in it.

Ive checked my 88 racing annual over and over and over but cant find any clear shots.
i decided to ask my girlfriends dad (hes a bit older than me) and he seems to think it was some sort of affiliation with dunlop. or it may have been something to do with a minor sponsor on the dunlop cars. i dont know but its another thing to think about. maybe we're getting closer.
I'm not sure on this but it does look very similiar to Australian compliance stickers that were around in that era.
Could've been for the industry they were in or maybe one of thier sponsers.
Something like ISA900 or ASA9000, the company I worked for at the time went throught it and I have a memory of thinking why would it be on one of the Bathurst cars.
Anyway hope this helps and isn't a totally wacked suggestion.:D

Like I said in my previous post, the Bathurst Highlight 2hr Video of 1990 around lap 90/91 the camera pans along the bottom half of the car past the logo - twice.
If someone had access to good quality TV/video equipment, I'm sure they would be able to read it. Its just too blurry on pause for me to see.

The mystery decal placement was altered on Moffat's 1988 car sometime between Saturday's qualifying run and Sunday's race.
Moff's 1990 #10 car ran a similar decal placement to the 1988 car, but it's 1990 sister #9 car did not feature the frustrating yellow blob.
The sponsor didn't get his money's worth then but might do sometime this century ???

I'm enjoying the challenge as well. I thought someone would have found it by now, but amazingly not !
Has anyone thought about the Bilstein logo (shock absorbers). The Bilstein logo has featured on many cars since the 1970's. Its also a black and yellow logo in the shape of a circle that is sometimes but not always accompanied by an adjoining blue rectangle with the word 'Bilstein'.
Obviously the missing logo is not the standard Bilstein logo, but perhaps 1988 marked some form of company anniversary, or perhaps the logo was changed to celebrate a win at LeMans, a WRC event or somewhere similar. Hope this helps ?
You can see the logo here :-

well after spending most of the weekend looking through a friends massive collection of bathurst books, magazines, Tooheys 1000 programmes and watching quite alot of video footage, even the MOFFAT-The Man & The Mountain,. I have come up with that this logo looks much like the LUK logo that is on the drivers suits etc,, The centre of the logo looks very much like the letters LUK,, which I think is a manufacturer of clutches especially race clutches and lubricants.. So what is everyones thoughts on this..
On another note,,. very sad to hear of the passing of Barry Sheen, a loss of a great ambassador for motor sport..

Possibly because some of us has spent many, many hours looking throught programs, books, magazines videos & the www, with still no answer.
I for one spent about 8 hours looking for this blastid label, but they're was no success.
I suppose you could blame many of us spending our weekend watching the grand prix as well !!!:D
Good luck to whoever finds it, but this little black duck is giving up the search, as I spent so much time at home & on works time searching that I really need to do some of the work I get paid for.

Anyhow I am not giving up,, I don't give up easy on things that annoy me,, plus, there is a great incentive for the lucky one who coms up with the answer, anyhow hopefully we will get a result soon, before all us collectors are put in an asylm..:(

yes I can appreciate what your saying.. it does seem as though it has ground to a halt.. I have been trying all sorts of things to enhance the few pics that abt of this logo,, even took the Moffat tape to a friend who has some pretty high tech macro gear, but with no great results,.. at one point it did look as though the letters in the centre of the logo said ABC which from memory the ABC were doing alot of wraps on Moffat leading up to Tooheys that year.. I sent them of an email,, but like alot of others I have sent,, there has been no replies...
I thought ADMIN might have had an update of some kind for us,, in regards to how their searching is proceeding...
Anyhow I will not give up til the GAME IS OVER :D

i know its not biantes style, but they could just make up a sticker for it as noone seems to be able to find out what it is then they cant prove them wrong. but then someone would pipe up and post a pic of it after the model is made. seems like a bit of a pickle. i think it looks sort of like this :o maybe they could just put that on the car.
..........the search continues (and im not even a ford man)

To be honest a little sticker on a part of the car hardly anyone looks at, is pretty pointless in having, i appreciate Biante's detail and everything, to to sound as bunt as possible, if noone said anything about it i wouldn't know about it and to be honest couldn't really care, onb the other hand, good luck to the person who finds it, it will be well worth it for you.

Unfortunately there are collectors out there who constantly make it known if the tiniest detail isn't correct. So I guess we'll have to keep looking to keep them happy.
I for one put the moffat DVD and Ford Bathurst video through my Computer and enhanced the images from the tape and DVD direct, unfortunately, the camera either panned to quickly or the car was moving faster than the camera was panning and couldn't get a clear enough shot of it. Can't enhance an image that doesn't have the detail to start with.
Someone must have a clear photo somewhere.
Good luck

still hard to read... looks like 100 in the middle with either a funny looking $ sign or an s???
now we can try to work out the words as we can see there are 6 words around the top.

I always thought the "funny looking $ sign" was the much often used boxing kangaroo logo - but what the rest is I have no idea.
Have you tried Phase Three Posters in Sydney? He has the Ian Smith Collection and could well have that photo you are looking for. Can't wait till the model is released!

geez, I dont know if its just me, but I recon that in the middle of the sticker its the distinctive double "O's" of the Hankook tire brand. I found a site and emailed them for any answers but the email bounced. Frpm what I saw in my search Hankook started out in the late 80's. I wonder if its worth chasing up.
chups
15-03-2003, 08:57 AM
yes the OO looks like the hancook OO but i think its more likely to be a 100th anniversary for something. i was looking around and found that the first pneumatic tyre was invented in 1888 by Scottish-born John Boyd Dunlop so 1988 wound of been the 100th anniversary of this. also under the '100' it looks like there is something written in a cursive script font. possibly anniversary but i dont know what relevencs the 's' has to this. i also think that the 's' is a thick s with a black shaddow.
dont give up, we'll get there.
Is it possible that it says BOC in the middle. It looks like it may have the outline of some yachts and the Whitbread BOC round the world yacht race was on that year.
Could BOC have been a sponsor of Moffat back then.
Hey guys,
Not sure if this can help but I have found a web site, & they sell COMPLETE sticker/decal packs for model cars. 1/24 & 1/32 scale.
Here is the web site.
http://www.mondialtec.com/mondiadecal1.htm
Not sure what language it is all in but on the page they have for sale a 'Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 Gp A - ANZ - Allan Moffat' sticker set.
Now they have no pictures on the site but I am sure if you asked you could find out if they have the one you want.

25-03-2003, 03:21 PM
Now we know what it is, it's funny looking back to see what people thought it might be (I didn't have a clue so didn't even try!) - the picture of Mr Dunlop was variously thought to be the letter S or a kangaroo, which might have upset his wife, who probably thought it was a great picture of him. I'd never heard of Stuckey tyres - how well-known are they in Oz?
admin
25-03-2003, 03:30 PM
Stuckey Tyre Service are and always have been the Distributor for Dunlop racing tyres in Australia, so quite a large concern, but usually stick to the worldwide Dunlop format for any advertising.
If chups reminds us when or if he gets the model, or sends a stamped addressed envelope, we will send him the scanned pic that solved it all.
