View Full Version : Should the V8's return to Tassie and ACT?
Should the Konica V8's do a round at Tassies Symmons Plains and the V8's return to Canberra with the Konicas?
If it happen then V8's TRUELY do race in all Aussie States and Territories.
Place your say here.

Only speaking on Canberra, it would be good to see the V8's back BUT not on the "Track" & on the dates they used previously.
The track was a disgrace, any Canberran could've told you that the June long weekend is the WORST time for anything outdoors, & the disruption to Businesses & Govt.Departments in the area had to be experienced to be believed. I know, it's part of my Delivery/Pickup area.
I'd love to see a local race, but on a proper race track, or on any of the many 3-lane arterial roads around that area. I can think of 2 options without trying hard.

i think a round in tassie or the act would be fine aslong as wanneroo wasnt sacraficed for it. its closer for these people to go the one of the victorian rounds than it is for a west australian. but i do disagree with a championship round overseas. maybe a special event once a year for publicity but just dont steal our race.

Yes, I think a round of the series should be held in all states including Tassie and A.C.T. Mr Cochrane needs to support our motorsport in general instead of just filling his own pockets with these big overseas deals. I know he wants to expand our great category to different parts of the world but it is an Australian Championship and should race in all states of Australia before it gets shipped off overseas. I realise that Symmons Plains is not as well equipped as most tracks in Australia, but in effect not having a round here in Tassie has killed our motorsport. There is no funds to spend on track improvements through local motorsport as they don't get the crowds to pay for any. In years to come this is really going to hurt us, all because Mr Cochrane doesn't profit enough from little ol Tassie. We have the best % of people attending for our population but we still don't get a look in. The dates on offer for this years calendar for Tassie were June / July I think which was basically a sure way of making it fail anyway. I couldn't wait for March to come around for our round of the series but now that it's gone there is nothing here. I know Perth seems to suffer a bit from isolation but we seem to miss out on abolutely everything down here, we may as well be a seperate country. I don't know how we could ever get our round back without first getting some support from the category to build up our funds, why should local government fit the bill each time? It only ends up coming out of our pockets to feed the greedy anyway. Well I've said my bit, but I really would love to see them back down our way one day, But I won't hold my breath. :(

A true national championship should have a round in every state.
Whilst I fondly remember past races at places like Tassie's Symmons Plains and Queensland's Lakeside, both of which are fast but narrow tracks, one should keep in mind that the field of competitors at these tracks rarely numbered more than about fifteen in the eighties and early nineties.
These days, it would be difficult to stage a race for thirty-plus V8 Supercars at Symmons without all the cars choking themselves to a panel-bending halt at the first turn hairpin.
As things stand here in the West, I count ourselves lucky to still have a place in the game in view of Mr Cochrane's past criticisms of our little circuit; Wanneroo / Barbagallo may be small, but it does allow traffic to flow well enough to avoid 'bottlenecks'.
I also have nothing against street circuits, but understand that there is a huge cost factor involved and the other downside is that all other forms of circuit motor racing suffer if funds are channelled away from permanent track facilities.
My suggestion is for the Konica series to race at Symmons plains Tassie since the PROCAR series does a round there.
Keep WA on the calender but take away Eastern Creeks 2nd round and take it to a purpose built ACT track-along the Monaro highway is alot of land for a track to be built and for the Shanghai round just add it with the rest of races and you've got a 14 round series.
When the Eastern Creek drag racing comlex is finished a windfeild triple challenge style event could happen with V8's in the day,Drag cars at night.
Also theres rumors that a new WA track is to be built near Perth airport up to FIA standard, hopefully it can take more fans then Waneroo can.

about that track near the airport, everything has gone quiet about that, last i heard was that they are awaiting approval from the aviation authority (as they won the buffer zone where it will be built or something like that. if anyone has any more up-to-date info, id love to hear it.

V8s should go to Wakefield Park, it's only about an hour away from Canberra and is a purpose built racetrack. If it's good enough for Konica cars, it's good enough for the regualr V8s.
Wakefeild park is in NSW and is a great track.
My idea was to keep a V8 rond in the ACT to make the series Truely National(all States and territories).
There is good land for a race track to be devoloped along the Monaro highway in between Canberra and Tugerra and it could be up to FIA standard.
I've heard something about a proposed drag strip for Canberra.
Maybe it could be beside a new race track and a Speedway built as well.
With a new drag strip, that would ease traffic during Summernat time around Exibition park.

I think you've got buckleys of getting a track on the Monaro Highway between Hume & Tuggeranong. You'd have the usual noise screams from Jerrabomberra residents plus Queanbeyan Council is trying to get a new estate going at Tralee, just south of Hume.
My thought was to build a Track around Black Mountain Peninsula on Lake Burley Griffin, following the little access road there that takes you to all the BBQ areas & playgrounds. Do it like Bathurst so's it's public road 51 weeks of the year, & a Race Track the rest.
Then you're right in the heart of Canberra, with all the scenery BUT no disruption to Business areas.
Alternatively, you could do a Street Circuit around the central basin of the lake: along Parkes Way (3 lanes), across Commonwealth Ave Bridge (3 lanes), along King Edward or King George Terrace (2 lanes), back across Kings Ave Bridge (3 lanes) & back onto Parkes Way. Loooong straights. How fast can those V8's go?

That last one sounds real good Steve but realistically it'll never happen. Can you imaging having all those roads blocked off for 4 - 6 weeks? All the do gooders would whinge their brains out saying it was too noisy , disruptive etc etc:rolleyes:. And besides, Tony Cochrane and friends are going to make too much money from Shaghai to even consider bringing the V8 circus back to Canberra.
I reckon they should take the V8s to USA and show the Yanks what real car racing is all about - it's not just about going around in a circle for hours on end!:D

All true, Falchoon, but I can always dream. That's why I lean to the Black Mtn Peninsular idea, it's actually do-able. In reality, with the Bushfire cleanup only just started, ANY luxury like a Race Track is a dream, for now.
Catalionia park in Katomba was a permanent race track and normal roads built in a housing area,Le mans is similar.
If any new Canberra suburb developments happen then the ACT government should build a race circuit as part of it,but in a area without alot of trees near by(area near Hume???).
I've also hear Bakersville was getting upgraded in hope for a PROCAR campionship round.

I for one would like to see a few less races in Sydney and Melbourne and more in a few more peculaliar spots.....like Newcastle, 2 hours out of Sydney. A while back there was a competition in Motor Racing Australia and you had to design a street track in any city of your choice and you won something or other and Tony Cochrane had a look at it. It was a fantastic track (i live in Newcastle and the location would have been perfect) and it's not just because i live in Newcastle, the person who designed it was from Tasmania if my memory serves me correctly. Also, having just been to the Canberra race last year and having the time of my life it is sad to see such a great event axed after that many years. Hey, it might've been cold (11 degree max. on one day) but that was part of the fun. It was something different. I agree that it should be moved because it was so cold but not so the temperature is like any other racetrack. Im sure the teams didnt mind Canberra as a racetrack in regards to merchandising. You wouldn't believe the amount of people wearing $300 team jackets. The amount of money in this sport ceases to amaze me.
